Running WinXP.
Something wrong as I have just formatted HD, and upon installing a few basic

Welcome to Tom Coyote sorry for the delay in responding but most days we are overwhelmed with people seeking help.

Your HIJACKTHIS program is current, but it is very important that it resides in its own folder.
We will use Hijackthis (HJT) to make changes to your system and HJT will make backups of those changes,
If HJT is not in its own folder, those backups could be lost.

Easy to fix.
  • just go to My Computer > YOUR C:\ DRIVE > Program Files and create a new folder and name it Hijackthis .
  • Now scroll to where you have HJT currently, right click on the HJT icon and select CUT .
  • Now open the new folder you just created and right click within that folder and select PASTE .
  • Now HJT should reside in C:\Program Files\Hijackthis\Hijackthis.exe

Open HJT Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows, check this entry and click on Fix Checked

You have a clean log, no malware or a virus that I can see  . I also don't see any Anti Virus software or any windows Service packs installed, going without these is going to get you infected real quick.

Free AV Software here.
AntVir Personal Edition

You can go here to download the latest service packs free of charge from Microsoft, on dial up it can take awhile, you can also order the CD free from Microsoft.

16Nov2006 Thank you ken545 for your review of my log file. In re: MicroSoft Service packs 1 and 2 recommended. Have in the past tried both MS Service packs 1 and 2, and upon installing either, my system completely goes haywire (slow downs, freezes, incompatibility w/regular programs), a total mess. I*ve run my system with and without (MS Service Packs), and still can*t understand how people can get their computer systems to operate with these service packs installed? Most people that I*ve talked to (including forum chats) about these service packs, including my brother, 3 sons and their friends, have also tried to have a smooth working system with MS Service packs installed, and to date, I*ve yet to hear of *anyone* that does not have problems following installation. Why is this so common? Are you saying that your system runs smooth following the service packs installed, because if you are, you will be the first I*ve heard of. I could understand it if I ran a bunch of free, known junk or untested software, but my system is stripped down to just basic MS Works, Photoshop Elements and a few other very common and tested software programs (as the log attached will verify), and upon MS Service Packs install, everything goes bad, and yes I*ve formatted (several times) in attempts to start with a clean Hard Drive and WinXP OS and still, upon installing MS S.Packs, numerous problems arise rendering my Compaq 8000z system practically useless, no joke. Hey, if you know something to assist with these service pack problems, *Please*, any insight, direction or suggestions would be gratefully appreciated. Thank you.
dhjr :D The people who you are talking to are off track. They did not install them correctly. I am a systems admin at a company with around 90 computers , we started off with a preloaded system, then installed SP1 when it came out and then SP2 and beyond when it came out. I work on PCs on the side, between work, home, friends, family and some customers, I have personally installed SP2 on over a 100 computers with no problems. If the PC you are going to install it on has problems, SP2 could make it worse, but if you have a clean problem free computer you will have no problems. The problems you can have without the service packs like viruses and rootkit infections, malware and spyware greatly out number the problems you will have with it installed. You need to get your ducks in a row. 1. You need a clean machine, no malware or viruses <– you have this. 2. Defragment your hard drive to get it nice and tidy to accept the installation. 3. Disable any Anti Virus programs you have that could interfere with the installation. 4. Turn off your screensavers and any auto loading programs so they won't pop on during the install. 5. Disable any Anti Spyware programs like Spybot etc. Then go for it. Ken :D
