I'm wondering if a kind reader here might please have a look at my Hijaak this log. I am running Windows XP on a IBM R50e laptop. There seem to be many processes running on my PC, and I'm wondering how many are actually necessary. Also, despite the fact that I have virus software and AdAware installed – I am concerned about Trojans/Viruses/Spyware.

I'd appreciate any feedback.

[COMMENTS: I'm not sure what the "Neoteris Setup" is doing here – is it related to my wireless network?
Also, I used to use "PandaSoft" online free virus scanning software; I recently purchased Macafee through my University – can I delete the reference to Pandasoft? Is there anything else that I should be wary of? Thank you in advance! :D ]

FIRST:

You need to set WinXP to show all hidden and system
files.
Here is how:

* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View Tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK
================================
NEXT:
IMPORTANT
Spybot-Search&Destroy\TeaTimer.exe

While TeaTimer is an excellent tool for the prevention of spyware, it can sometimes prevent HijackThis from fixing certain things.
Please disable TeaTimer for now until you are clean. TeaTimer can be re-activated once your HijackThis log is clean.

* Open Spybot Search & Destroy.
* In the Mode menu click "Advanced mode" if not already selected.
* Choose "Yes" at the Warning prompt.
* Expand the "Tools" menu.
* Click "Resident".
* Uncheck the "Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of overall system settings) active." box.
* In the File menu click "Exit" to exit Spybot Search & Destroy.

Mschroe919,

First, let me thank you for your help. I am astounded by your willingness to take the time to help me with this, and you can be sure that I will be supporting this site, if it means that people like you will continue to help people like me!

I followed your directions, and pasted in below both the HJT and EWIDO logs. I do have some questions though:

1) What should I be aware of now, knowing that I have/had the syslog32 trojan? Should I file an alert with a credit company, in the event that personal info was disseminated from my PC? Should I do more than change all my passwords?

2)After running EWIDO and HJT (and using HJT to fix process[ O4…syslog32.exe ]), I looked for but could not find a file with the name syslog32.exe. I also searched the registry for any entries with syslog32 – but nothing came up.

3)Finally, in my search for syslog32.exe, I found file in my Windows\Temp directory called kspd32a.exe. According to what I found on Google, this is a Worm – but none of my software (Macafee or EWIDO) detected it. Also, when I try to delete it (in either normal or safe mode) I get a message that says that the file is being used by another process or user and that it cannot be deleted. When I look at the running processes, though, I don't see it. Should I or how can I get rid of this file? (Also note that I can't move the file out of the Temp directory –even in safe mode.

The log files follow. I presume that it's ok to reactivate Teatimer for now. Thank you again for your help – if you could answer my questions and have a look at the below, I will be grateful.

Hi neil4ad

C:\TEMPDL\HindiFonts\patch.exe/patch.exe -> Trojan.Agent.jh : Cleaned with backup (quarantined).

To kill the kspd32a.exe
Lets see if its a running process.
Click on Ctrl/Alt/Del
then click on processes and if its running click on end process.
Be carful and don't end process of anything else.
Then go back and delete it.
=======
If still won't go try this:
Download TheKillbox from here
http://www.atribune.org/downloads/KillBox.exe
Save to your Desktop and double click it to open it up. In the 'Enter Full Path and Filename to Delete' box, copy and paste the entry as where you have it.clicking 'Find and Kill This File' after each one:

C:\Windows\Temp directory called kspd32a.exe. I am not sure correct location, but you found it once and you can do it again.

Then reboot and a new hijackthis log please.

good luck mschroe919
Thanks again!

So I did the following:

I downloaded Killbox.exe, but I had to set it to "delete on reboot" for it to take care of kspd32a.exe

Here is the new Hijaak log:

Hi neil4ad,
Your doing great cleaning your PC. Pat yourself on the back.
One thing to consider is updating you XP with SP2, it has all the
safety issues needed to stay safe.

But for now to speed up the PC lets do this:

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.

Download Here:
http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1

This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NEXT:

Now this is optional:
You have a lot of programs running in the back ground on start up.

Next:
Hi UF-Supra,

Lets try something here to speed up your PC.

First:

Please download System Security Suite. here.

http://www.forums.security-central.us/showthread.php?t=318

Extract it from the zip file into a folder.

Run 3S under “Items To Clear” tab place a checkmark in all of them but the last.

