Hello Brad :D

Welcome to the forum, sorry for the delay.

C:\Program Files\LimeWire this program brings a bunch of garbage with it, you need to remove it via the Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel.

The msgplus.exe process is an add-on for Microsoft Messenger. It will add extra functionality to the standard Messenger chat client. However, during the installation process you may have inadvertently installed a copy of the 'Lop' adware program.

When you installed C:\Program Files\Messenger Plus! if you did not read what you where installing, you installed the LOP adware program with it. This is another program to remove. If you want it, remove it, reinstall it and read what your installing and just install the bare minimum.

Please download ComboFix by sUBs from either of these two locations

  • Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply along with a new HJT log please.
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

Let me see the Combofix log and a new HJT log please.
No problem Ken,

Thanks for your help. The CmdService pre-dates limewire, so I'd like to hang on to limewire for now. I have removed Messenger Plus!

Brad,

Have to aplogize, I am at work with some connectivity issues so I will be back to you later on today.

Your call on Limewire, just keep in mind that you take the risk of infections by using all those file sharing programs like Kazaa, BearShare and the like.

Open Up HJT > Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows, check these and click on Fix Checked.

Enable windows to show all files and folders
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial62.html

Then delete this file

C:\WINDOWS\system32\smss.dll

Run this tool, its important that it is run in Safemode and can take the better part of an hour, but it will remove a ton of bad entries from your system. It was just bought out by AVG but its the same tool

http://wiki.castlecops.com/Malware_Removal…emoval_Programs

Let me see the report from AVG and a new HJT log please
Hi Ken, I did the fixes in HJT but couldn't find C:\WINDOWS\system32\smss.dll to delete it - I had show all files and folders on. Ran out of time to run AVG (is it the same as ewido - which I already have?) but will get on to it tonight. Will also check the info on Limewire. Thanks, Brad
Brad,

AVG bought Ewido a few months ago and AVG is a newer version. If the Ewido you have is just a trial, you can uninstall it and download the latest version of AVG, here are the setup instructions.

Download and install the 30 day trial of AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 to your desktop.
  • Once you have downloaded AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
  • Once the setup is complete you will need run Ewido and update the definition files.
  • On the main screen select the icon Update then select the Update now link.
  • Next select the Start Update button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the Scanner icon at the top of the screen, then select the Settings tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on Recommended actions and then select Quarantine <– Dont forget this
  • Under Reports
  • Select Automatically generate report after every scan
  • Un-Select Only if threats were found
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 <– Do not run the scan yet.
Boot your computer into Safemode
  • Go to Start> Shut Off your Computer> Restart
  • As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly.
  • This will bring up a menu.
  • Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to SAFEMODE
  • Then press the Enter on your Keyboard
Tutorial if you need it How to boot into Safemode

IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while ewido is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning process:
  • Launch AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
  • Select the Scanner icon at the top and then the Scan tab then click on Complete System Scan.
  • Ewido will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
  • Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select Apply all actions
  • Next select the Reports icon at the top.
  • Select the Save report as button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system
  • make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5

I need to see AVG log along with a New HJT log please.
Hi Ken,

AVG didn't produce a log, even though I selected automatically generate a report after every scan and un-selected only if threats were found :(

First, update your Java, it may be letting some of this stuff in.

Your Java is out of date and leaving your system vunerable. Update your Java:
  • Go to Start > Control Panel > Add-Remove Programs.
  • Search in the list for all previous installed versions of Java. (J2SE Runtime Environment)

It should have an icon next to it [external image: Posted Image]
  • Select it and click Remove.
The current version can be downloaded from Sun Microsystems
  • Scroll down the page to 'Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 9
  • Click the Download' button.
  • On the new web page, click the Accept License Agreement' button.
  • Then select 'Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language' in the Windows Platform
area just below the Accept button.

AVG will produce a log if you did it correctly, open AVG and go to Reports. open up the last report and paste into this thread.

Download Pocket Killbox to your desktop, unzip it to a folder that you can find

C:\WINDOWS\system32\smss.dll

Highlight the file with the complete path inside the quote and press Ctrl C on your keyboard.
  • Open Pocket Killbox
  • Go to File > Paste from clipboard
  • Set it to Delete on Reboot
  • Tick the box that says End Explorer shell while killing file
  • If its not greyed out..Click the radio button that say Unregister .dll before deleting.
  • Make sure Single File is selected
  • Click on the Red circle with the white X
  • It will ask you to confirm the deletion…Say yes
  • It will ask you to reboot, say yes
Go to this folder and right click on it and tell me what it is.

C:\Program Files\Common Files\iqrq

Download SDFix and save it to your desktop.

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
  • In Safe Mode, right click the SDFix.zip folder and choose Extract All,
  • Open the extracted folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the script.
  • It will remove the Trojan Services then make some repairs to the registry and prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • Your system will take longer that normal to restart as the fixtool will be running and removing files.
  • When the desktop loads the Fixtool will complete the removal and display Finished, then press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Finally open the SDFix folder on your desktop and copy and paste the contents of the results file Report.txt back onto the forum with a new HijackThis log
Hi Ken,

Updated Java to Update 9

Tried to run Killbox on the smss.dll but I just got:

PendingFileRenameOperations Registry Data has been removed by External Process!

Figured out why I didn't get an AVG log previously - forgot to select save report at the end - D''oh! Here is a report I ran today (I ran out of time and had to cancel it about 3/4 through):

Have we got anywhere yet?

Regards, Brad
Brad, :D

Do you have a Linksys Router? This may be related to it. I would not remove it at this time unless we have to later on.
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = 192.168.1.1:3128

I can't find any info on this at all :(
C:\Program Files\Common Files\iqrq
What you might try doing is to delete the whole folder but keep it in your recycle bin for a week or so, make sure everything is working and if you have a problem you can go into the recycle bin and restore it.

Your log looks fine  Are you still having any issues?

Brad, I will be back online later this evening and then will be gone until Monday, so if I don't get right back to you , don't worry, I haven't forgotten about you.

Ken :D
Hi Ken, I have a NetComm ADSL Modem/Router. Don't know about a Linksys Router? OK, I'll move iqrq aside and see what happens. My only issue was Spybot - Search & Destroy detecting Command Service but not being able to get rid of it, and it's still there. Have a good weekend! Brad
Hello Brad, :D

Been away for a long needed weekend.

Do this, cmdservice may still be on your system but not active , if it was active it would be showing up on your HJT log. You had so many infections that its possible that part of this may still be present.

Open a command prompt
  • Start > Run
  • Type cmd
  • Press Enter
  • Type sc delete cmdservice
  • Press enter
  • Type exit and press enter to exit the command prompt

Reboot and run Spybot again and see if its gone.
Glad you had a good weekend Ken. I Ran sc delete cmdservice but got: [SC] OpenService FAILED 1060: The specified service does not exist as an installed service. When I run Spybot I get 3 entries for Command Service: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Services\cmdService HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\cmdService HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\cmdService Spybot deletes HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Services\cmdService but can't delete the other two. Brad
OK, this is a tough one to remove. The people that write this garbage are real nice aren't they??

Here is a new tool for it, lets see if it works. If not I will have to do more research on this.

Please download and unzip Ren-Cmdservice to your desktop.
It will only work correctly if the folder is placed on your desktop and extracted.
  • Open the ren-cmdservice folder by doubleclicking it.
  • Then doubleclick the ren-cmdservice.bat file to run the program.
  • A text file will open when it is finished, Post it please.
  • Then restart the PC run SpyBot check for and fix any problems found.
Post the log and let me know if its gone.
