Thanks for any help, my IE6 goes all over the place.
Hi,

• You will need to print or copy these instructions for reference since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/lonny/Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

• Once the desktop loads, post back with the text that will open (report.txt) and a new Hijackthis log.
Fixwareout ver 1.003

My computer seems to be running much better. No more hijacked searches. Before I implemented your repairs, Spybot and Ad-aware would both freeze during scans. I will try them and let you know how they do.
Okay. While you are doing that, I'd like you to do the following.

• Start HijackThis, click System Scan Only and place a checkmark next to the following items:
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/…//www.yahoo.com

Close ALL browsers and open windows/programs except HijackThis and click 'Fix Checked'. Then exit HijackThis.

Reboot your computer.

• Please download, install, and update ewido anti-spyware.
  • Load Ewido and then click the Update tab at the top. Under Manual Update click Start update.
  • After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
  • Then click on the Scanner tab at the top. Click the "Settings" tab and then change the recommended action to Quarantine and click Automatically generate report after every scan
  • Click back to the "Scan" tab and then click on Complete System Scan. This scan can take quite a while to run, so be prepared.
  • Ewido will list any infections found on the left hand side. When the scan has finished, it will automatically set the recommended action. Click the Apply all actions button. Ewido will display "All actions have been applied" on the right hand side.
  • Click on Save Report-, then "Save Report As". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again (like on the Desktop).
  • Close Ewido and reboot!!
• Post back with the results of the ewido scan and a new HijackThis log.

Hi,

Your log looks clean.

• Empty your Quarantine folder in ewido by doing the following:
- Open ewido
- Click "Infections" icon at the top
- Click the "Quarantine" tab
- Click "Select All" > then click "Remove finally"
- exit ewido.

• You have an outdated version of Java which, because of security reasons, needs to be updated. To update Java:
- Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 8 and save it to your Desktop.
- Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
- Click the "Download" button to the right.
- Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
- The page will refresh.
- Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
- Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
- Go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
- Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name. It should have the [external image: Posted Image] icon next to it.
- Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
- Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
- Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
- Then from your Desktop, double-click on jre-1_5_0_08-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.

• Please set your system to hide system files.
- Click Start.
- Open My Computer.
- Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
- Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, uncheck Show hidden files and folders.
- Check: Hide file extensions for known file types
- Check the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
- Click Yes to confirm.
- Click OK.

• You're allowing way too many tracking cookies, so you need to change your settings for cookies.
In Firefox, click Tools -> Options - Privacy tab -> Cookies tab
- Tick "Allow sites to set Cookies"
- Tick "for the originating site only"
- Do not tick "unless I have removed cookies from this site"
- In "Keep Cookies" - select either "ask me every time" or "until I close Firefox" (whichever you prefer)
- Click OK
- When you do accept cookies, choose the option "Session Only"
In Internet Explorer, click Tools -> Internet Explorer -> Privacy tab
- Tick "Override automatic cookie handling"
- Under "First-party Cookies" - tick "Prompt"
- Under "Third-party Cookies - tick "Block"
- Click OK and Apply
Rule of thumb: Don't accept cookies for every site - be selective. You can deny most cookies, and you will be blocked from most of the tracking cookies.

• Also, you can fix these optional entries in HijackThis:
Start HijackThis, click System Scan Only and place a checkmark next to the following items:
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://us8.hpwis.com/
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://srch-us8.hpwis.com/
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://g.msn.com/0SEENUS/SAOS10
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://srch-us8.hpwis.com/
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = http://us8.hpwis.com/
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background

- Close ALL browsers and open windows/programs except HijackThis and click 'Fix Checked'.
- Then exit HijackThis.
- Reboot your computer.

• If you have not done so, please empty your Recycle Bin.

• Create a new Restore Point:
- Go to Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Restore.
- When the utility opens, select "Create a new restore point" and click Next
- Name the restore point - something like "After infection cleaned" or "After cleaning"
- Click Create.

• Delete the old Restore Points:
- Go to Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Disk Cleanup. Click Ok.
- Click the "More Options" tab.
- Where it states "System Restore" - click Clean up.
- All of the old Restore Points will be deleted EXCEPT for the one you just created.

Reboot your computer!

• To keep this clean in the future, I would suggest the following things:

• Install Spywareblaster. SpywareBlaster doesn't scan and clean for so-called spyware but prevents it from being installed in the first place. It blocks the popular spyware ActiveX controls and also prevents the installation of any of them via a webpage. Update it periodically.

• Download ATF Cleaner by Atribune and save to your desktop.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
This is a good program for periodically cleaning your system. Instructions are here

* Avoid illegal sites because that's where most malware is present.
* Don't click on links inside pop-ups. If you should get them, use ALT + F4 to close them.
* Don't click on links in spam messages claiming to offer anti-spyware software because most of these so-called removers ARE spyware.
* Download free software only from sites you know and trust because a lot of free software can bundle other software, including spyware.

• Let your anti-spyware scanner(s) scan frequently and don't forget to update before scanning.

• I suggest you perform an online virus-scan once in a while (Housecall and/or Bitdefender) because what one virus-scanner can't find, another one maybe can.
Also, make sure that your virus-scanner, the one that is already installed on your system, is always up to date!

• Make sure your Windows has the latest updates by going here.

• Consider switching to Mozilla Firefox.
This browser is considered to be far more secure than Internet Explorer and offers improved pop-up blocking. If you do decide to install Firefox, please read Switching from IE to Firefox.

• More information on how to prevent malware can be found at So how did I get infected in the first place? (by Tony Klein) and Malware Prevention: Prevent Re-infection.
