I am a newbie and I don't know what I"m looking at. Please help. Everytime I open IE on my laptop, I get a toolbar that I can't get rid of and continuous messages that I have spyware and virsuses. When I ran spybot, it identified the spyware, but it seems to replicate itself. Here is my HJT output.

Thanks

Hi buckeyefrank100. Welcome to TomCoyote forums! I'm looking over your log now, and will post back soon. Until I complete my training, everything that I post to you must be checked by an expert - so there may be a small delay between posts. Thanks for your patience. :)
Hi buckeyefrank100.

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
  • Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.
  • Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
  • Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"
The program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works. When it is done, the results of the scan will be displayed and it will create a report named rapport.txt in the root of your drive (C:\rapport.txt).

Please post that log as a reply to this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other options until you are asked to do so!
Thank you for replying. I am sorry it is taking so long. I became very busy at work very quickly and haven't had a chance to look at it until last night. I downloaded the smitfraud program, but I cannot start my laptop in safe mode. I press F8 when it's booting up and I select the option to open in safe mode. I then select the administrator account and after a few seconds, 'safe mode' is listed on the corners of the screen along with some other wording at the top. Windows doesn't seem to completely load. The icons never appear and the screen stays black. Any suggestions on this? I will run the program when booting up as normal and I will repost the report tonight. Thanks/Mike

Hi buckeyefrank100.

Before we get to the next part of the Smitfraud fix, we need to address the issue of booting into Safe Mode.

I think that you have something that's hiding from HijackThis. To fool the 'nasty' into letting us see the complete picture, we need to rename HijackThis.exe.

Please use Windows Explorer and navigate to the folder C:\Documents and Settings\Michael\Desktop\hijackthis\HijackThis.exe
and rename HijackThis.exe as NoHiding.exe.

Next, please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • It will create a report named vundofix.txt on your main drive (C:\vundofix.txt)
Note: It is possible that VundoFix may encounter a file it cannot remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot. Simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears at reboot.

Please post the following as a reply to this thread:
  • The VundoFix report (C:\vundofix.txt)
  • A new HijackThis log (now NoHiding.exe)

I note that McAfee does not show in the latest HijackThis log. Have you uninstalled it? If so, it is essential that you either reinstall it or install another anti-virus program immediately. Two good ones are Avast and AVG. Both are free, for personal use. You should also turn on the Windows XP Firewall. Your computer is heavily infected and is therefore especially vulnerable to attack. I note that you have installed Ewido Anti-Spyware. This is a an excellent anti-spyware/anti-Trojan program but it is not an AV.

Update Java Runtime:

You are using an old version of Java. This could be preventing us from cleaning the Vundo infection. Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason, it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date, and also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 5.0 Update 9 .
  • Go to http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
  • Click on the link named Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 9
  • Click on Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language and save the downloaded file to your hard disk
  • Go to Start => Control Panel => Add or Remove Programs
  • Uninstall all old versions of Java (Java 2 Runtime Environment, JRE or JSE)
  • Reboot your computer
  • Install the new version by running the newly-downloaded file, and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Reboot your computer
ComboFix by sUBs
  • Download this file - combofix.exe
  • Close all open windows.
  • Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Please split the log into separate posts (on this thread) to ensure that they don't get cut off. It is important that I see the full log.

It is very important that you do not run Ewido, or any other similar programs, unless I tell you to. Also, please do not attempt any alternative fixes. There are a number of things that, if done, can actually interfere with cleaning the malware from your system.

Please post the ComboFix log and a new HijackThis log as a reply to this thread. Please make sure that they haven't been cut off.
Thank you again for your help. Here are the logs. Hi buckeyefrank100. Before we continue, I will need an answer to the following questions: 1. Did you uninstall McAfee? 2. If so, have you re-installed it or installed another anti-virus program? Please let me know the answers to these questions as soon as possible.
Hi buckeyefrank100.

Please note that if you have any program operating that would keep scripts from making changes to your system, that program or programs must be disabled during all fixes.

