So my dad said his computer was having issues, little did I know how bad it was. SpyBot removed a bunch of bad stuff, then I enabled his system updates again. Running an old version of Win2k Pro on his machine.

Anyway, ran HJT and here is the log:

I see what looks like alot of weird DLLs that probably shouldn't be there, but could use some help with this one. I think his computer has been pretty messed up for awhile, luckily SpyBot enabled me to get it usable again…. now I'd like to get it cleaned up for good (he's not super computer savvy anymore and we're in town on vacation).

Thanks for any suggestions,

Louie
Hello and welcome to the forums

* Download Combofix to your desktop.
Doubleclick combo.exe
Follow the prompts.
Don't click on the window while the fix is running, because that will cause your system to hang.

When finished, it should produce a log, combofix.txt.
Post this log in your next reply together with a new hijackthislog.
Thanks for the quick note and suggestions. Here is the combofix output log:

Let me know if you see anything strange…. some of those DLLs don't look right at all and they came up as quarantined in combofix…

Thanks so much!

Louie
Download Pocket Killbox
http://www.atribune.org/downloads/KillBox.exe
If you already have Killbox first ensure it is this version !.

Then double-click on the killbox.exe program.

Start Killbox and click on Tools->Delete Temp Files.
Then select the option labeled Delete on reboot.

Do not close killbox, and open notepad, by clicking on Start, then Run, and typing notepad.exe and pressing the OK button.

When notepad is open, copy and paste the following bolded text into the notepad screen. You do this by highlighting each of the below bolded filenames and then pressing Control-C on your keyboard. Then click on the open notepad windows and press Control-V to paste the contents into the notepad.

C:\WINNT\system32\kkkwbdc.dll
C:\WINNT\system32\pbozlal.dll
C:\WINNT\system32\czvxapb.dll
C:\WINNT\system32\lbwkokk.dll
C:\WINNT\system32\nnhqmal.dll
C:\WINNT\system32\ywizrgl.dll
C:\WINNT\system32\ewmrji.dll
C:\WINNT\system32\oqnglii.dll
C:\WINNT\system32\omsxyig.dll
C:\WINNT\system32\wnstscc.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\bltueqi.dll
C:\WINNT\system32\ztssrmc.dll
C:\WINNT\system32\mscdaux.dll
C:\WINNT\system32\senssrv.dll
C:\WINNT\system32\testtestt.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\stonedrv.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\d50ce443.exe
C:\tskmgr.exe
C:\WINNT\bl4ck.com

Return to Killbox, go to the File menu and select Paste from Clipboard.

Still in Killbox, click the red-and-white Delete File button. Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click No at the Pending Operations prompt.

If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually

"copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Here is the new HJT output. The computer is still doing the popups with the 'spyware removal' caption. Also, on reboot, all the DLL files that were deleted by killbox showed up as 'could not find file' dialog boxes on reboot….

The system didn't really seem to reboot slowly after installing ATF cleaner. The error messages on reboot into Windows (the missing DLL files) didn't appear anymore, so that is good. The only thing I could not get HJT to remove was the O4 startup : protected and the O4 globalstartup : protected lines…. it says they are in use and to remove them through taskmanager, but I can't seem to find them there…

Thanks again so much for this help… should I push to remove the two remaining O4 issues?

Louie
One other thing… what about this line as well: O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Ultimate Cleaner] C:\Program Files\Ultimate Cleaner\App.exe That was a program that was installed (as part of the virus I think) but it is gone… Louie
We're getting there

This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works. It will create a file named:
c:\rapport.txt

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other options until you are asked to do so!

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Please post:
C:\rapport.txt
Ok, here we go, here is the output from smitfraud….

All problems appear to be gone from the computer as far as the popups, etc that existed… but I assume there is some work to do with the 'protected' items…

Running the Clean

Warning: running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

Please print out or copy these instructions/tutorial to Notepad as the internet will not be (while in Safe Mode) available to you at certain points of the removal process. Make sure to work through all the Steps in the exact order in which they are listed below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before moving on with the fixes.

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Login on your usual account.
______________________________

Open the SmitfraudFix Folder, then double-click smitfraudfix.cmd file to start the tool.
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press Enter.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?" answer Yes by typing Y and hit Enter.

[external image: Posted Image]

The tool will also check if wininet.dll is infected. If a clean version is found, you will be prompted to replace wininet.dll. Answer Yes to the question "Replace infected file ?" by typing Y and hit Enter.

A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process, if you computer does not restart automatically please do it yourself manually. Reboot in Safe Mode.

The tool will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

I think we're all set on this end now. I don't see much else to fret about and the system is behaving exceptionally stable. Thanks again for all your help…. I've been hearing my dad complain about his system for the last month or so, but this is the first chance we had to make it back up north….
