Welcome to the forum, sorry for the delay, but this forum gets quite busy.

Your version of HJT is very outdated and not showing us the whole picture. Use the links in my signature at the bottom of this post and download and install version 1.99.1. Keep the default settings, it will install in C:\Program Files\Hijackthis.

Please download ComboFix from either of these two locations

BleepingComputerComboFix
TechSupportForumComboFix
  • Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

Post the log from
Combofix and a new HJT log please.

Ken :D
Thanks for your help.

Thanks for the new HJT log, its right where we want it to be. You can go to where you had the old version and delete the whole folder.

You have an array of infections on this system, Combofix did a good job and got rid of about 75% of it, still more to do on your end.

This is what we are going to do now. You should print this out because we will be offline for most of the fix.

Download and install the 30 day trial of Ewido Anti Spyware to your desktop.
  • Once you have downloaded Ewido Anti-Spyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
  • Once the setup is complete you will need run Ewido and update the definition files.
  • On the main screen select the icon Update then select the Update now link.
  • Next select the Start Update button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the Scanner icon at the top of the screen, then select the Settings tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on Recommended actions and then select Quarantine <– Dont forget this
  • Under Reports
  • Select Automatically generate report after every scan
  • Un-Select Only if threats were found
  • Close Ewido Anti-Spyware <– Do not run the scan yet.

Download Pocket Killbox to your desktop, unzip it to a folder that you can find

Open HJT Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows, check these and click on Fix Checked

Its just a copy and paste thing, use your mouse to highlight all the contents inside the quote box, when its all highlighted, you can right click on it and select copy or press Ctrl and C, it will do the same thing, then all those files with the complete path will be on your wndows clipboard, when you open Killbox and go to File> Paste from Clipboard, all those files with now be in Killbox Highlight all off them including the path, you can highlight and copy them here if its easier. Ken,

I have now followed all your points.
At the point of 'apply all actions' in the ewido anti spyware run,
i left the computer running for a few hours while this took place.
when i returned to the computer there was a message saying

No reports available

All appears to be running well at this end

this is the new HJT log.

Log looks soooo much better, but lets run this free online virus scanner from Panda, I need to see the report along with a new HJT log.

Panda ActiveScan <<
Ken, I have been running the panda scan for a few hours now and it appears it will take some time to complete a scan of the computer. aftern scanning over 280,000 files the results so far are Detected Disinfected Virus 0 0 Spyware 66 0 Hacking Tools and potentially unwanted tools 8 0 Dialers 3 0 Security Risks 0 0 Suspicious files 0 0 Disinfection advice has been offered should i contiue with the scan? Also, i am having problems with e-mail using incredimail my computer receives e-mails no problem however i cannot send e-mails any advice? thanks Delbhoy
Delbhoy,

Don't know why but on some systems Panda takes awhile and others the scan goes real quick. I would say at this point that since your log is fine, its your call to run it.

I know this does not sound encouraging, but Malware is short for Malicious ware and the low life that write this garbage are lousy programers and there code sometimes is not the best. Even after some systems are clean, there is always the chance of some damage.

Here are a few more online scanners to try.

Bitdefender << eTrust <<<'Cure' whatever is found, then delete if unsuccessful
Housecall <<

A couple of things to try.
  • Click Start>Run
  • Type in sfc /scannow, hit Enter.
  • Note: there is a space between sfc and /scannow
  • This should replace any corrupted/missing system files and will hopefully fix things.
You may need your XP disc in your CD drive for this.

Close any instance of Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer.
  • Go to Start> Control Panel> Internet Options . You shoud be on the General Tab
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Files > and offline content as well
  • Then go to the Programs Tab and Reset Web Settings

How did I get infected in the first place ? Read these links and find out how to prevent getting infected again.

I will leave this thread open for a week or so if you decide to run Panda or one of the others.
