"Two resurgent email-borne exploits have been hitting users particularly hard over the last week, and researchers say the uptick could get worse. Stration.DS, a variant of a mass-mailing virus that was first spotted last month, is reproducing at alarming rates, according to researchers. Security vendor Fortinet says it has killed more than 350,000 instances today alone – more than three times as many as it stopped on Friday; email security vendor Postini confirmed that estimate, saying it has slapped the virus down more than 363,000 times in the last 24 hours. Separately, Panda Software says it has spotted several variants of the Haxdoor Trojan – a rootkit exploit that often uses email to steal confidential user information – over the last seven days. Like Stration, Haxdoor is not new, but appears to be re-emerging in a particularly virulent strain…. "It will probably continue to proliferate at its current rate -until- more people update their antivirus software and it has a smaller base of machines to launch from," Lu says. "When most people have their antivirus products upgraded, we'll start to see the numbers go down"… Stration and Haxdoor join Netsky and Mytob as threats that have been attacking email users in wide variants for months at a time. In its monthly threat report issued Friday, Postini* said it blocked more than 4 million instances of Netsky alone in September…"

'Pump-and-Dump' Spam Surge Linked to Russian Bot Herders

"The recent surge in e-mail spam hawking penny stocks and ###### enlargement pills is the handiwork of Russian hackers running a botnet powered by tens of thousands of hijacked computers. Internet security researchers and law enforcement authorities have traced the operation to a well-organized hacking gang controlling a 70,000-strong peer-to-peer botnet seeded with the SpamThru Trojan… One chart commandeered by (Joe Stewart, senior security researcher at SecureWorks) showed that Windows XP SP2 (Service Pack 2) machines dominate the makeup of the botnet, a clear sign that the latest version of Microsoft's operating system is falling prey to attacks. "They're breaking into sites that are somewhat related to the stock market and stealing e-mail address from those databases. The thinking is, if they get an e-mail address for someone reading stock market and investment news, that's a perfect target for these penny stock scams," Stewart said… All SpamThru bots—the botnet controls about 73,000 infected clients—are also capable of using a list of proxy servers maintained by the controller to evade blacklisting of the bot IP addresses by anti-spam services. Stewart said this allows the Trojan to act as a "massive distributed engine for sending spam," without the cost of maintaining static servers… According to data from Barracuda Networks, an enterprise security appliance vendor in Mountain View, Calif., there has been a 67 percent increase in overall spam volume and a 500 percent increase in image spam since Aug. 2006…"

"…Mass e-mailers traditionally bump up their activity as the year winds down. But this year, the amount of junk messages could be unprecedented, companies that make spam-busting tools say. And senders of unsolicited ads are already celebrating the close of the harvest season and the approach of Christmas… In October, 63 billion junk messages were sent daily, on average, compared with 31 billion a year ago, according to data from IronPort* Systems. Another antispam specialist, MessageLabs**, reports that 88.7 percent of all e-mail sent in October was unsolicited. That percentage is expected to rise to nearly 90 percent in November and December. That could add up to a huge pile of unwanted e-mail. IronPort predicts that the number of spam messages will average 78 billion a day in December, up from 38 billion last year… A lot of the messages are being delivered using the new Trojan horse, called "SpamThru"…"
