Hi! chris88 and welcome to the TomCoyote forums.
My name is Vino Rosso - if it helps, you can call me Vino for short. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a little time to research and, while I complete my training, all my recommended fixes will be checked by an expert.

Please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:
  • I will working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Finally, please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
I'll be back once I've had the chance to look through your log.
Thanks
Vino
Vino, Thanks for responding any help you can give me would be great this thing is really anoying. I will wait to hear from you thanks again Chris
Hi chris

Please read through the following and ask any questions for anything you're not sure of.

1 - Move HijackThis
The first thing is we need to move HijackThis into its own folder as we may need to clean out your temp folder later.

Either

Using Windows Explorer, create a new folder C:\HJT
Extract HijackThis.exe from the zip file to this new folder

OR

Download HijackThis Self-installer
This is the easiest way to install HijackThis to your computer. This is a complete installer that installs HijackThis to C:\Program Files\HijackThis
It makes an entry in the start menu and it allows you to have a shortcut on your desktop.

Do not try to fix anything yet! HijackThis shows lots of good files as well as bad.

2 - Show hidden files
Next we need to show hidden files and folders.
In Windows Explorer, select Tools > Folder Options > View
Set 'Hidden files and folders' to Show hidden files and folders
Untick Hide protected operating system files.
OK

3 - Remove Java
Go to Start » Control Panel » Add/Remove Programs
Search for all previous installed versions of Java. (J2SE Runtime Environment…. )
(It should have this icon next to it: [external image: Posted Image])
Click that entry and then click on the Change/Remove button and follow the instructions to remove Java

4 - Stop Processes
Using Task Manager, stop the following process
Press the Ctrl, Alt, and Delete keys together to open Task Manager
Click the 'Processes' tab
Scroll down, right-click and select 'End Process' on the following entry, OK any warnings.
mwsoemon.exe
Close Task Manager

5 - Remove Programs
Go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs
If present, remove the following programs:
** Take care when answering any questions posed by an uninstaller. Some questions may be worded to deceive you into keeping the program.
MyWebSearch
Need2Find

6 - Run HJT Scan
Run a scan with HijackThis and tick the following entries, if present:
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {00A6FAF6-072E-44cf-8957-5838F569A31D} - C:\Program Files\MyWebSearch\SrchAstt\1.bin\MWSSRCAS.DLL

Close all windows except HijackThis
Select Fix Checked in HijackThis.

Re-boot your PC.

7 - Update Java
Download and install the newest version of Java Runtime Environment, update 8, from >here<

8 - Upload File To Jotti
Please visit this link http://virusscan.jotti.org/
Click the Browse… button
Navigate to the following file ShowWnd.exe on your PC
Click Open
Please reply back with the results from Jotti.

9 - Check on status
After you have completed the above, please reboot and provide:
- a new HijackThis log
- the results from Jotti
- and let me know how your PC is behaving.

Remember, it's worth printing these instructions out before you start.

Hi Chris

Research shows that NSIS comes bundled with other software and also masquerades itself as a Firefox Update. In any case, it may take a few attempts to remove.

OK, let's try the following:

1 - Disable SpySweeper
Open it, click > Options over to the left then > Program Options > Uncheck "load at windows startup".
Over to the left click "shields" and uncheck all there.
Uncheck "home page shield".
Uncheck "automatically restore default without notification".

2 - Add/Remove Programs
Go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs
If present, remove the following program or any variation of the name:
** Take care when answering any questions posed by an uninstaller. Some questions may be worded to deceive you into keeping the program.
NSIS Media

If NSIS Media or any variation is not listed in Add/Remove Programs then
Use Windows Explorer and go to C:\Program Files\NSIS folder and look for a file called uninst.exe or uninstall.exe or uninstaller.exe
and double-click on the file to start the uninstall process.
If C:\Program Files\NSIS does not exist, try C:\Program Files\Common Files\NSIS folder and look for the same files.

