Hi I'm Angelfire777 and it'll be my pleasure to assist you in your problem. Reasearching Hijackthis logs could take sometime so please, be patient while I research a fix for you. Also, I have to let experts check my fixes first before bringing them to you. Please observe these while we work: 1.) Please stick with this thread until we are finished, do not start a new topic here or start a new thread at other forums. Do not worry, We were trained to help and never give up until we get you all fixed up. 2.) Stop if you have questions!! Never proceed if something is unclear to you. We don't want to start all over again. 3.) Avoid downloading other applications or other anti-spyware programs unless you really need to. 4.) Lastly, please be patient and never lose hope. Sometimes, it will take us several tries and posts to get something done. Sit back tight, I'll be back for you!

close ALL browsers and windows/programs that are running, leave only hijackthis running then click "Fix Checked"
==========================
You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/lonny/Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, then make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish. The fix will begin; follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

At the end of the fix, you may need to restart your computer again.

Finally, please post a fresh HijackThis log, along with the contents of the logfile C:\fixwareout\report.txt
Hello Angelfire,

I followed your instructions, and things seem to be better now. It appears IE is no longer being hijacked. Previously, it was hijacked if I tried to go to http://www.tomcoyote.org, but now it behaves correctly. Thank you so much!

When I ran the scan in HijackThis, it did not show the O4 entry you listed. It had one for C:\WINDOWS\system32\dmqrs.exe, but I did not tick that one since it did not match your instructions. However, it looks like Fixwareout may have cleaned it up anyway, from the report.txt contents.

Here are the contents of my new hijackthis.log:

Again, thanks for your help!
We need to disable your Microsoft Windows Defender Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.
  • Open Microsoft Windows Defender. Click Start > Programs > Windows Defender
  • Click on Tools > General Settings
  • Under Real-time protection options, unselect the Turn on real-time protection check box
  • Click Save
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

Congratulations! Your log looks clean!

Now that you're clean, we need to erase all possible older infected files that may still be lurking on your system.

Download CCleaner from here to clean temp files from your computer.
  • Double click on the file to start the installation of the program.
  • Select your language and click OK, then next.
  • Read the license agreement and click I Agree.
  • Click next to use the default install location. Click Install then finish to complete installation.
  • Double click the CCleaner shortcut on the desktop to start the program.
  • On the "Windows" tab, under "Internet Explorer," uncheck "Cookies" if you do not want them deleted. (If deleted, you will likely need to reenter your passwords at all sites where a cookie is used to recognize you when you visit).
  • If you use either the Firefox or Mozilla browsers, the box to uncheck for "Cookies" is on the Applications tab, under Firefox/Mozilla.
  • Click on the "Options" icon at the left side of the window, then click on "Advanced."
deselect "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours."
  • Click on the "Cleaner" icon on the left side of the window, then click Run Cleaner to run the program.
  • Caution: It is not recommended that you use the "Issues" feature unless you are very familiar with the registry as it has been known to find legitimate items.
  • After CCleaner has completed its process, click Exit.

Hello Angelfire, I followed your instructions regarding CCleaner and System Restore. I will check out your suggestions for improving the security of my system. I am currently running McAfee VirusScan/Personal Firewall Plus and Windows Defender, but I'm open to trying other things that could help me avoid trouble. Thanks again for your help! I made a $25 donation to TomCoyote.org in appreciation of your efforts. Keep up the good work!
