MOST IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and IE to get all the Latest Security Patches to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the internet. Please go to
Microsoft Windows and Internet Explorer Updates to get the critical updates.

If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the cirtical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update


After the above:

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

I cannot install updates…. this is a "used computer" that i received from a friend. When i try to navigate to a purchase or login page on most sites, i get the cannot open etc screen in ie

It very well may be that with IE and Windows outdated, you won't be able to open some sites.
You can try this but you really need to purchase your own copy of windows. Not being able to get security updates from windows you're wasting my time and yours trying to get the PC cleaned.

Try this:
If you download and double click on this small app, it will restore all the default search fuctions for IE.

Save it to your desktop.

Right click on the file IEFIX.reg and select Merge.