Reboot and Rescan with HJT and post a new log here.

Also please describe how your computer behaves now.

There will be more to do when I see the next post. Some things to keep your PC clean

Your doing well
Good luck mschroe919
Thank you again Mschroe919!

I notice now that my PC is a little faster – the boot-up time has been reduced by at least 45 seconds, and there seem to be fewer reads off of the hard drive that are slowing things down. Below, please find the latest HJT log.

Hello neil4ad

Your pc is clean now

Now come some of the other important things,and suggestions to do as I promised early on, to help your PC stay clean.

First :
I am glad to see you are running a Anti Virus program, please keep it up to date.

NEXT:

Go back and re-hide your files:
Here is a way to do that:
Click start/ control panel/click on tools/folder options/view/ click on restore defaults.

NEXT:

(Now is the restore time:)

Here is how:

Lets reset system restore
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected. Please note you need Administrator Access to do clean the restore points.

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
NOTE: only do this ONCE, NOT on a regluar basis

NEXT:

Go to Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

ALSO:

. Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
2. Click once on the Security tab
3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
4. Click once on the Custom Level button.
1. Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
2. Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
3. Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
4. Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
5. Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
6. Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
7. When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
8. If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
5. Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Don't need to send a new log, just let me know how your PC is doing.
Also Please I only ask one thing….please
Please post back and let us know what you think about our forum, we are all volunteers and would like a little smile.

Good Luck mschroe919
Mschroe,
I need to reopen this topic. This morning, I noticed that there were many, long hard drive reads on my PC. I didn't think too much of it, as I thought that perhaps since I deleted the system restore points, that the PC was creating new ones. This evening, I happened to check the running processes, and I found that something had shut down my McAfee, and the EWIDO processes, and that there were several new processes running that I hadn't seen before. (like net.exe)

I didn't even have a chance yet to download Win XP sp2, or to install that firewall you were telling me about. Can you please help me once again? I've posted the Hijaak log below (having disabled teatimer.exe) . After I log off, I'll reboot in safe mode and run the EWIDO full system scan – basically, I'll repeat everything that you told me to do before. But if you would, please have alook:

Hi Mschroe,

I ran EWIDO – and it only found tracking cookies, all of which I deleted.

I notice that after running EWIDO, though, that the net.exe is not listed anymore as one of my processes. HOWEVER, I tried moving the file out of c:\windows\system32 – but somehow the PC created another version of the file, and it reappeared in the system32 folder (even though it is not running as a process)

I've posted in the new HIJACK and EWIDO logs below:

::Report end
Sorry to keep posting here, but I ultimately used system restore to get back to the point right after you suggested that my PC was clean. After that, I ran Windows Update to d/l all the critical updates, and I also downloaded the ZoneLab product (which I am unable to run, as it appears that I do not have enough RAM). I hope that this issue can be closed. Thanks again Mschroe
Hi neil4ad,
I am back and I wouldn't delete anything till told.
As in Net.exe
Recommendation for net.exe:
Should not be disabled, required for essential applications to work properly.

I looked over your log again and see nothing that represents a virus or malware.
There is quite a few thing running in the back ground on start up.
Lets try this:to help speed up your PC.

I asked you to do this before, but because I see so many thing starting I wish for you to do it again.

This will help you decide what you want to start up when turning on PC.

Please download System Security Suite. here.
http://www.forums.security-central.us/showthread.php?t=318
Extract it from the zip file into a folder.

Run 3S under “Items To Clear” tab place a checkmark in all of them but the last.
Post back as to how your doing now.

Don't need another log .
Good luck mschroe919
Thanks mschroe919, I didn't delete anything, and I ran the 3s system security software as you requested. I still have so many processes running, though, that I wonder if it's time for a process of elimination – I can use Spybot to termporarily disable the items like "realsched.exe" (in other words, items that I've looked up that I know are not essential) and see if that speeds things up. The system is running more quickly after I ran the 3s software, though. thanks again!
Hi neil4ad

There is always the last trick:
Lets try this go to start/Run/in the comand (open) box type in msconfig and click ok. When ulility box opens go to top and click on the start up box.
There youn will see whats running at start up, disabling any does not delete them just stop them.
You can take down the the .exe file and google it, this will tell you if needed at start up.
then disable the ones not needed. you must restar after disabling anythong.
Good luck mschroe919
