Hi there and thank you, so much, for being here in my hour of need!

I'm really hoping that one of the smartie pants on here can help me out with this problem before I pull out my last remaining three strands of hair. … I do not confess to having half a clue about what I'm trying to do, but hope that I'm bright enough to follow your instructions!

Ok… Current situation is that I have a grey desktop which refuses to allow me to do anything to change it.
Had a lovely red background yesterday with a flashing spyware (our something) warning in the centre of it (that was scary), but seem to have managed to get rid of that.

Despite running Norton Internet Security 2005 (on XP) have had a whole host of problems over the last week or so. Downloaded Spyware Detector & Registry Cleaner a few days ago, and several scans, quarantines, deletes later, I just seem to have the one, single BIG problem remaining! Strangely, all three programs are saying that I do not have any problems, however I have to beg to differ!

Not now experiencing any other obvious problems in addition to the grey screen-thing going on.

Have pasted logfile as instructed and hope that these hieroglyphics mean something to someone!…

Thank you for taking the time to try and help.
I very much appreciate it and look forward to your reply. x
Hi Last Chance. I need to take some time to look over your Hijack This log to come up with a fix. Please remember that I am an undergraduate which means I need to have my posts to you checked by a teacher or moderator to make sure I'm giving you the proper instructions. This process won't take long and I thank you for your patience. I'll be back with you soon.
Hi Tracy. You are running an outdated version of Hijack This. Please delete the version you currently have and setup the new version following the instructions below:

Click here to download HJTsetup.exe. Save it to your Desktop!
  • Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
  • Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the "Select Addition Tasks" dialogue.
  • Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
  • Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
  • At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
  • Click on the "Do a system scan and save a log file" button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
  • Copy and paste the log here
DO NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.
Hi again.
Oh yes, I see what you mean! Got it from link on this site, but must be an old one!

Could not find outdated version of Hijack This to uninstall though.

Also, noticed that there is something else happening too but don't know if it is related to the grey screen problem, so mentioning it just in case.
This box is coming up on desktop, at Start up. Something is obviously trying to install and it's telling me that "This MSI must be launched through Set up.

Have installed new version of HJT anyway and this is the log…

Hi Last Chance. You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix and in the last part you will be in safe mode with no internet access, but note that you will need to remain connected to the internet for the first part of this fix. Also I would like you to disable any real time protection that Spyware Detector might have as it might interfere with our fix. Please open that program and look for any settings in the program that disables real time protection before continuing. Follow the steps below after disabling Spyware Detector.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://forums.subratam.org/index.php?act=A…st&id=43811
http://swandog46.geekstogo.com/Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, then make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish. The fix will begin; follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

When your system reboots, follow the prompts. Afterwards, HijackThis will launch. Please click Scan, and check the following items:

Hi Skywalker45. Thank you for all your hard work in helping to sort my problem out. I have printed off your last posting and disabled Spyware detector. Unfortunately I have tried both of the links for Fixwareout but have been unable to find on either. Otherwise, I'm raring to go! Please could you advise of another safe site to download this from? Many thanks Tracy x Scrap that!!!… Just found it at…http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe Back soon!
OK. Are you sitting comfortably?! :D

Should mention that HJT did not launch automatically after reboot and Fixwareout Report, so I opened it, ran scan and followed rest of instructions.

Should also mention that Spyware Detector ran a scheduled scan and quarantined 1 item just before I ran the fresh HJT log (whilst I wasn't looking!) So if it looks like something has disappeared unexplicably, that's where it may be.

I shall go away and prepare myself to have to do this over again with fewer ifs and buts…
I think I could do it much faster second time around!

Thank you for your patience Skywalker 45.
x
Hi Last Chance. Good Job! We're getting closer to getting you clean. We need to repeat a little of the last step, but all in all we're making progress. I need you to make sure to disable Spyware Detector's real time protection again before you continue.

During the AVG scan it was scanning within a zipped folder. That means somewhere in that archive was something malicious or questionable so you were right to quarantine the entire zipped/archived file.

I would like you to visit Virustotal here. Please upload the following files for analysis and post back the results in your next reply (just copy and paste the lines below in Virustotal's scanner):

C:\WINDOWS\system32\{E737315C-32BF-4D10-8378-B2E74D3F629F}.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\CSQZX.EXE

Next run Hijack This again and put a check (tick) next to the following:

O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{A353DD56-E18C-4237-9F25-4A95ADE8C5C6}: NameServer = 85.255.116.132,85.255.112.221

Close all other browsers/windows and click Fix Checked. Close Hijack This.

Next:

Please go to Start -> Control Panel, and choose Network Connections. Then right click on your default connection, usually Local Area Connection or Dial-up Connection if you are using Dial-up, and left click on properties. Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item and select the radio button that says Obtain DNS servers automatically. Click OK twice.

And then:

Go to Start > Run, enter cmd and click OK.
  • At the Dos Prompt Screen, type in cd\ and then press .
  • Now type in ipconfig /flushdns and then press . (notice the space after ipconfig)
  • Close the command prompt window.
And finally I would like you to run an online virus scan. Please see the instructions below for running a Panda Active Scan:

Panda Scan Instructions:

- Go to the Panda Active Scan Site – http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/ActiveScan.htm
- Once you are on the Panda site, click the Scan your PC button
- A new window will open…click the Check Now button
- Enter your Country
- Enter your State/Province
- Enter your e-mail address and click send
- Select either Home User or Company
- Click the big Scan Now button
- If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
- It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
- When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
- When the scan completes save the report to your desktop so you can find it easily.

