Hi, new member here.
I recently had my computer attacked by a program, plenty of adware and such.
I got rid of everything i can, but i'm still getting the WinAntiVirus2006 popups. They're not browser ads, they're the ones that disguise themselves as Windows dialog boxes. There's also a one called DriveCleaner popping up in the same manner. And every once in a while the winantivirus will try to download itself through Netscape, but i have download manager ask before anything downloads. That's about it, computer has been starting up at maybe half the speed it was before the attack.

Sorry, thought i should add one more thing. I've been using SpyCatcher to get rid of everything i can, and as you probably know it comes up with alot of suspicious files on it's scan. I've quarantined a good amount of files, some of which i should have allowed. I research files before i quarantine them as much as possible, but some just don't come up with anything through google. From there i check when the files were created and other information that might help me figure out whether it was installed with all the spyware i encountered. Anyways i may have quarantined files that shouldn't be quarantined, if you want i can allow them to run, and do another Hijackthis! scan.

Hi, thanks for responding. I went ahead and took some of the questionable files i talked about out of quarantine because my hijackthis log was reading like 6 (file missing) things at the end. So i want to make sure i don't delete the wrong things, you know.

Right now the comp is just WinAntiVirus and DriveCleaner dialog box popups, they also both try to download every once and awhile, and when that's not happening about every 5 minutes i hear a click, and then a few bloop-bloop noises. That's about it.

First thing we need to do is get you a free anti-virus program :thumbup:

Click the HERE and Save, Install, Update and run a full scan.


Empty Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.

It still has the dialog box popups. The scan brought up 9 trojans or trojan generators, it quarantined them but for some reason one was still in the list when it had me restart.

I suggest you do this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.


Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.


Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

download ewido anti-spyware from HERE and save that file to your
desktop.
This is a 30 day trial of the program
  • Once you have downloaded ewido anti-spyware, locate the icon on the desktop
    and double-click it to launch the set up program.
  • Once the setup is complete you will need run ewido and update the definition
    files.
  • On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "
    Update now    " link.
    • Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a
      progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of
    the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then
    select ""Quarantine".".
  • Under "Reports"
    • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
    • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
Close ewido anti-spyware, Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.
  • Reboot your computer into SafeMode. You can do this by restarting
    your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears.

    Use your up arrow key to highlight SafeMode then hit enter.
    IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or
    programs while ewido is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:
  • Lauch ewido-anti-spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
  • Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab
    then click on "Complete System Scan".
  • ewido will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little
    time.
    Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all
    actions    "
  • Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
  • Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the
    screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where
    you saved that file, this is important).
  • Close ewido and reboot your system back into Normal Mode and post the
    results of the ewido report scan along with a new HijackThis log.

As of right now i haven't had any dialog popups or noise yet, my desktop took extremely long to load, but i suspect that's because we cleared everything using the ATF cleaner. If anything changes i'll post back here, most likely everything is fine if it doesn't make noise within the next 5-10 minutes, because it was doing that at what seemed to be set intervals. I think Ewido in safe mode did the trick though.

I know where i'm going from now on whenever i have computer problems!

With Ewido 4, if you click on the Infections icon, then it will show you all the items in Quarrantine and you can remove them that way. Just click Select All (if all of the items in quarrantine need removing) then Remove Finally Log is looking pretty good. Let's give it some time and see how it goes :thumbup: We're not finished yet though.

You need to create a new Clean restore point.

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn it back on.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Remove the Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.





If you dont have any programs like these, I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Looks like i'm good to go, still no sign of any problems. Thanks for all your help! And i'll make sure i run a firewall and monitoring program this time, although it was my own decision to open the file when i knew the risk.
