Hi,
My computer was infected after my son clicked on a link in an im. I have run Spybot repeatedlyand at this point it doesn't find anything. I had to delete Ad-Aware because the new release of McAfee wouldn't install while it was on. Before I deleted it, it found lots of offending software and couldn't always clean everything up. I tried another malware scan but it could only be accessed from Internet Explorer, which when I opened it just went crazy with popups so I'm not able to do that. At this point, McAfee is detecting worm activity and blocking it but I'm not sure how to get rid of it. I would like to get to the point of using IE again because I teach computer use to seniors and that is the basis of the class. If you are able to help me, I would appreciate it. Thank you.

Welcome to the forum :wavey:

Download SDFix and save it to your desktop.

It may not be on the desktop when you boot in "safe mode".

If you use the same user you made the log from to download it to, it will be found here:

C:\Documents and Settings\Margaret\Desktop

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
  • In Safe Mode, right click the SDFix.zip folder and choose Extract All,
  • Open the extracted folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the script.
  • It will remove the Trojan Services then make some repairs to the registry and prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • Your system will take longer that normal to restart as the fixtool will be running and removing files.
  • When the desktop loads the Fixtool will complete the removal and display Finished, then press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Finally open the SDFix folder on your desktop and copy and paste the contents of the results file Report.txt back onto the forum with a new HijackThis log

Hi Micah_6:8,

Thanks for your help. I ran SDFix in safe mode and after the computer restarted as it was checking for malware, McAfee interrupted it. Even though I responded that it should allow it, it had already stopped and I had no idea how to restart it so I'm not sure it completed the job. Is it okay to just rerun it?

Then click "Fix checked", and close HijackThis!

Now, please go to:

Start –> Run

In the box type in services.msc then hit (or click OK)

In the Name column in the next screen look for:

Command Service

it.

In the dialogue box that pops up, check in the Path to executable box.

It should say: C:\WINDOWS\TWFyZ2FyZXQgTW9udG9yZQ\command.exe

That's how to be sure you have the right one.

Now, click Stop to stop that rogue process.

In the Startup type box, change it to Disabled.

Click Apply then OK

Close the services.msc window.

Reboot and post a new HijackThis! log into this thread.

Describe how the PC is behaving at the moment.

Hi Micah_6:8,

I completed those steps. The computer seems to be okay but the problems were intermittent so I feel a bit guarded. I opened IE and checked a couple of websites and didn't have any crazy pop-ups, so that is a huge improvement. Do you think I am in good shape now?

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!

Run Hijack This!
Click "Do a systen scan only".
Then "check" the box to the left of these item(s):

O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {2318C2B1-4965-11d4-9B18-009027A5CD4F} - (no file)

Reboot.

That's it.