Once you've finished please reboot your PC and post back with the results of the Virustotal Scan, the Panda Active Scan and a fresh Hijack This log.
:)
Hello Skywalker45!
Thank you for explaining a bit as we go along. It helps me to feel less hopeless!

And so to tonight's thrilling installment! :D

Hi Tracy. The log looks much better. Good Job! Now we need to look for and delete some files, but before we do that I think you forgot to upload one file to Virustotal for me. Could you please go there again and upload this file:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\CSQZX.EXE

Post back the results in your next reply. From this point you might want to print these instructions as you will not have access to the internet for the rest of this fix.

Please boot the PC into safe mode, explained below:
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Login on your usual account.
Once in safe mode please use Windows Explorer to delete the following (do not worry if some don't exist):

C:\Program Files\Common Files\updater<—This folder.
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\f3initialsetup1.0.0.5.inf<—This file.
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\ied.inf<—This file.
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\start.INF<—This file.
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\start10.inf<—This file.
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\start32.inf<—This file.
C:\WINDOWS\switchagreement.txt<—This file.
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts.bho<—This file.
C:\WINDOWS\system32\{E737315C-32BF-4D10-8378-B2E74D3F629F}.exe<—This file. NOTE: Might be called KillAndClean.exe, so delete that one too if found.

Now empty your recycle bin.

Reboot the PC in normal mode and post the results from Virustotal for the file listed above.
:)
Whoops! Sorry about that Skywalker45. I think I was starting to get a bit over-confident! :) I have now uploaded C:\WINDOWS\System32\CSQZX.EXE to Virustotal. Regards Tracy x
Hi Tracy. I think it best if we delete that file. Please boot back into safe mode according to the instructions on the AVG scan.

Use Windows Explorer to look for and delete the following:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\CSQZX.EXE<—This file.

Reboot into normal mode and post a fresh Hijack This log.
:D
Hi again Skywalker45 :)

Well, believe it or not, it's not there!…
Do you think maybe Spyware Detector picked it up and deleted it?
Can't imagine where it's gone otherwise. I definitely looked in the right place, both in Safe Mode and Normal Mode… Nothing!

Well Tracy. That's good news that it wasn't there. Your log is clean. One thing I did notice is that your Java is out of date. Please follow the instructions below to update it. Also please read below suggestions on staying clean. It's been a pleasure working with you. By the way, you might want to open Notepad and uncheck "word wrap" in the "format" menu. Just in case you ever want to post another log. It makes them easier to read.
:D

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update to the latest version…

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 9.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications."
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement."
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-1_5_0_09-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.
Congratulations. Your log is clean! You should reward yourself very liberally! Now some pointers on how to stay clean and keep your sanity. You may be thinking now "how did I get infected?" Please read this great article: So how did I get infected in the first place.

Next follow the instructions below to keep yourself free from infection.

Disable and then enable system restore to purge infected restore points.

Turn OFF System Restore.
  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • Check Turn off System Restore.
  • Click Apply.
  • Click OK.
To enable system restore:
  • Uncheck the box by Turn off system restore
  • Click Apply.
  • System restore is now on.
  • Create a restore point by clicking Start—>All programs—>Accessories—>System tools—>System restore
  • Select the bubble that says Create restore point. Then click Next.
  • Give the restore point a meaningful name like post malware removal. Then click OK.
Rehide hidden files and folders. During your fix if you were asked to "show hidden files and folders" you should go back now and re-hide them. You wouldn't want to accidentally delete important files. Follow the instructions below:
  • Click "Start".
  • Click "My Computer".
  • Select the "Tools" menu and click "Folder Options".
  • Select the "View" tab.
  • Under the "Hidden files and folders" heading, select "Do not show hidden files and folders".
  • Check the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
  • Check the "Hide file extensions for known file types".
  • Click Apply then click "OK".

Update with SP2 if you don't aleady have it.
Visit Windows Update and follow the onscreen instructions to download and install SP2.
This is a time consuming process, even with a fast connection. If you use a dial-up connection you should consider getting a FREE copy
directly from Microsoft or get a friend with a fast connection to burn a copy of the upgrade to CD for you.

Update the OS regularly

Set up system to ensure a regular update of the Operating System.

Visit Windows Update on a weekly/biweekly REGULAR basis.

Automatically:
  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.

  • Click Apply
  • Click OK

Secure your web browser
  • Open Internet Explorer and click on the Tools menu and then click on
    Security
  • Click the Internet icon
  • Click onCustom Level.
  • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
  • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
  • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
  • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
  • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
  • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
  • Change the Allow paste operations via script to Disable
  • Click on OK
  • Save (if asked).
  • Click on Applybutton
  • Click on OK
Alternatively you could use another browser such as
Mozilla Firefox (My personal favorite!)
Opera

Get Some Protection
The following programs are useful in the fight against Malware. Best of all, they're FREE.
Download and install any or all . Be warned though —- You must update regularly. Check once a week!
  • Ad-Aware SE - This is a
program that scans for and removes known spyware from your machine.
  • Spybot Search & Destroy -Similar to Ad-Aware but more configurable and incorporates Teatime, a memory resident utility that protects the system registry.
  • Spyware Blaster -
It Prevents the addition of ActiveX Controls on your machines by
    isolating the system registry.
A good Antiviral program is essential. The ones listed below are free. Please download and use ONE of these if you're not already running an Antivirus program:
And Finally………Lock the door with a Firewall. Windows XP comes with its own simple firewall but I prefer to substitute it with one of the below, again these are free: I wish you very happy, and most importantly, safe surfing on the information superhighway. Just remember it can be dangerous.
