Welcome to the forum :wavey:

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only

Don't run it yet.

Copy and paste the contents of the quote box below into notepad.

Save it as file name: "fixme.reg" (not including the quotes). Save as file type: *All files* and save it on your Desktop.

Thanks so much!

Here's what happened - I couldn't delete O4 - Startup: .protected or O4 - Global Startup: .protected and after I ran ATF-Cleaner I couldn't find any of the files mentioned - either of the 44b6adc.exe files or the links.exe file, though I showed hidden files.

This is a computer that I have recently started working with and it had no protection until a few weeks ago except for a 2004 version of Norton whose subscription had lapsed. I downloaded AVG Free, Ad-aware SE, Spybot S&D, ewido, and Spyware Doctor. After deleting some trojans etc, these days they all come up clean (except for some cookies which I delete each time) except Spyware Doctor, which points out (I think) a trojan and WinAntiVirus or something, but the free version won't delete those and I can't find them (they start with HKLM). Things were running okay until I let some other people use the machine a few days ago and now IE won't work. I uninstalled it and am waiting to reinstall it until I'm pretty sure that there aren't any more bugs in the system. Do I have the right programs on here? Should I get rid of Norton since I have AVG? Again, _thanks_.

Yes, an uninstall of Norton is advisable. Reboot afterwards.

Copy the text in the following quote box into Notepad:

dir "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup" > files.txt
dir "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup" /ah >> files.txt
dir "%userprofile%\Start Menu\Programs\Startup" >> files.txt
dir "%userprofile%\Start Menu\Programs\Startup" /ah >> files.txt

Save it to your desktop as ff.bat

Now, the ff.bat file on the desktop.

It will create a file named "files.txt" on the desktop.

Open it with Notepad and paste it's contents into your next post.

After uninstalling Norton, and rebooting, please post a new log file. Sometimes it doesn't uninstall everything.

If you can post the REG keys Spyware Doctor is complaining about, maybe I can help remove them.
:)
Thanks - I got rid of those two files, uninstalled Norton, restarted, ran Spyware Doctor and this time it didn't find those two baddies just some cookies, and then ran Hijackthis again. Here's the log - is it all better?
This is the best forum ever!

All the Norton is gone! About Internet Explorer, I have uninstalled it but I know there are pieces still there (I can see them on the log file). I also know that it is bundled with Windows and don't want that to stop working. IE was not able to find pages, which is why I got rid of it, but I do want to re-download (I like Firefox but want IE too despite its problems). Should I try to download IE now or get rid of the traces first to make sure that it will work right? Thanks so much for everything - I love this site!
