Here is the log. I have run Ad-aware, and Spybot Search and Destory and all Windows updates. Tried to download AVG Antivirus but it won't run.

Thanks in advance for your assistance!!

Hello and welcome to the TC forums

Please go HERE and do a online scan.
Let me know what is found.

After scan, reboot and post a new HijackThis log

Also let me know how the computer is running now.
Here is the new log after the scan (WOW 28 virus's 7 adware) and clean.

(This is a bosses home computer I am cleaning up for him).

When I first got the computer - it was very very very sluggish, mouse and keyboard slow in responding. Could not get on the internet.

System is running much faster and keyboard mouse reaction time is appropriate. As you can see, I can now get on the internet (thankfully!) Once I got online, I found extra browsers popping up and redirecting. (had another gambling browser load up immediately after the scan.

Thanks for your quick response and help. I have counted on and been very happy with other postings to TomCoyote.

Thanks!
Tammy

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
c:\dfndrff_e18.exe - access denied - would not let me delete.

System seems to be working pretty good. Speed is good, keyboard mouse reaction time good. No second browser pop up.

I noticed a number of other files (not exe) named dfndrff and kybrdff - are these a concern?

Heres my new HJT log.

Thanks!
Tami

I noticed a number of other files (not exe) named dfndrff and kybrdff - are these a concern?

Yes those are all bad.

Close all windows and browsers.
Open HijackThis

Click on Open Misc Tools
Click on Delete a File On Reboot
Click once on the file below to select it:
c:\dfndrff_e18.exe

Do the same for any files named dfndrff and kybrdff

Click on the Back button to exit Process Manager

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

They are asking for a registration number – they never asked for an e-mail address - this was supposed to be the free beta version with no registration required. Do you have a link to the correct free AVG? Thanks! Tammy

If you dont have any programs like these, I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Safe Surfing. :D

I would also suggest you read this:
So how did I get infected in the first place?
by Tony Klein

MOST IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and IE to get all the Latest Security Patches to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the internet. Please go to
Microsoft Windows and Internet Explorer Updates to get the critical updates.

If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the cirtical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update
