Hi Troubled Noob:

Please print, or copy and paste this text into a Notepad file and place it on your desktop, to review as you work. Please proceed with this fix in the order provided below.

Please download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Right click the SDFix.zip folder and choose Extract All to extract it to its own folder on the Desktop. Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services or Registry Entries found then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt.
  • Finally copy and paste the contents of the results file Report.txt back onto the forum with a new HijackThis log, after finishing all below.
Next:
Close all windows and browsers, leaving only HijackThis running.

Place a check beside each of these entries listed below, if still present.

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.haohao1.com
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://www.haohao1.com

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Please run Hijack This again. Scan and copy the log, then post it into this topic, along with the Report.txt. from SDFix

It's time for that Dutch Uncle talk now.

Your PC does not have even the most basic protection that is absolutely essential for any PC that is being used on the Internet. You cannot continue to expose yourself to every Virus, Trojan Horse and worse, without at least a firewall and an onboard Anti-Virus and that is only the most basic protection that you must have.

Below you will find a link to Zone Alarm, which has a good free firewall for personal use, another for kerio (free for personal use) and a link to sygate. Note that it is not recommended to run two firewalls simultaneously, not even along with the new Microsoft firewall, which is not recommended, so download and install only one of these firewalls..
http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/cata…sku_list_za.jsp
http://www.kerio.com/us/kpf_home.html
http://smb.sygate.com/products/spf_pro.htm

Then:
To disable the XP firewall: Control Panel > Internet Options > Connections > Settings > Properties > Advanced…. Remove the check mark from the "Internet Connection Firewall" box and click "OK." Now, install your new firewall, without any further delay and certainly before going onto the internet.

Here is a link for a free AVG ANTI-VIRUS: Download and install,

http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/1/lng/us/tpl/v5

That is only the beginning.

It is difficult to say which you should do first, but we have to start somewhere.

Your Hijack This logfile looks to be clean.
If there are no problems, please be sure to use the link to see TonyKlein's good advice (below). Those Protection programs, offered free at his site, are some of the best available and you really need to download and install all of them, without further delay.

One of the best features of Windows XP is the System Restore option, however if Malware infects a computer with this operating system the Malware can be backed up in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is necessary after a virus removal.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(winXP)

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

* Clean your Cache and Cookies in IE:
Close all instances of Outlook Express and Internet Explorer
Go to Control Panel > Internet Options > General tab
Click the "Delete Cookies" button
Next to it, Click the "Delete Files" button
When prompted, place a check in: "Delete all offline content", click OK

* Clean your Cache and Cookies in Firefox (In case you also have Firefox installed):
Go to Tools > Options.
Click Privacy in the menu on the left side of the Options window.
Click the Clear button located to the right of each option (History, Cookies, Cache).
Click OK to close the Options window
Alternatively, you can clear all information stored while browsing by clicking Clear All.
A confirmation dialog box will be shown before clearing the information.

* Clean other Temporary files + Recycle bin

Go to start > run and type: cleanmgr and click ok.
Let it scan your system for files to remove.
Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
Press OK to remove them.

Also, see TonyKlein's good advice and highly recommended FREE PROTECTION PROGRAMS. A must for all PC users.

So how did I get infected in the first place?

And the following is absolutely critical.

Your PC is seriously lacking in the Microsoft Critical Updates. It is not advisable at this time to update to SP2, due to difficulties that could occur trying to do so.

However, I would advise to update to SP1 and secure all other critical updates. A machine that is so far behind with these updates is easy pickings for Internet criminals. You will continue to be plagued by problems, until you have done so and will be forced to return to sites such as this one, in order to continue to have your PC cleaned, on a very regular basis.

The following will link you to the Microsoft update site.
http://update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/…t.aspx?ln=en-us

Or here, to download SP1a
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details…;DisplayLang=en

Then, after sucessfully downloading SP1 it would be advisable to go back to Microsoft and get SP2 and all the critical updates that come with it.
Often it is necessary to return to MS for additional critical updates after having downloaded and installed some, as they may not all have been installed. Microsoft issues critical updates once monthly, on the second tuesday of the month, or shortly thereafter. Your PC should be set to automatically install these updates, or at least remind you to do so.
