Heres the short version of my problem…I have Mcaffee virus scanner and firewall, I also have Asquared malware scanner, and i have adaware as well. Well since 2 days ago, Mcaffee has been popping up "PUP" of 2 different kinds. 1 is a dialer.gen and the other is a .exe from my registry it looks like.

I know I need your services to clean my system, and then once we have it cleaned, can you help me with what software is best to use to prevent this kind of problem in the future.

Here is the log I just got no more then 2 min. ago. I did have the PUP notice and "deleted it" but it always ends up coming back, so I know i have something nasty.

Also please note, when I was trying to get a trojan remover from a site, www.simtel.com, my IE crashed the min the page loaded. Im assuming I got a smart trojan.

Hello and Welcome to the forum.

I suggest you do this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

1.Click Start > Settings > Control Panel.
2.Next, open Add/Remove Programs and remove if listed:
UltimateBuddy

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UpdReg] C:\WINDOWS\UpdReg.EXE
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [tgcmd] "C:\Program Files\Support.com\bin\tgcmd.exe" /server /startmonitor /deaf

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Delete these Folders if listed:
C:\Program Files\UltimateBuddy

Delete these Files if listed:
C:\Program Files\UltimateBuddy\UltimateBuddy.exe

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

My computer loaded up slowly, but this time(first time in 2 days) when i booted, Mcafee didnt give me an error of a severe program was detected when I had to log into to windows. It did however give me the PUP for RPCnetp.exe like it has been for days.

Besides that all seems to be as per the norm. Crow did say my boot up would be slow due to alot of things in my start up, I know i have to work on that.

Anyway heres the new log, thanks again, you guys are awesome.

PS. Ultimate Buddy, removed itself from the HJT list, and from my files and etc. I dont know if that makes any difference to you or not, but I wanted to let you know that.

Go to start > run and copy/paste next commands in the field:

sc delete Rpcnetp Hit enter

Do the same for this one:
Rpcnet

Go to Start > Run and type in Services.msc then click OK

Click the Extended tab.

Scroll down until you find Rpcnetp
and Rpcnet

Click once on the service to highlight it.

Click Stop

Right-Click on the service.

Click on 'Properties'

Select the 'General' tab

Click the Arrow-down tab on the right-hand side on the 'Start-up Type' box

From the drop-down menu, click on 'Disabled'

Click the 'Apply' tab, then click 'OK'

The service is now stopped and disabled.

Click Start-> Run and type cmd in the Open: line. Click OK.
* Type or paste in the following in bold: sc delete Rpcnetp
* Hit Enter
* Type: Exit
* Hit Enter
Same for Rpcnet

Locate and delete this file:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\Rpcnetp.exe

Run hijackthis and click the scan button, when it has finished scanning then put a tick against the following, close all other browsers and windows and click 'fix checked'

I got as far as the cmd and typing in "sc delete RPC", then I get an error:

[SC] Open service failed 1060:

The specified service does not exist as an installed service

I have not completed the rest of the steps till you can clear up what to do.

I just did my reboot, since HJT came up with no RPC at all, and got the error, b4 I even logged into windows that Mcafee found a "suspect file". There was no PUP this time on reboot, but it doesnt mean that when I shutdown and restart later it wont come up.

I just did a new HJT since the reboot(going to restart) and RPC is back in the HTJ log….here it is.

I await further instructions.

Please read this again. The 2 services you want to kill are: Rpcnetp and Rpcnet

Go to start > run and copy/paste next commands in the field:

sc delete Rpcnetp Hit enter

Do the same for this one:
Rpcnet

Go to Start > Run and type in Services.msc then click OK

Click the Extended tab.

Scroll down until you find Rpcnetp
and Rpcnet

Click once on the service to highlight it.

Click Stop

Right-Click on the service.

Click on 'Properties'

Select the 'General' tab

Click the Arrow-down tab on the right-hand side on the 'Start-up Type' box

From the drop-down menu, click on 'Disabled'

Click the 'Apply' tab, then click 'OK'

The service is now stopped and disabled.

