Hi lulu,

Welcome to the Tomcoyote forum! Sorry for the delaly on getting a reply. Malware can change with the amount of time that has past since you posted this HJT.
Please post a new HJT log for me to check. I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.
HijackThis logs can take some time to research, so please be patient with me. I know that you need
your computer working as quickly as possible, and I will work hard to help see that happens.
.

In order to help me help you, please observe the following while we work:
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't continue, we don't want to start all over again!
  • Understand that cleaning your computer can sometimes take multiple passes/posts,
and it's important to follow the steps as listed including re-running scans as listed
  • Please reply to this thread, do not start another. Tell what problem your are having.

If you can do those three things, everything should go smoothly
Hi Tim

Thanks for answering.

I will be asking questions as we go. I have been using a computer for 1 1/2

yrs and can safely say that I am not computer-gifted.

This is the problem:

I have windows media player. I go to http://uncleshag.podomatic.com/ to

download the podcasts. When I do this, the windows media player used to

automatically come up. Last week instead of the player coming up, I got the

square prompt asking me if I want to open, save or cancel the file.

The only thing that I remember being different right around this time was a

psp site that I go to installed a new jukebox on their site. I kept getting

a prompt asking if I wanted it and I said no. It kept asking me everytime I

changed pages over there so I went to options on the prompt and clicked "do

not ask me anymore". Or something similar. The web master of that site tells

me that her jukebox would have nothing to do with my computer.

I don't go to questionable web sites. The only other new web sites I had been going to a couple of weeks prior to this are css tutoring sites.

Below is the current log.

Hi Tim I forgot to add something that might be the problem. When I close down my computer a prompt comes up. It's one of those prompts where the computer tells you that it's closing a program and if I elect to close it right away I might lose info. This particular one is only on the screen a split second before it disappears. The only part of it I'm able to catch before it disappears is "sw file".
Hi lulu,

Ok I need you to make sure when you copy and paste from notepad to click on format at top and Uncheck word wrap it makes it hard to read logs. thanks
I do not see any virus protection or firewall running. Do you have any installed.
Some information below
  • Use an Anti Virus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. See this link for a listing of some on line & their stand-alone anti virus programs Click on link:
Computer Safety On line - Anti-Virus
  • Update your Anti Virus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For an article on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
Computer Safety On line - Software Firewalls
——————————————————————————————————
Please do the following.

[external image: Posted Image]

5. Click on the Save list… button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save list button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here on your next reply. Note: please uncheck word wrap under format in notepad
——————————————————————————————————————————————————

Good Morning Tim I installed a Sunbelt Kerio Personal Firewall this morning and a prompt came up saying that to protect my computer the windows xp firewall was blocking some components of the sunbelt program. It asked if I wanted those parts unblocked and I clicked yes. Was this the right thing to do. I figured it was since the reference page here for the firewall info said the windows fire wall wasn't as strong. Just want to double check with you so I don't make things worse.
Hi lulu,

You must install a virus program immediately your computer is not secuirty safe at all.
You can only run one virus program at a time running two or more with cause conflicts in programs and computer instablity.

Here are two you can choose from
link to one AVG Anti-Virus (free for personal use only available)
http://www.grisoft.com/

link to second avast! antivirus home edition (free for personal use only)
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

Anti-virus programs take up an enormous amount of your computer's resources when they are actively scanning your computer. Having two anti-virus programs running at the same time can cause your computer to run very slow, become unstable and even, in rare cases, crash. Which leaves you open to infection.

If you choose to install more than one antivirus program on your computer, then only one of them should be active in memory at a time.

There are basically two types of these programs:
On-Access and On-Demand

On-Access Scanners
As the name implies, it runs in the background all the time the PC is turned on and running. The main function of an on-access scanner is to monitor activity on your machine.

On-Demand Scanners
As the name implies, are scanners that only run when you ask them to.
Such as:
Online Scans and scanners that run on your machine but are not actively scanning your machine.

Although Incredimail is considered to be a legitimate program that people install intentionally, please read this information regarding Incredimail very carefully and use you best judgment in deciding if you want to keep this program on your computer or not.
The use of Incredimail opens your system to attacks, and in the User Agreement, claims permanent ownership of everything sent through their mail service. See the full article. I read this article and noticed the date was 10/10/02 so just in case the information had changed since then and was no longer a concern, I downloaded Incredimail from Incredimail's site. Before installing, I read the EULA and there it was still. It may be worthwhile to fix it with HijackThis. Uninstall using Control Panel>Add/ Remove Programs. This is the item to fix in HijackThis:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IncrediMail] C:\INCRED~1\bin\IncrediMail.exe /c

————————————————————————————————————————–

FlashGet is known to bundle Cydoor. It's strongly recommended that this program be removed via Add/Remove Programs.

Add/Remove Programs
  • Click Start
  • Go to Control Panel
  • Go to Add/Remove Programs
  • Find and click Remove for the following:

    FlashGet
You will need to reboot to finish uninstall
—————————————————————————————————–

To enable the viewing of Hidden files follow these steps:
  • Close all programs so that you are at your desktop.
  • Double-click on the My Computer icon (or click Start, then select My Computer)
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • After the new window appears select the View tab.
  • Put a checkmark in the checkbox labeled Display the contents of system folders.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders section select the radio button labeled Show hidden files and folders.
  • Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide file extensions for known file types.
  • Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide protected operating system files.
  • Press the Apply button and then the OK button and shutdown My Computer.
Now your computer is configured to show all hidden files.
