You are running HijackThis from its zipped archive; please create a new folder like C:\HJT for it and unzip the program into it. It is very important you do this before anything else! Please do not have hijacthis in a temporary folder either.

C:\DOCUME~1\Sue\LOCALS~1\Temp\Temporary Directory 1 for hijackthis[1].zip\HijackThis.exe

The Ewido program’s detection rate is excellent. After the Trial has expired, the auto updates and real time protection stop but you can still update it manually and run scans anytime you want.

First download ewido anti-spyware from HERE and save that file to your
desktop.
This is a 30 day trial of the program
  • Once you have downloaded ewido anti-spyware, locate the icon on the desktop
    and double-click it to launch the set up program.
  • Once the setup is complete you will need run ewido and update the definition
    files.
  • On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "
    Update now    " link.
    • Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a
      progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of
    the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then
    select "Quarantine".
  • Under "Reports"
    • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
    • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
Close ewido anti-spyware, Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.
  • Reboot your computer into SafeMode. You can do this by restarting
    your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears.

    Use your up arrow key to highlight SafeMode then hit enter.
    IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or
    programs while ewido is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:
  • Lauch ewido-anti-spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
  • Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab
    then click on "Complete System Scan".
  • ewido will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little
    time.
    Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all
    actions    "
  • Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
  • Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the
    screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where
    you saved that file, this is important).
  • Close ewido and reboot your system back into Normal Mode and post the
    results of the ewido report scan.
Scan with HijackThis. Place a check against each of the following:

Hello suebac,

Let's update your Java. How is your computer running now?

Do you have a firewall installed? Is there one with the Norton antivirus or are you relying on Windows XP firewall?


Updating Java
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 8.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-1_5_0_08-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.
Scan with HijackThis. Place a check against each of the following:
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {0BF43445-2F28-4351-9252-17FE6E806AA0} - (no file)
Close all windows or browsers except for Hijackthis. Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

You should only have one firewall application running so I wanted to make sure that you did not have one with the Norton before I instructed you to install one. In the tutorial below, you can scroll down and see some firewalls that are available for personal use without charge. These firewall applications are better than just relying on the Windows XP firewall.

I have installed Zone Alarm as my new firewall. Do I have to shut off the Windows firewall or should I just leave that as is?

Also, I have run another Hijack This Log and it is below.

Lastly and most importantly I want to thank you again for all your help. The information you have sent me has not only been very helpful but interesting and informative as well. I can describe myself as somewhat knowledgeable about computers but would love to learn more about how they actually work and things I should be doing to keep mine running well. For example I always heard about firewalls but never really understood what they were. After reading what you sent I was thrilled to finally understand what they are , their purpose, and how important they can be. Prior, I only knew they existed. If there are any books or any other informative sites that I could learn more about my computer and how to maintain please forward them to me.

Hi suebac,

Let's first check to see if the Windows firewall is off.
1. Click Start, click Run, type Firewall.cpl, and then click OK.
2. On the General tab, what do you see?

Is the Off (not recommended) selected?

Yes, it is off! Anything else I need to do? My computer is running much better now although it always sounds like something else is running in the background. But there are still times it just won't move at all (though much less often than before). It also sounds like something is running in the background. I constantly hear the "fan" sound although I'm not sure if its the fan or something else. Please advise. Thank you again!

Please ignore the last post.

Please note this is a new results page. I recalled that during testing I was receiving an error notice stating that some components of Norton Anvirus (which I removed) were erroneously detecting the "Sockets de Troij" tojan. Therefore I shut down my antivirus and reran the scan. Following are the new results:

I always clean out temporary files, etc. before running the Defragmenter.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.

This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser
  • Click Firefox at the top and choose:Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click
  • No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browser
  • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • NOTE:If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

To open Disk Defragmenter, click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Disk Defragmenter.
