Hi ehrlich3

Please print, or copy and paste this text into a Notepad file and place it on your desktop, to review as you work. Please proceed with this fix in the order provided below.

You are running HijackThis from its zipped archive; please create a new folder for it and unzip the program into it. It is very important you do this before anything else!

Close all windows and browsers, leaving only HijackThis running.

Place a check beside each of these entries listed below, if still present.

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://go.microsoft....k/?LinkId=69157
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://go.microsoft....k/?LinkId=54896
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://go.microsoft....k/?LinkId=54896
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://go.microsoft....k/?LinkId=69157
O16 - DPF: {216FEA47-4290-49BE-8783-5A7D9C58B532} - http://www.blocks.co...all/install.cab

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Next:
Go to start > run and type: cleanmgr and click ok.
Let it scan your system for files to remove.
Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
Press OK to remove them.

  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-1_5_0_09-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.

Hi ehrlich3

Not being able to update at MS must be a very recent problem, since you have the IE7 browser installed. I do not see anything in your Hijack This log that would prevent downloading from MS. The only MS update I require presently for my PC is the IE7 browser, no other updates are available, when I check the update site.

It might be advisable to contact Microsoft regarding that problem, since you do seem to have all the necessary requirements to download updates and obviously have downloaded recent updates.

I see you have AVG Anti-Virus and also at the least, an updater for Symantec Anti-Virus. Having two onboard Anti-Virus Programs running at the same time can produce conflicts between the two and result in less protection rather than more. If you no longer use Symantec it would be advisable to Uninstall all Symantec Programs from Add/Remove programs.

Your Hijack This logfile looks to be clean.
If there are no problems, please be sure to use the link to see TonyKlein's good advice (below). Those Protection programs offered free, are some of the best available and are recommended for every PC connected to the Internet. Prevention is much better than the alternative.

One of the best features of Windows XP is the System Restore option, however if Malware infects a computer with this operating system the Malware can be backed up in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is necessary after a virus removal.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(winXP)

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

* Clean your Cache and Cookies in IE:
Close all instances of Outlook Express and Internet Explorer
Go to Control Panel > Internet Options > General tab
Click the "Delete Cookies" button
Next to it, Click the "Delete Files" button
When prompted, place a check in: "Delete all offline content", click OK

* Clean your Cache and Cookies in Firefox (In case you also have Firefox installed):
Go to Tools > Options.
Click Privacy in the menu on the left side of the Options window.
Click the Clear button located to the right of each option (History, Cookies, Cache).
Click OK to close the Options window
Alternatively, you can clear all information stored while browsing by clicking Clear All.
A confirmation dialog box will be shown before clearing the information.

* Clean other Temporary files + Recycle bin

Go to start > run and type: cleanmgr and click ok.
Let it scan your system for files to remove.
Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
Press OK to remove them.

Also, see TonyKlein's good advice and highly recommended FREE PROTECTION PROGRAMS. A must for all PC users.

So how did I get infected in the first place?

Safe surfing. :wavey:
