Dear Forums,

If I attempt to run Norton or Adaware, my system goes blue screen and crashes.

Any software program I open tends to run for only a few minutes and then crashes.

My HJT log is below.

Thanks very much.

Darren

Hello Darren, :D

Welcome to the forum, sorry for the delay but we get a little overwhelmed with logs. Don't know if your problem is a virus, hardware or software, but I would be glad to look at your log for you.

You are using a old version of HJT and it's not showing me the whole picture.

Go to where you have HJT currently and delete it. Use the links in my signature to download and install version 1.99.1. Download it to your desktop, click on the setup icon and follow the defaults, It will by default install in C:\Program Files\Hijackthis.….and this is exactly where we want it to be.

Then open HJT > Scan and Save a log file, the log will open in Notepad, go to Edit> Select All……Edit> Copy and paste the new log into this thread by using the Add-Reply button and not start a new Topic Button.
Hey Ken,

Your reply and personal time is very appreciated. Below is the new log:

Hello Darren :D

You have a Rootkit type of infection called Haxdoor, sometimes this is difficult to remove.

You also have two Anti Virus Programs running and this is not a good thing, they will cause you untold problems. You have Symantec and AVG Free, its totally your call but you need to remove one via the Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel.

I am sure that with Haxdoor and the 2 AV programs running at the sametime that this is the root of your problems.

Download haxfix.exe
and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on haxfix.exe to install haxfix. (standard installation path is c:\program Files\haxfix)
  • Checkmark "Create a desktop icon"
  • Click "Next"
  • When the installation is completed, make sure that the checkmark "Launch HaxFix" is placed
  • Click "Finish"
A red "dos window" (dos box) will open with options:
1. Make logfile
2. Run auto fix
3. Run manual fix
E. Exit Haxfix
  • Select option 1. Make logfile by typing 1 and then pressing Enter
  • Haxfix will start scanning the computer. When it is finished a logfile will open: haxlog.txt
  • Copy the contents of that logfile and paste it into this thread. (c:\haxfix.txt)
Here you go! HAXFIX logfile - by Marckie version 4.29 Mon 11/13/2006 18:33:17.98 — Checking for Haxdoor — checking for a3d files a3d files not found checking for matching notify keys no matching notify keys found checking for matching services no matching services found checking for matching safeboot services no matching safeboot services found checking for other Haxdoor-files no other Haxdoor-files found — Checking for Goldun — checking for SSODL keys no ssodl keys found checking for notify keys pasksa xartcd5 checking for services p79bsksb xartcd7 checking for other Goldun-files no other Goldun-files found Finished!
That Pasksa file is the Haxdoor infection
  • Open this folder program files > haxfix and double click on fix.bat (or double click on fix.bat desktop icon)
  • Close all other open windows since this step requires a reboot
  • Select option 2. Run auto fix by typing 2 and then pressing Enter
If an infection is found, you'll get a message to close all other open windows.
  • Close all open windows except the red dos window from haxfix and then press Enter
  • The computer will reboot
  • After reboot a logfile will open > (c:\haxfix.txt)
  • Post the contents of that logfile along with a new HijackThis log.

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\pasksa.dll <– Let me know if this is still present???

Reboot normally and run this system cleaner.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
  • This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
Your system may start up slower after running ATF Cleaner, this is expected but will be back to normal after the first or second boot up

What can you tell me about this, is this a program that you know about and use?
c:\documents and settings\darren\my documents\visual studio projects\mywindowsservice

You still have two Anti Virus programs running, you need to remove one.

Post the log from AVG and a New HJT log
Hey Ken,

C:\Windows\System32\ms.exe was not found.

C:\Windows\System32\ms.exe was found.

c:\documents and settings\darren\my documents\visual studio projects\mywindowsservice was just a small pet project I was working on in VisualStudio 2003.

I tried to remove Norton, but it keeps giving me an error and aborting the uninstall.

Darren
Hello :D

C:\Windows\System32\ms.exe was not found.
C:\Windows\System32\ms.exe was found.

Which one was found and which one was not found ?? Its important because we need to remove those files if present

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\pasksa.dll <– Let me know if this is still present???

Your log looks good, but lets clean you up a bit. You had some bad entries in the Java cache.
  • Click Start/settings/control panel
  • Right click the Java icon in control panel ( Looks like a little coffee cup )
  • Choose open
  • Then look for a tab that says cache and choose clear cache.
  • Do that for every Java icon, if there is more than one.

( Newer version might have delete Temporary Internet files, delete them)

Your Java is out of date and leaving your system vunerable. Update your Java:
  • Go to Start > Control Panel > Add-Remove Programs.
  • Search in the list for all previous installed versions of Java. (J2SE Runtime Environment)

It should have an icon next to it:

    [external image: Posted Image]
    Select it and click Remove.
  • The current version can be downloaded from Sun here:
    http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
Scroll down the page to 'Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 9 and press the Download' button. On the new web page, click the Accept License Agreement' button.
Then select 'Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language' in the Windows Platform
area just below the Accept button.

How are things running now??
Hey Ken, My apologies, ms.exe was not found, pasksa.dll was found. Should I delete pasksa.dll? Things seem to be more secure, although after seeing all the scumware that AVG-AntiSpyware found, I am extremely paranoid at this point. I went out today and picked up a router with firewall. I really appreciate all the time you've put into helping me. Thanks very much. Darren
Darren :D

My apologies, <– not needed :D This stuff gets real confusing if your not used to it, some people count sheep when they hit the sack, I count dll files :)

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\pasksa.dll <– This has to go, you will have to be in Safemode in order to delete it, if it won't let you, do this.

Open HJT> Misc Tools> Delete a file on Reboot and scroll to C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\pasksa.dll , then click ok, reboot your system and check to see if its gone. This one is leftover from Haxdoor and even the fix did not remove it, lets hope its gone.

Let me know how you did
Darren :D

Glad all is well
