Post (reply) with a fresh HijackThis log and the AVG anti-spyware report..
Hi Susan,

firstly i'd like to thank you for your time and patience in helping me out. When I ran LSPfix there was no sign of the files quartz32.dll.

Also when I went to fix check the list you gave me on hijack this the following two were not there:

O23 - Service: Distributed Link Tracking Clientbjh (ServiceBJH) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\BJH\server.exe
O23 - Service: sserver - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\help\sserver.exe
.

I could not find and delete the following files:

C:\PROGRA~1\svhost32.exe<=file
c:\program Files\Òä¶à¶à\MyShares.exe <=f

and the computer wouldn't let me delete this one: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\UserData\IEHelper_5059.dll<=file.

When I turned on my laptop after completing the list you gave me there is a marked improvement, however there are stii unwanted Chinese pop ups and my homepage has been forcefully changed. Here is the saved logs you asked for:

Many thanks,

Kevin
Glad you have seen a little improvement. I would like to obtain additional information before trying some fixes.

STEP 1.
======
Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

http://www.atribune.org/downloads/l2mfix.exe
http://www.downloads.subratam.org/l2mfix.exe

You may receive pop-up asking if you will allow script to run when you perform the following instructions. Please allow the script to run.

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

If you receive, while running option #1, an error similar like: ''C:\windows\system32\cmd.exe
C:\windows\system32\autoexec.nt the system file is not suitable for running ms-dos and microsoft windows applications. choose close to terminate the application.."…then please use option 5 or the web page link in the l2mfix folder to solve this error condition. do not run the fix portion without fixing this first.

Rootkit Revealer

Please download
Rootkit Revealer
to your desktop.
  • Unzip the file.
  • Turn off your real time antivirus for a moment.
  • Then go to file->scan
  • This will take some time.
  • When it's done, go to file->save
  • save the logfile to the desktop
Then past the contents here.
*Don't forget to turn your AV back on afterwards*

Please post (reply) with the reports from the l2mfix and the rootkit revealer log.
Hi Susan,

I've followed your instructions and here are the logs:

Delete Files with Killbox

Download Pocket Killbox from http://www.downloads.subratam.org/KillBox.zip and unzip it; save it to your Desktop. DO NOT RUN IT YET.
==========
Double-click on KillBox.exe to launch the program. It is the red circle with a large white X in it
- Highlight the files in bold RED below and press the Ctrl key and the C key at the same time to copy them to the clipboard

In Killbox click on the File menu and then the Paste from Clipboard item
in the Full Path of File to Delete field drop down the arrow and make sure that all of the files are listed
(Please note that the tool checks your computer for the presence of the files pasted into the box so if files are not present, it is possible that you might not see all files you pasted into the box.)
  • Click the option to Delete on Reboot
  • Click End Explorer Shell while Killing File
  • Click All Files right of the flashing green "Single files"
  • Click Yes when it asks "Files will be Removed on Reboot, Do you want to reboot now?"
(Note: If you get a "PendingFileRenameOperations Registry Data has been Removed by External Process!" message then just reboot manually)

If you have any issues with this method you can copy and paste the lines one at a time into the killbox top box. Then click the "Single File" button. Then click the Red X …and for the confirmation message that will appear, you will need to click Yes. A second message will ask to Reboot now? you will need to click No until the last one at which time you click yes to allow the reboot.

Post (reply) with a fresh HijackThis log and we will take another look.

Hi Kevin, things are looking better!

STEP 1.
======
Scan with HijackThis. Place a check against each of the following:
F3 - REG:win.ini: load=C:\WINDOWS\rundl132.exe

Close all windows or browsers except for Hijackthis. Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

STEP 2.
======
Delete Files with Killbox

Skip the download if you still have it.
Download Pocket Killbox from http://www.downloads.subratam.org/KillBox.zip and unzip it; save it to your Desktop. DO NOT RUN IT YET.
==========
Double-click on KillBox.exe to launch the program. It is the red circle with a large white X in it
- Highlight the files in bold RED below and press the Ctrl key and the C key at the same time to copy them to the clipboard
C:\WINDOWS\command\rundll32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\rundl132.exe
C:\WINDOWS\1Sy.exe
C:\WINDOWS\realupdate.exe

STEP 3.
Download SDFix and save it to your desktop.

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
  • In Safe Mode, right click the SDFix.zip folder and choose Extract All,
  • Open the extracted folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the script.
  • It will remove the Trojan Services then make some repairs to the registry and prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • Your system will take longer that normal to restart as the fixtool will be running and removing files.
  • When the desktop loads the Fixtool will complete the removal and display Finished, then press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Finally open the SDFix folder on your desktop and copy and paste the contents of the results file Report.txt back onto the forum with a new HijackThis log
Hi Susan,

I followed yor instructions forSDFix however when I came to restart the computer and pressed any key it would not allow a restart claiming it was unable to find the appropriate file. This is what the report says anhow plus another hijack log……….

Hi Kevin,

There are a couple of entries that are being difficult to remove so I will consult with others about them. Meanwhile please do the following:

STEP 1.
======
Look2Me

You have the latest version of VX2.

==========
Now run this online scan using Internet Explorer:
Kaspersky Online Scanner from http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
  • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
  • Standard
  • Scan Options:
  • Scan Archives
  • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:
  • Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.

Please post (reply) with the report from the l2mfix and the information from Kapersky.
Please do this also.

STEP 1.
======
WinPFind
Please Download the following tools to assist us in removing this infection! Download WinPFind from http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/winpfind.php
  • Right Click the Zip Folder and Select Extract All
  • Extract it somewhere you will remember like the Desktop
  • Don’t do anything with it yet!
Reboot.
When the machine first starts again it will generally list some equipment that is installed in your machine, amount of memory, hard drives installed etc. At this point you should gently tap the F8 key repeatedly until you are presented with a Windows XP Advanced Options menu.
Select the option for Safe Mode using the arrow keys.
Then press enter on your keyboard to boot into Safe Mode

  • Doubleclick WinPFind.exe
  • Click on Configure Scan Options.
  • Remove all the checkmarks under Folder Options on the left side by clicking the button Remove All, uncheck Run Addon's and click Apply.
  • Click Start Scan
    It will scan the entire System, so please be patient! This scan may take awhile
Once the Scan is Complete
  • Reboot your computer into normal mode.
  • Go to the WinPFind folder
  • Locate WinPFind.txt
  • Copy the results from the WinPFind.txt file and post the results in your next reply.
Here is the first 2 logs you asked for, the third one will follow in the next thread. Thanks. Here is the WinPfind log:

WARNING: not all files found by this scanner are bad. Consult with a knowledgable person before proceeding.

If you see a message in the titlebar saying "Not responding…" you can ignore it. Windows sometimes displays this message due to the high volume of disk I/O. As long as the hard disk light is flashing, the program is still working properly.

in the Full Path of File to Delete field drop down the arrow and make sure that all of the files are listed

If you have any issues with this method you can copy and paste the lines one at a time into the killbox top box. Then click the "Single File" button. Then click the Red X …and for the confirmation message that will appear, you will need to click Yes.