Please go to Start -> Control Panel -> Add or Remove Programs and uninstall the following program(s), if present.
PurityScan
ClickSpring
Yazzle
OIN
OuterInfo

Anything similar with OIN or OuterInfo in the name.

If nothing is found, then download this uninstaller to your desktop:
http://www.purityscan.com/ps_uninstaller.exe

Double-click ps_uninstaller.exe and let it run.
IMPORTANT: REBOOT your computer afterwards

VundoFix.exe

Please delete the version that you have on your desktop and download the latest version from here to your desktop.

Rootkit Revealer
  • Create a new folder, named RKR, in the root of your main drive (usually Local Disk (C:\)
  • Download Rootkit Revealer from here
  • Unzip (extract) RootkitRevealer.zip to the new folder
  • Go to Start=>Run, enter C:\RKR\RootkitRevealer.exe, the click OK
  • Close all other windows and click on the Scan button
  • Important: Leave the computer idle while the scan runs.
  • When the Scan is finished, click on File=>Save… to save the text file to the C:\RKR\ folder
Run HijackThis and click Scan and then check (tick) the following, if present (don't worry if any are missing):

Close down all programs, browsers and other open windows. Make sure that only the above items are checked and then click on Fix checked.

HijackThis may not remove all of the files relating to the fixed items. We therefore need to check this and delete them if necessary. First we need to make sure that you can see all of the files.
  • Click Start
  • Open My Computer
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options
  • Select the View tab
  • Advanced Settings: Under Hidden files and folders, select Show hidden files and folders
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (Recommended) option
  • Click Yes to confirm
  • Click OK
You will need to reboot your computer into Safe Mode for the next steps. N.B. It would be a good idea for you to print these instructions, as you will not have access to the internet. If you are still unable to reboot into Safe Mode, then you will have to remain in Normal Mode.

Important: If you have an 'always on' connection to the internet, physically disconnect that connection until you are finished with Safe Mode and have rebooted back into normal mode.

Boot to Safe Mode. To do this:
  • Restart your computer.
  • Continually tap the F8 button as your computer is booting (a menu appears).
  • Use up-arrow key to select Safe Mode and press Enter.
Click on Start then My Computer and find the following files and folders, shown highlighted in red. Delete any found but don't worry if they're missing. The majority of them should already have been removed during our fixes.
  • C:\Documents and Settings\Michael\Local Settings\Application Data\785135ad.exe <– File only
  • C:\Program Files\vb\ <– Folder
  • C:\Program Files\MPVIDEOCODEC\ <– Folder
  • C:\WINDOWS\g68153593.dll <– File only
  • C:\WINDOWS\g74299281.dll <– File only
  • C:\WINDOWS\system32\cfneglgn.dll <– File only
  • C:\WINDOWS\system32\cfneglgn.dll <– File only
  • C:\WINDOWS\system32\cjh.dll <– File only
  • C:\WINDOWS\system32\ddayx.dll <– File only
  • C:\WINDOWS\system32\ixt1.dll <– File only
  • C:\WINDOWS\system32\sehkxmxj.dll <– File only
Also, look for the following folders and delete them if found. The folder names are not complete. If you find more than one candidate, or if you have any doubts, do not delete them - post the names in your reply.
  • C:\Program Files\Common Files\RACLE~1\ <– Folder (This one will start with 'RACLE')
  • C:\Program Files\M?crosoft\ <– Folder. (The '?' is probably a cyrillic character. The folder that you are looking for is NOT Microsoft! It may look like it says Microsoft, but you need to check the contents of the folder and their properties. Is there a file which looks like m?iexec.exe? Right-click on it and select Properties. Is it a Microsoft file? Do the same with other files in the folder. If you have any doubt, do NOT delete the folder and post details of it's contents in your reply).
You will need to search for the following file and delete it, if found. It will probably be in your C:\Windows\System32\ or C:\Windows\ folder.
  • winskt32.dll
Reboot your computer normally.

Please post, as a reply to this thread:
  • The VundoFix report (C:\vundofix.txt)
  • The Rootkit Revealer report
  • A new HijackThis log
  • Whether, or not, you can boot into Safe Mode
