I just upgraded my Norton Antivirus, but I have Spyware-Aprapos.C and can't get rid of it. I tried to follow instructions from Norton, but now my computer is running even slower. I also can't change my desktop, when I try to change my desktop display, it says Run a DLL as an App has encountered a problem and needs to close, then it says Dr Watson Postmorten Debugger has encountered a problem, then it freezes and I have to restart to get the computer to run again.

Please help.

Thanks so much!

Welcome to Tom Coyote sorry for the delay in responding but we get a little overwhelmed with logs most times.

Spyware-Aprapos.C Is a Rootkit type of infection that won't show up on your HJT log, it basically goes undetected, lets run the tool and if its present this will remove it.

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download AproposFix © Swandog46

Save it to your desktop but do NOT run it yet.

Reboot your Computer into Safemode
  • Go to Start> Shut off your Computer> Restart
  • As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly,
this will bring up a menu.
  • Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to Safemode
  • Then press the Enter Key on your Keyboard
Once in Safe Mode
  • Double-click aproposfix.exe and unzip it to the desktop.
  • Open the aproposfix folder on your desktop
  • Click on run RunThis.bat.
  • Follow the prompts.
When the tool is finished, please reboot back into normal mode, and post a new HijackThis log, along with the entire contents of the log.txt file in the aproposfix folder.
I think it worked!?

Open HJT Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows , check this and click on Fix Checked

This is where you most likely got infected from

Run this system cleaner.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
  • This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
Your system may start up slower after running ATF Cleaner, this is expected but will be back to normal after the first or second boot up

Update your Java, some of this garbage sneaks in through these holes.
  • Your Java is out of date and leaving your system vulnerable.
  • Go to your Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel and uninstall any previous versions of Java (J2SE Runtime Environment)
  • It should have an icon next to it:
    [external image: Posted Image]
    Select it and click Remove.
  • Reboot your system.
  • Then go to the Sun Java website and download and install the update.
  • Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 9 <–This is what you need to download and install.
  • Then after install you can verify your installation here Sun Java Verify

Run this free online virus scanner from Panda, it may pick up some bad entires that are not showing up on your HJT log. It's important that I see the log so copy and paste it into your next reply.

Which download should I choose?

Windows Platform - J2SE™ Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9

Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language jre-1_5_0_09-windows-i586-p.exe 15.74 MB
Windows Online Installation (typical download size is ~7.1MB), Multi-language jre-1_5_0_09-windows-i586-p-iftw.exe 245.76 KB
Make sure you choose this one.

If you choose online, it will install automatically , if you choose offline, you wll have to save the file to your computer and then run it. The online is easier. Your call.

Ken :D
I'm confused. I hit the Download next to the option listed above, then I hit I Accept and nothing happens. Should I be doing something else? Should I download the Sun Download Manager? Sorry
No problem, sometimes these things are a little tricky.

Maybe your not doing it in order.

First go to this page.
http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp

Then under J2SE™ Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9 <–Click on Download.

It will take you to the next page
Click on Accept and make sure you select from here

Select this
Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language

A box should pop up asking you where you want to save the file, you can save it to your desktop and then click on it to install it.

Ken :D
Good,

Then run Panda, let me see the report and if all looks well I have some free programs for you to install to help keep some of this bad stuff from installing.

Ken :D
Ugh! I downloaded The Panda ActiveScan, I clicked on the free scan box, then the Panda Active Scan box comes up and I click free scan, It then says Active Scan has started, but then it comes up with in yellow on the top "the website wants to run the following add ons- if you want to continue click the box. I did, but then it pops up another box asking if you want to run the activex controls, i hit run, then it comes up with a box wanting you to purchase panda. Sorry, but I'm lost.
When you get as far as them wanting you to purchase it, say no.

If you still can't continue, try Housecall from Trendmicro,, have it set to autoclean and let me see the report.

Housecall <<
I downloaded and scanned using Housecall. After 5 hours I deleted some spyware, adware and trojan stuff. (I have dial up. ) There's a bunch of vulnerabilities that start w/ MS04-041, etc. I can't copy them. It's been idle for a very long time, I think it's stuck.

Here's another log.

I know on dialup some of these scans take awhile. But we are just trying to determine if your system is clean.

MS04-041 <– These are related to Microsoft updates , not to worry .

You can remove these with HJT

All these poker sites sometimes bring bad stuff with it.

Here are some free programs to install, don't leave home without them
  • Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.
  • Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06
Check for Updates and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.
  • Spyware Blaster It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed.
  • Spyware Guard It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • Win Patrol This program will warn you when any changes are being made to your system and give you the option to deny the change.
  • IE-Spyad
IE-Spyad places over 4000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • Firefox 2.0 It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.
  • Zone Alarm Here is a free Firewall from Zone Labs, I wouldn't access the internet without it.
Thanks for stopping by Tom Coyote , I'm glad I was able to help you. :D
