My PC has been developing intermittent slow internet connections over the past week or two. Sometimes I can get mail or a website quickly [have ADSL], while other times - often later in the day - the mail or browser crawl or stop. Have done VirusScan, Windows Defender, AdAware and Spybot scans [nothing found]. Would much appreciate your input, please.

Hi mackeff

Welcome to the TomCoyote Forums
My name is mschroe919 and I am going to read your log.
I would like to help you So if you would….
Please be patient and I will be back as soon as possible.

while waiting for my return, please do this:

Run a Panda online ActiveScan from here:
http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan.htm

On the top right go to: Free Use ActiveScan
Follow the prompts, provide the required info, select: Scan Now!
Allow the ActiveX download.

Select a device to scan: Local Disks

Next, select: See Report
Then select, Save Report and save to a location where you can find the report

Allow them to remove anything they find.
If anything should be found that it couldn’t clean, please WRITE DOWN the FULL PATHS AND FILENAMES. and include on next post with new log.

NEXT:
Reboot and post a new HijackThis.exe and the Panda report.
Good luck mschroe919

good luck mschroe919
Hi mschroe919,

First, thanks for the help!

This is an annoyance, rather than a major problem, but I thought I'd better look after it in case it was going to get worse.

I followed your instructions: the panda scan turned up only 6 cookies [which I deleted after I saw the panda report; BTW - at the end of the scan there seemed to be no way for the program to 'disinfect' those 6 - there was just an ad for the paid version.] The full report is below, as is the HJT scan done after [which is almost the same as the one from yesterday].

Have also checked with my ISP - they've checked my line and nothing's wrong there.

One other thing I thought of today and am looking into - the control panel/power options setting/system standby – since we've had the PC, that's been set to 'never' and this week in the interests of saving power, I set it to 15 minutes. Perhaps there's a connection there??? Anyway, I'm experimenting by alternating the two settings for periods of time. But that will take a couple days to sort out.

Hi mackeff,

As you said:

Here's the latest HJT log after I followed your instructions. Not too much has changed in the log.

There wasn't much in the log seen to be changed.

Here is a couple of thing which might speed up things:

FIRST:
Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.

Download Here:
http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1

This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

NEXT:

Please download System Security Suite. here.

http://www.forums.security-central.us/showthread.php?t=318

Extract it from the zip file into a folder.

Run 3S under “Items To Clear” tab place a checkmark in all of them but the last.

Reboot, no need for new log, just:

Please describe how your computer is behaving now.

Good luck mschroe919
