Hi folks,, first post here. I have had luck in the past getting rid of csw and about blank and other stuff but i've been away from computers for at least a year. So dont know really how to start again to rid myself of this other than i remember hijack this was instrumental to the process. So thought I try a new approach and just ask straight out for help then try to decipher and diagnose myself.
Heres my log: thxs in advance for the help

Hi Toro,
and welcome to TomCoyote forum.
My name is Rosty and I'm going to help you with your log.

Please install an firewall first, because it doesn't make any sense to remove malware from your system if no scanner is preventing them from reinfecting your computer.

Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over:
Kerio Personal Firewall OR ZoneAlarm are good FREE firewalls.

Read Understanding and using firewalls to learn more about using firewalls

VERY IMPORTANT: Never install more than ONE firewall on your system! Several together can give problems and decrease their reliability and effectiveness!

Optional Removal:
Viewpoint Manager

Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This will change from what we know in 2006 read this article: http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546

A side note about AIM Messenger and Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint is one of the graphic engines that AOL uses and it is bundled with the application. If you continue to use AIM Messenger, it would likely be reinstalled. Or if you recieve some of the AOL E-cards it may ask you to download and run this program to view and run the graphics in E-cards.
Your call

You can remove the program now, or if you do not intend to use it. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present.

* Viewpoint
* Viewpoint Manager
* Viewpoint Media Player
And reboot your computer.

Please open HijackThis and click do a scan only and place a check next to the following entries (if present]:

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.frame.crazywinnings.com (HKLM)
O23 - Service: Network Security Service (%AF夶À¨) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\mfcpj.exe (file missing)

If you have decided to remove it:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ViewMgr] C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.Exit HijackThis.

Next,
[*]Please go HERE to run the Trend Micro™ HouseCall Scan.

[*]Click Scan now. It's free!

[*]Read and put a Check next to Yes I accept the terms of use.

[*]Click the Launching HouseCall>> button.

[*]If confirmed that HouseCall can run on your system, under Using Java-based HouseCall kernel click the Starting HouseCall>> button.

[*]You may receive a Security Warning about the TrendMicro Java applet, click YES.

[*]Under Scan complete computer for malware, grayware, and vulnerabilities click the Next>> button.

[*]Please be patient while it installs, updates, and scans your system.

[*]Once the scan is complete, it will take you to the summary page.

[*]Under Cleanup options, choose clean all detected infections automatically.

[*]Click the Clean now>> button.

[*]If anything was found you may be prompted to run the scan again, you can just close the browser window.
Download ATF Cleaner
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
  • Click the Empty Selected button.

Hi Toro,
thanks for the log.

You are missing one important program on that computer: An antivirus.
This is somewhat suicidal in today's digital world.
You need to install an antivirus program as soon as you can and run a complete scan of the computer:

* Antivir
* Avast Free
* AVG Free
* Bitdefender Free

Install it and then run a full scan. Let it quarantine/delete anything it finds. Let me know if there is anything that it reports but can not remove.
Please print out this instructions, because you have to close this window during the fix!!!

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!

Run Hijack This!
Click "Do a systen scan only".
Then "check" the box to the left of these item(s):

O23 - Service: Network Security Service (%AF夶À¨) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\mfcpj.exe (file missing)

Then click "Fix checked" and close Hijack This!.

Now Go to:

Start –> Run

In the box type in services.msc then hit (or click OK)

In the Name column in the next screen look for:

Network Security Service

it.

In the dialogue box that pops up, check in the Path to executable box.

It should say: C:\WINDOWS\mfcpj.exe

That's how to be sure you have the right one.

Now, click Stop to stop that rogue process.

In the Startup type box, change it to Disabled.

Click Apply then OK

Close the services.msc window.

Reboot and post a new HijackThis.
Heres my new log,, looks clean
one question tho. You mentioned above that

In the dialogue box that pops up, check in the Path to executable box.

It should say: C:\WINDOWS\mfcpj.exe

Mine says C:\WINDOWS\mfcpj.exe\s and it doesnt let me edit it. However it is disabled now as per your
instructions.

Thxs for your help !! Do you see any other un necesary processes here,, I like to streamline for gaming.

Hi Toro,
thanks for the new log.

In the dialogue box that pops up, check in the Path to executable box.

It should say: C:\WINDOWS\mfcpj.exe

Mine says C:\WINDOWS\mfcpj.exe\s and it doesnt let me edit it. However it is disabled now as per your
instructions.

That's good.

Your log looks clean.
Do you have any problems?
Please let me know.

Disable and Enable System Restore. - You should disable and enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

You can find instructions on how to enable and re-enable system restore here:
Windows XP System Restore Guide.

Regards,

Rosty.
Hi Toro,
good to hear you don't have any problems.

If you dont have any programs like these, I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Safe Surfing. :)

I would also suggest you read this:
So how did I get infected in the first place?
by Tony Klein

Regards,

Rosty.
Well i dl'ed Zone alarm firewall and the AVG anti virus as per your instructions way at the top of this thread. Question tho Lavasoft Ad Aware (which i've had for a long time) keeps picking up something called Adware LinkOptimizer and it doesnt go away.
Hi Toro,

Lavasoft Ad Aware (which i've had for a long time) keeps picking up something called Adware LinkOptimizer and it doesnt go away.

That isn't good news. :rant2:

Please run a free online scan with Kaspersky AntiVirus (works only with MS Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher).
Go to http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner and click the "Kaspersky Online Scanner" button (NOT "Kaspersky File Scanner").

* In the new window that opens, click the "Accept" button to accept the user agreement, install the ActiveX control, and download the program.
* When you get the Windows dialog asking if you want to install this software, click the "Install" button.
* When the "Update progress" line changes to "Ready" and the "NEXT ->" button lights up with a green arrow, click it.
* Click on the "Scan Settings" button, and in the next window select the "extended" database, and click Ok.
* Under "Please select a target to scan:", click My Computer to start the scan.

When the scan is finished, click the "Save as Text" button, and save the file as kavscan.txt to your Desktop, close the Kaspersky On-line Scanner window, and post the text in kavscan.txt and a new HijackThis log in your next reply.

Regards,

Rosty.
