Hello all. When I start up my computer and log into Windows XP Pro w/sp2 i get the error messege " Windows cannot find c:\program. Please make sure you typed the name correctly and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search." This happens before the desktop shortcuts are loaded. After I click OK on the messege the desktop loads and everything works fine except the system beeps at me time after time after time. It is the beep that typically is sounded after you try to do something it will not allow you to do. I ahve tried to boot up in safe mode and there is no messege or beeps. This has prompted me to DL the program and post the log file and plead for help from anyone who is willing to help me. Many thanks in advance.

Somebody??? Please help the system has been beeoping at me for a couple weeks and I am about ready to wipe it and start over but would really like to avoid that if at all possible. Thanks Dravyn
Welcome to the forum :wavey:

Sounds like you have a corrupted registry entry somewhere.

I don't see it in your log file.

The error message doesn't give any indication what "program" can't be found, does it?

Run Hijack This!.

Click on Open Misc Tools section

To the right of Generate Startuplist log, there are two boxes.

Check them both, then click Generate Startuplist log.

"Copy/paste" the startuplist log into this thread.
:)
No, the error messege does not give any clues as to what programit is trying to access. It simply says cannot find c:/program. Thank you for taking the time to look through my log and hopefully you/we can figure this thing out. Here is the log as per your request…

Does the phrase "needle in a haystack" mean anything to you?

I don't see anything there.

Try this:

Download combofix.exe from the link below:

Combofix.exe

Save it to your desktop.

Run it.

When finished, it will produce a log for you.

Post that log in your next reply.
:)

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall
Yes needle in a hay stack is about right. This one has me and all my friends stumped. Here is the log as per your request. Thank you. The proverbial "needle" still eludes me…

Copy the text in the following quote box into Notepad:

regedit /e hjto41.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run"
regedit /e hjto42.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices"
regedit /e hjto43.txt "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run"

Save it to your desktop as ff.bat

Now, the ff.bat file on the desktop.

It will create these files on the desktop:

hjto41.txt

hjto42.txt

hjto43.txt

Open them with Notepad, and paste them into your next post.

You may then delete them off the desktop.

Please go here:

Silent Runners.org

Download/run the silentrunners.vbs script.

If your antivirus balks, tell it to allow this script - It's safe.

When you run it, click "Yes" to the "Skip supplementary searches".

It will take a few minutes to run.

When it fininshes, it will tell you what text file it put the results in (it will be in the same folder the VBS file was downloaded into).

Open it up with Notepad, and paste it into your next post.

We might be getting somewhere….

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\ {++}
"Microsoft Works Update Detection" = "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Works\WkDetect.exe" [file not found]

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\ {++}
"WatchDog" = "C:\Program Files\mobile PhoneTools\WatchDog.exe" [file not found]

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce\ {++}
"BackWeb Upgrade" = "C:\Program Files\Logitech\Desktop Messenger\8876480\Users\Dravyn\NewVersion\upgrade.exe 23966 PlacedChanDir" [file not found]

Can you verify the existence (or not) of these files:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Works\WkDetect.exe

C:\Program Files\mobile PhoneTools\WatchDog.exe

C:\Program Files\Logitech\Desktop Messenger\8876480\Users\Dravyn\NewVersion\upgrade.exe

These files do not exist. The third one ends at Dravyn. I am guessing that something is trying to acccess these files that are no longer there and causing all my beeps. Where should i go from here? And thank you sincerely..
CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!

Run Hijack This!
Click "Do a systen scan only".
Then "check" the box to the left of these item(s):

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WatchDog] C:\Program Files\mobile PhoneTools\WatchDog.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [BackWeb Upgrade] C:\Program Files\Logitech\Desktop Messenger\8876480\Users\Dravyn\NewVersion\upgrade.exe 23966 PlacedChanDir

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Microsoft Works Update Detection] C:\Program Files\Microsoft Works\WkDetect.exe

Then click "Fix checked" and close Hijack This!.

Reboot.

Have we made any progress?
Yes and no. The error messege is gone when i start up the machine however the beeps have seemed to increase. After fixing the selected lines i ran HJT again after reboot and they were still there. Seems awefully strange to me… D
Disable SpySweeper:
You have SpySweeper installed. While this is a great program, we need to temporarily disable (not uninstall) the program because it might stop our fix.
  • Open it click >Options over to the left then >program options>Uncheck "load at windows startup"
  • Over to the left click "shields" and uncheck all there.
  • Uncheck" home page shield".
  • Uncheck ''automatically restore default without notification".
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable SpySweeper again.

Fix these with Hijackthis!:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WatchDog] C:\Program Files\mobile PhoneTools\WatchDog.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [BackWeb Upgrade] C:\Program Files\Logitech\Desktop Messenger\8876480\Users\Dravyn\NewVersion\upgrade.exe 23966 PlacedChanDir

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Microsoft Works Update Detection] C:\Program Files\Microsoft Works\WkDetect.exe

Reboot.

Post a new HijackThis! log and let me know "the state of things".
:)