3 - Delete suspect files
Using Start > Search > All Files and Folders
Enter nsis in the 'All or part of file name' box
Select C: in the 'Look in' dropdown box
Click Search Now
When the search is complete, right-click on each of the entries found and select delete

4 - Program Download
Please download to your Desktop ATF Cleaner by Atribune from >here<. This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only. It does not require any installation and uses minimal system resources. It is set up to clean IE, FireFox and Opera, and detects the browsers you have and greys out the other(s).

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Recommend UNCHECKING COOKIES if you rely on system remembered passwords.
Click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox browser
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All EXCEPT FIREFOX SAVED PASSWORDS
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

If you use Opera browser
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All EXCEPT COOKIES AND SAVED PASSWORDS
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your cookies and saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

5 - Check on status
After you have completed the above, please reboot and provide a new HijackThis log and let me know how your PC is behaving.

Remember, it's worth printing these instructions out before you start.

Good Luck
Vino
vino,
Here is my latest log. I think you got it! So far no pop-up. I also ran a spysweep and know sign of it there either. Do I need to go back an change anything back that you had me change? please let me know.
thanks Chris

Hi Chris

Great News! Hopefully the NSIS pop-ups will stay away and your log appears clean. Here's some valuable information that will help to keep it that way however please advise on any problems you may still have before proceding with the following:-

1 - Re-enable Spysweeper
You may have already done this:
Open it, click > Options over to the left then > Program Options > Tick "load at windows startup".
Over to the left click "shields" and tick all there.
Tick "home page shield".
Tick "automatically restore default without notification".

2 - All Clean
This is adapted from my general post for the 'All Clean' status.

Hide your System Files
These files are hidden to avoid accidental deletion so please follow these steps:

Click Start
Open My Computer
Select Tools > Folder Options > Select the View Tab
Uncheck Show hidden files and folders in the Hidden files and folders section
Select Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option
Click OK, OK

Reset your system restore points
This will remove any infected files that may have been backed up by Windows. A tutorial is available >here<.
Please note that you need Administrator privileges to do the following:

Turn off System Restore
Start > right-click My Computer and select Properties
Click the System Restore tab
Tick Turn off System Restore
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer

Turn ON System Restore
Start > Right-click on My Computer and select Properties
Click on the System Restore tab
Click on C: drive then Settings
Untick Turn off System Restore on this drive
OK, OK

Make Internet Explorer more secure
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Note: If you are using IE, you may want to consider changing Mozilla FireFox which offers not only better security but it also has more features than IE however remember that you still need to use IE for certain sites like Microsoft Updates.

Windows Updates
Ensure you are registered for Windows updates via Start > right-click on My Computer > Properties > Automatic Updates tab or visit the Microsoft Update site on a regular basis.

Anti-Virus
It is important that your computer has anti-virus software installed and it is updated at least on a weekly basis. Further information and programs can be found >here<

Firewall
Using a Firewall in its default configuration greatly reduces the risk of your computer being hacked. Further information and programs can be found >here<

Hosts File
For added protection you may also like to add a host file, for more information regarding host files read >here<

Anti-Malware Programs (all free)
Next, if they're not already present, I would recommend the download and installation of some or all of the following programs, and the updating of them on a regular basis:
  • Ad-Aware SE - This is a program that scans for and removes known spyware from your machine. >Tutorial<
  • Spybot Search & Destroy - Spybot is a tool like Ad-Aware SE whereas it seeks out and removes known spyware from your machine. >Tutorial<
These two tools (Ad-Aware & Spybot) are perfect complements to each other as one will most always find something the other missed.
  • Spyware Blaster - By altering your registry, this program stops harmful sites from installing things like ActiveX Controls on your machine.
  • IE_Spyad - Works by placing known "bad" sites into your Internet Explorer "Restricted Zones" prohibiting them from doing potentially problematic things to your computer.
Many Thanks and Safe Computing
