Hi

I have been having trouble with numerous popups, slow computer processing and slow ie loading web pages. If I go to a web page, I'm always redirected to another, have to close that window and wait some more on my original page. I checked on the processes running while this is going on, and ie is using 98% of cpu. I'm running windows defender, and spybot - but they can't seem to clean the problem. I also have current norton antivirus and sigs, also ZoneAlarm.

Thank you for your help,
Nancy

Welcome to the forum :wavey:

Download VundoFix.exe to your desktop from here:

VundoFix.exe

Disable Microsoft Windows Defender:
We need to disable your Microsoft Windows Defender Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.
  • Open Microsoft Windows Defender. Click Start, Programs, Windows Defender
  • Click on Tools, General Settings.
  • Under Real-time protection options, unselect the Turn on real-time protection check box
  • Click Save
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\xxyyy.dll

Click Close Window, then Remove Vundo.

5. You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES.
6. Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
7. When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.
8. Turn your computer back on.

Post a new HijackThis! log, along with the contents of this file:

C:\vundofix.txt

into this thread.
:)
Here's the new log. I had to run Vundofix 2 times to remove files (ran 3rd time to make sure they were gone after reboot) When I ran the HIJACK again, the trusted ip ranges you told me to remove were still there, so I removed them again, rebooted and ran HIJACK again - this is the result of where system is after rebooting. Thanks for all your help, its very much appreciated.

Nancy :)

Just a little "tidying up" left.

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!

Run Hijack This!
Click "Do a systen scan only".
Then "check" the box to the left of these item(s):

O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {CE70731D-F28D-4D81-9D61-C8EE60378401} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\xxyyy.dll (file missing)

Then click "Fix checked" and close Hijack This!.

Reboot.

That should do it.

Things running OK for you now?

Securing Your PC After An Attack
Question - I looked up Vundo because I had no clue what I was infected with. What worries me is that I run Norton Scan, Defender every evening. I have Zone Alarm configured. Why was Vundo not detected by on e of these programs? How did Zone Alarm not stop access to the 'trusted ip's listed in hijack log? I looked at Zone alarm and I only have 1 ip address listed. How can I ensure I don't have any other "backdoors" open? I appreciate the advice - thanks, Nancy
Neither Norton nor Defender will remove Vundo.

It's installed via an active-x component (most of the time) from rogue websites.

"Harden" your browser settings here:

Jason's Toolbox

Lax browser settings can let rogue websites install things (and no clicking is required :o ).

Ummm… I'm really not familair with Zone Alarm's operation at all, so I can't be much help there…

Other things to avoid infection can be found here:

Thank you for choosing TomCoyote for your malware removal solutions.