Click Start-> Run and type cmd in the Open: line. Click OK.
* Type or paste in the following in bold: sc delete Rpcnetp
* Hit Enter
* Type: Exit
* Hit Enter
Same for Rpcnet

Locate and delete this file:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\Rpcnetp.exe

Run hijackthis and click the scan button, when it has finished scanning then put a tick against the following, close all other browsers and windows and click 'fix checked'

Things worked out smoother this time, but I still ran into problems. When i went to services, I only had 3, not 4 RPCs, so I did the one that applied, the 2 are left are "locator" and the reg. one with nothing after it. Also when I stopped the one that was there, it vanished off the list, It looked like it was diasbled since last night when I tried to do the work you gave me, but I cant be 100% sure.

Then when I went to cmd, and did the sc commands, I got the 1060 errors again. This time when I went to windows/system32 I did encounter 2 RPC files and deleted the one you asked me to.

As per your instructions, I ran HJT to fix the RPCs, but they did not come up in the list. Here is the current HJT log, I have no rebooted since I did the tasks, since you didnt tell me to.

I noticed that if i dont log in fast enough into windows when it first boots up that thats when i get the "suspect file" pop up from mcafee.

The comp booted up ok as of now. I did a simple restart….heres the log from HJT

Step 1:
Click Start>Run and type in: services.msc
-Click OK
-In the Services window find: Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Net (Rpcnet)
-Select/highlight and right click the entry, and choose: Properties
-On the General tab, under Service Status click the Stop button
-Beside: Startup Type, in the drop menu, select: Disabled
-Click Apply, then OK

Do not select the following Services, they are legit!!
Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Locator

Step 2:
Next, open HijackThis
Click on: Config
Click on: Misc Tools
Click on: Delete an NT Service
In the prompt: Delete an NT Service copy/paste: Rpcnet
Press: Enter
Press: OK

If entering: Rpcnet does not work, then copy/paste: Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Net (Rpcnet)

Step 3:
Run a HijackThis Scan.
Check box and select Fix Checked on the following:

O23 - Service: Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Net (Rpcnet) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\rpcnet.exe

Step 4:
Reboot to Safe Mode
Restart your computer in Safe Mode.

Press F8 after the Power-On Self Test (POST) is done. If the Windows Advanced Options Menu does not appear, try restarting and then pressing F8 several times after the POST screen.
Choose the Safe Mode option from the Windows Advanced Options Menu then press Enter.
This can take several miniutes to load.

Step 5:
Search for, and if found, delete the following file (bold):
C:\WINDOWS\system32\rpcnet.exe

Step 6:
Reboot normal and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

Well heres what i did, and what happened…

I followed ur steps the first time, and when i got into the safe mode part, I might have deleted the wrong one(rpcnetp.exe) so when i rebooted after that i checked to see if it came up and came back on the HD, and it did(i did that one cause it had a capital R, and it was out of place compared to the other files, and i didnt expect to find 2 RPC exe's there)

So then i went through the steps again, and deleted the other one, and now heres the log, I wont shut down as fast as usual tonight, till i know wether or not my comp is ok, or if i have to get a new rpcnetp.exe, but theres 2 in the recycle bin, and 1 in system32, the one in system32 is 3kb smaller then the 2 in the recycling bin. please let me know if this is a problem, and if so what to do.

My comp booted up faster then usual, but doesnt seem to have the same "desktop" effects as b4 i went into safe mode, the start menu is still in "safe mode" and the start bar looks like it is, too, but the rest of the comp seems to be running normal cept for actual windows which has the safe mode "close minimize and cascade" small boxes in the top right hand corner, and it seems to have booted up a bit faster, but I cant be 100% sure.

Please go to http://virusscan.jotti.org , click on Browse, and upload the following file for analysis:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\Rpcnetp.exe

Then click Submit. Allow the file to be scanned, and then please copy and paste the results here for me to see.
