Most times it shows its path as C:\My Documents\GPS\Details|Setup.exe or C:\Documents and Settings\All users\DocumentsSetup.exe couple of times C:System Volume Information\-restore{21E40951-1B12-4452-ACBD-1211DB6BBCD5}\RP356\A0041164.exe and 5 times in C:\RECYCLER\NPROTECT\00305345.exe the other 4 times had different nos. Usually the 1st 2 come together, but not always. I don't seem to be doing anything when they arrive, but am usually at the computer to heal them. The GPS word document that was on the computer was deleted incase that was the problem, but hasn't made any difference. Rosalind
click Start> Run> type in CMD tap enter key
Type this in exactly as it is. There's a space after del.
del \\?\c:\recycler\nprotect\*.*
Tap enter key.
Type in exit.

Next:
Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn it back on.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Remove the Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

This should remove the items from Norton's \RECYCLER\NPROTECT and the ones in System Volume Information\-restore

Let me know how it goes.
The resonse I got from the first instruction was \\?\c:\recycler\nprotect\NPROTECT.LOG The process cannot access the file because it is being use by anther process. I didn't switch off system restore.
Try right clicking on the Recycle Bin and see if you have the option to empty Norton's RECYCLER If that doesn't work the use Alt/Ctrl/Del (all 3 at same time) and end the task for NPROTECT.EXE. Now try it: click Start> Run> type in CMD tap enter key Type this in exactly as it is. There's a space after del. del \\?\c:\recycler\nprotect\*.* Tap enter key. Type in exit. Also do the system restore part.
On right clicking Empty Norton Recyle bin, it is greyed out, so no option there. Did the Ctrl/Alt/Del but it wouldn't let me end the NPROTECT.EXE, tried several times but it is still there. Tried the 2nd part again as well and still nothing.
Double Click the Icon "My Computer"> double click C: Hard Drive
Double Click c:\recycler
Double Click c:\recycler\nprotect
I would this it would be listed there.
Followed the above and got into C, then had a folder in pale yellow with recycler and two folders inside with strange numbers and one was empty and the other had some pictures in. Total size 18.2 mb Also the System Volume Information folder was pale yellow and empty I also typed in c:\recycler\nprotect\ into run and it came up with some notepad and Word documents and some other symbols which I don't recognise but have the suffix .ini I'm sorry I don't think I have explained this very well.
Open Notepad (Start>All Programs>Accessories), and copy/paste all the BOLD REGEDIT below to it. Don't forget to include REGEDIT4.
Save in: Desktop
File Name: fixme.reg
Save as Type: All files
Click: Save

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run\DSS]

On the desktop, doubleclick fix.reg and allow it to run. Let it merge.

Reboot and let me know how the PC is running.
Ran the instruction as requested. Once the computer is up and running it is generally OK, but it is getting very slow to restart, will sit with the wall paper for 2-3 minutes before the icons appear. While trying to work with the Recyler bin it froze twice and had to be restarted.
No, we used to have Norton as the antivirus protection. After we moved house we had no ISP for 8 months and the Norton expired. So we downloaded AVG on to a memory key and loaded it onto this computer and removed the Norton anti virus. Then went online and updated the AVG. This was 3 months ago.
In order to completely uninstall Symantec AntiVirus and all related components you need to follow these instructions.
Note: This procedure will remove all Symantec products, not just Symantec AntiVirus.

1.Click on Start | Settings | Control Panel
2.In the control panel double-click on Add / Remove Programs
3.Look through the list of installed programs for any item that says either "Norton" or "Symantec" or "LiveUpdate". (for example "Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition" or "Norton AntiVirus 2000")
4.For each "Norton", "Symantec", or "LiveUpdate" item, select the item and click Add / Remove. Follow the instructions, and click Yes or Yes to all when prompted.
When you are done there should be no items in the list that say "Norton", "Symantec", or "LiveUpdate".
5.Click OK to close the Add / Remove Programs window.
6.Reboot your computer if it hasn't already automatically rebooted.
7.Delete the c:\Program Files\Symantec AntiVirus (or c:\Program Files\Norton) folder.
8.Delete the c:\Program Files\Symantec folder.
9.Delete the c:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared folder.
10. C:\Program Files\Norton Utilities

If uninstalling Symantec AntiVirus using Add / Remove Programs does not work, you can use the directions on this Symantec website to manually remove all elements of Symantec Antivirus from your computer.

Post a new HJT log
OK four lots of Norton/Symantec programs removed with add/remove programs, seemed to go OK.

Computer rebooted much quicker, icons appearing with the wallpaper and not several minutes after.

Only found two folders relating to Norton, one in ProgramFiles and one in common files, both deleted.

Threat detected while on the first removal off a Norton program.
