I have been having some pop-ups get past my blockers, and my computer seems to be running a bit slower than normal. Here is my HJT log - any help is appreciated!

Hi Labmom6193,
Welcome to the TomCoyote Forums
My name is mschroe919 and I am going to read your log.
I would like to help you So if you would….
Please be patient and I will be back as soon as possible.

Thanks mschroe919
While I am coming back perhaps you can do these first

Let me suggest you copy and paste these instructions into word pad, and print it out so you can follow the steps in order.
Please read through this post since I am asking you to download specific software to assist you.

Some programs needed to clean up and check your PC. I will be asking you to download

(Note you may allready have these if so make sure latest versions and run them when asked.)

FIRST:

You need to set WinXP to show all hidden and system
files.
Here is how:

* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View Tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.

Follow these steps in order:

NEXT:

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.

Download Here:
http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1

This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

NEXT:

Follow steps in order.
REMEMBER IF YOU HAVE THESE MAKE SURE UPDATED BEFORE RUNNING.

STEP 1.
======

Let’s check for Malware/Spyware on your computer which is best dealt with by spyware-removal programs used one after the other.

Ad-Aware SE by Lavasoft:

1. Download 'Ad-Aware SE'. Get it here:
http://www.download.com/3000-2144-10045910…&tag=button
2. Install according to the instructions in "How To Setup Spybot SD and Ad-Aware SE" Get it here:
http://www.tomcoyote.org/aawsb.php
3. Next, 'Check for Updates' by clicking on the 'world globe' second from the right at the top of your Ad-Aware SE window.
4. Install the updates.
5. Close ALL windows except Ad-Aware SE
6. Click on 'Start' and choose 'full scan' for a full scan.
7. Quarantine anything that it finds and SAVE the log file.
8.REBOOT to finish removing what Ad-Aware SE found and clear memory.

Please let me know if anything can not be cleaned by these utilities.

STEP 2.
======

1. Lets run your Spybot S&D (make sure you update it first}

2. In the Menu Bar at the top of the Spybot window you will see 'Mode'. Make certain that 'default mode' has a check mark beside it.

3. Close ALL windows except Spybot S&D

4. Click the button to ‘Search for Updates’ then download and install the Updates.

5. Next click the button ‘Check for Problems’

6. When Spybot is complete, it will be showing ‘RED’ entries bold 'Black' entries and ‘GREEN’ entries in the window

7. Make certain there is a check mark beside all of the RED entries ONLY.

8. Choose ‘Fix Selected Problems’ and allow Spybot to fix the RED entries.

9.REBOOT to complete the scan and clear memory

NOW OK TO REBOOT

STEP 3.
======
Run a Panda online ActiveScan
http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan.htm

On the top right go to: Free Use ActiveScan
Follow the prompts, provide the required info, select: Scan Now!
Allow the ActiveX download.

Select a device to scan: Local Disks

Next, select: See Report
Then select, Save Report and save to a location where you can find the report

Allow them to remove anything they find.
If anything should be found that it couldn’t clean, please WRITE DOWN the FULL PATHS AND FILENAMES. and include on next post with new log.
==========================================

Please run the HijackThis program and post a new log here, as well as the results from the Panda ActiveScan.
Also tell me how your PC is doing at this time.
Thanks and good luck

mschroe919,

First off thanks so much for your reply.
I think everything is fixed, but I'd like an "all's clear" from someone who really knows. Having had a trojan a few years back and also having removed several viruses from a neighbor's computer, it really surprised me that something had gotten into mine. (thought I had taken enough precautions).

Before I received your reply I remembered a program that I had used on my neighbor's machine and I searched, found it and d/l it. It's called "A squared". When I ran that it detected over 35 traces of files from software I had "thought" was all uninstalled. Surprise, surprise………….

I rebooted in safe mode, and ran another HJT file and to my semi-trained eye, it looked clean.
Since I turned the PC on this morning, there have been no popups……… :D

However, I got your reply and followed your instructions

Re: hidden files
Verified that I had already done that.

Re: ATF Cleaner - had never heard of that program. I do use CCleaner, they appear to be similar.
I d/l pre your instructions and ran it. (will keep for further use - thanks!)

Re: Spy-bot and Ad-aware
Had already done that, but ran them both again to make sure. nothing was found in either one.
I do have a question regarding Ad-aware that maybe you can answer………..is it necessary to scan in the "custom" mode all the time, or should that be used only if you think there's a problem? I know that the other modes take less time, but do they really dig deep enough??

Re: Panda
just finished running that and here are the results
No viruses or other malicious software have been found!

Now here is my latest JHT log.
Please let me know if you see anything suspicious……….
I have a question about one of the entries in the log………..it's the 04 entry that reads RUN ONCE and then is something to do with McAfee……….I've never had Mcafee installed on this PC and wonder why it appears and what it is……….

Hi Labmom6193
Welcome back to the TomCoyote Forums.
You PC log looks fine, but let do a few things to keep it that way:
FIRST:

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.

Download Here:
http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1

This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NEXT:
Now that we see your PC is clean, here is some programs I suggest to help keep it clean.
This is a canned all clean speech I give to all after they are clean.
==================================
Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Note you may have some of theses programs allready, if so just a reminder to keep updated.

FIRST:
You need to create a new Clean restore point.

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn it back on.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Remove the Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.
===================================================================
NEXT:
Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:

1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
2. Click once on the Security tab
3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
4. Click once on the Custom Level button.

1. Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
2. Change theDownload unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
3. Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
4. Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
5. Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
6. Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
7. When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
8. If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.

Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
====================================================================

Use an Anti Virus Software
It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. See these links for a listing of some on line & their stand-alone anti virus programs:
If you don't have one here are some of the better AV products.

Symantec/Norton Antivirus: http://www.symantec.com/nav/nav_9xnt/
Kapersky AV: http://www.kaspersky.com/buyonline.html?info=25
Nod32 : http://www.nod32.com/home/home.htm
Panda AV: http://www.pandasoftware.com/
McAfee Virusscan: http://us.mcafee.com/root/package.asp?pkgid=100
AVG Anti-Virus (Free version available) http://www.grisoft.com/

Update your Anti Virus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
============================================================
NEXT:

Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.
If you don't have one see link below for a free firewall:

ZoneAlarm:
http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/cata….jsp?lid=nav_za

Sunbelt Kerio:

================================================================================

Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.

This will provide real-time spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software

Get the download and tutorial for Spybot S&D here:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial43.html
=========================================================================

Install Ad-Aware
Install and download Ad-Aware. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software in conjunction with Spybot. The download and tutorial on installing & using Ad-aware can be found here:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial48.html

====================================================================

Install SpywareBlaster
SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. A article on anti-malware products with links for this program and others can be found here:

http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
========================================================================

Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
Happy surfing the net

I only ask one thing….please
Please post back and let us know what you think about our forum, we are all volunteers and would like a little smile.
