I get this error after trying to start Notepad: The C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\csrss.exe application cannot run in Win32 mode.
I can, however, open "existing" Notepad documents. No other significant system problems at this time. Thanks.

Hello and Welcome to the forum.

I suggest you do this:

You need To disable TeaTimer, it can stop our fix.

1) Run Spybot-S&D
2) Go to the Mode menu, and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected
3) On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
4) Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts

The best way is to do both, Right click the system tray icon and shut down. This will reset TT's registry snapshot. Then, open spybot in advanced mode and turn it off. When cleaning is done, open Spybot in advanced mode to turn back on.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Thanks for the welcome, LDTate. Wow!–looks like I've got some work cut out for me. I never would've thought it's going to take much effort, seeing as how my only real "symptom" is that Notepad won't open/start a new doc. When you say describe how my pc "behaves at the moment"–do you mean "now", or after I've completed your instructions? Many thanks.

Sorry, but I'm a bit confused here. Do I make the Windows file and folder modifications "before" or "after" I run Spybot? The rest of your instructions are clear to me. Thanks.
I disabled TeaTimer, and ran Spybot. It found 49 problems, but I didn't have it "delete" anything as per your instructions. Should I post the Spybot log here?–or, should I run it again and delete/fix anything it finds?
Then I ran HJT, and "Fix checked" the 11 items listed in your original post.
Then I ran Hoster, and clicked "Restore Original Hosts".
Then I ran ATF-Cleaner, selected All, and clicked the "Empty Selected" button.
Then I re-started, and ran HJT again. Here is the log:

System seems to be running fine. Notepad, however, still fails to open/start a new doc. I'm using IE6, but I see that HJT is not able to discern it. I wonder if this is somehow related to my Notepad failure?
Thanks, LDTate.
Ok, I ran Spybot again and fixed the probs it found. I downloaded the Notepad.exe and it works fine, but I still have a corrupt Notepad.exe on my system; or, some other problem that is preventing my "original" Notepad app from functioning. Should I just locate the "original" Notepad app and delete it?…and then drop the new one in its place? Also, did my last HJT log look clean?

You need to check and see if you have 2 notepad.exe files.
What I got from KellysKorner was a .zip that contained Notepad.exe. There was no particular "fix" or "install" of Notepad.exe, so I simply dragged the Notepad.exe to my desktop–where it works fine. When you say–"need to see if you have 2 Notepad.exe files"–do you mean do I have 2 in Program Files/Windows–or wherever it would normally be located? Also, how did my last HJT log look? brb :D

Ok I'm confused
Are you saying you took the notepad file from the windows directory and put it on the desktop?
Sorry for the confusion. No, I placed the Notepad.exe file that I downloaded from KellysKorner onto my desktop. I've done nothing to the Notepad.exe file that has always been on my system–the one that doesn't work–i.e. won't open/start a new doc, but it will allow me to open existing notepad docs.
