Thanks for sending your information. We are sorry for the delay in responding. The volunteers here are swamped and unfortunately not all logs get answered as quickly as we'd like.

If you still need help with your problem, please run Hijack This again. Scan and copy the log, then post it here, in this topic . We do need to see a current logfile.

Please provide a description of the problem.

Please do not edit your Hijack This log. We need to see the entire logfile, with no revisions. If anything is disabled using MSCONFIG, please enable all, before scanning with Hijack This.

Hi jbok:

Please print, or copy and paste this text into a Notepad file and place it on your desktop, to review as you work. Please proceed with this fix in the order provided below.

There is a lot of Malware present. Take your time and be sure to get them all.

You look to be using two full time Anti-Virus Programs. Doing so can cause conflicts between the two and can result in providing you with less protection, rather than more. I suggest Uninstalling AVG in Add/Remove Programs, since it is free and you probably paid for Symantec.

Are you running a FIREWALL ? Having one firewall is an absolute necessity, for any PC connected to the Internet.

Symantec Security Response has developed a removal tool for Trackware.Webhancer. Use this removal tool,as it is the easiest way to remove this risk. Use this link.
http://www.symantec.com/security_response/…-080814-0724-99

Next:
Go to Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs. If found remove the program(s).

Optional - VIEWPOINT MANAGER Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This will change from what we know in 2006 read this article: http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546Additional info: http://vil.nai.com/vil/content/v_137262.htmI suggest you remove the program now. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present.
  • Viewpoint
  • Viewpoint Manager
  • Viewpoint Media Player
  • Viewpoint Toolbar
Fix the items identified in the HijackThis log below. Your call.

Optional - MESSENGER PLUS! I see you have messenger plus installed possibly with sponsors. They are responsible for popups, changing startpage and extra toolbars and the LOP infection. So, I advise you to uninstall MessengerPlus first. If you really like the program and think it's very usefull, you can install it again AFTER your system is clean again. Please make sure you install it without the sponsors. (They'll ask you in the beginning of the install process.)During the uninstall you may get a little window as in the example here: http://www.msgplus.net/images/sponsor_uninstall.jpgIf you can't find that window, look in your taskbar. Type the code you'll see in that window and click uninstall.Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove Messenger Plus.

Optional - P2P Networking I strongly suggest that you remove the P2P networking.Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove P2P Networking.If/when asked whether you also want to remove Altnet components, say 'Yes'. P2P Networking is a totally useless Kazaa add-on, and it's been reported to be responsible for serious system slowdowns.Read this article for alternatives that will provide some of the same functions without the garbage. http://www.spywareinfo.com/articles/p2p/Fix also the items identified in the HijackThis log below.

Next:
Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Close all windows and browsers, leaving only HijackThis running.

Place a check beside each of these entries listed below, if still present.

Please advise if any problems remain.

Please use the [external image: Posted Image] button to reply.
I finished with your instructions, we no longer pay for symantec so we are using AVG all the time. I was unable to locate symantec in the programs to remove it but could not find it. I removed a program that looked like Norton, is that the same thing?

I was unable to find a program named P2P networking

A firewall is in place now.

I ran Ad-aware about an hour after I was done with everything, and when it was done removing the critical objects, the AVG screen popped up saying it found the C:\\windows\system32ssec.exe (trogan horse generic.UGR) again.

I hope I am doing everything correctly, it seems confusing, but your instructions are very helpful and easy to follow. Thank you for all the help you are giving.

Here is my new log.

Hi jbok. You're welcome.

Please print, or copy and paste this text into a Notepad file and place it on your desktop, to review as you work. Please proceed with this fix in the order provided below. Please read this, before beginning.

You're right. It is confusing and it isn't getting any easier for me either.
Running Ad-Aware is a good start and should be done about once a month.
You are doing fine. That was a lot of malware to deal with.

In answer to your question, Norton/Symantec are the same company. So, if you are no longer paying for it, it is just a burden on your System. It should all be Uninstalled in Control Panel–>Add/Remove Programs and the remaining entries etc fixed in Hijack This and any files remaining, deleted.

We will use Ewido, to attempt to find and remove the Trojan that Ad-Aware is reporting.

I do not see a firewall installed.

Below you will find a link to Zone Alarm, which has a good free firewall for personal use, another for kerio (free for personal use) and a link to sygate. Note that it is not recommended to run two firewalls simultaneously, not even along with the new Microsoft firewall, which is not recommended.
http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/cata…sku_list_za.jsp
http://www.kerio.com/us/kpf_home.html
http://smb.sygate.com/products/spf_pro.htm

Then:
To disable the XP firewall: Control Panel > Internet Options > Connections > Settings > Properties > Advanced…. Remove the check mark from the "Internet Connection Firewall" box and click "OK." Now, install your new firewall, without any further delay and certainly before going onto the internet.

Next:
WeatherBugGo to Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs option. If found check your version of the program(s). Versions 6.4.0.9 and onward are not considered Adware. Your option if you want to keep it, or update. If you decide not to keep it, then it must be Uninstalled in Add/Remove Programs.

Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Close all windows and browsers, leaving only HijackThis running.

Place a check beside each of these entries listed below, if still present.

The following are optional fixes:
These are both resources hogs. If they are not needed at startup, these entries can be fixed with Hijack This. Doing that will not remove the Program(s), but will make it necessary to start them manually, if needed.Your Option.

O4 - Startup: Office Startup.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA.EXE

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Reboot into Safe Mode: see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders shown DARK and delete them, if still present:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\ubbv.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\fhsxc.exe

Exit Explorer, enable hidden files and reboot.

If you were unable to delete any of the files, then please follow these additional instructions:
Download Pocket Killbox and unzip it; save it to your Desktop.
Run it, and click the radio button that says Delete a file on reboot. For each of the files you could not delete, paste them one at a time into the full path of file to delete box and click the red circle with a white cross in it.
The program will ask you if you want to reboot; say No each time until the last one has been pasted in whereupon you should answer Yes.
Let the system reboot.

Next: The following is very important and Ewido will take a very long time to run, so be prepared for that.

First, lets do a bit of cleaning, to make the Ewido report managable.

Clean your Cache and Cookies in IE:
  • Close all instances of Outlook Express and Internet Explorer
  • Go to Control Panel > Internet Options > General tab
  • Click the "Delete Cookies" button
  • Next to it, Click the "Delete Files" button
  • When prompted, place a check in: "Delete all offline content", click OK
Clean your Cache and Cookies in Firefox (In case you also have Firefox installed):
  • Go to Tools > Options.
  • Click Privacy in the menu on the left side of the Options window.
  • Click the Clear button located to the right of each option (History, Cookies, Cache).
  • Click OK to close the Options window
Alternatively, you can clear all information stored while browsing by clicking Clear All.
A confirmation dialog box will be shown before clearing the information.
Clean other Temporary files + Recycle bin
  • Go to start > run and type: cleanmgr and click ok.
  • Let it scan your system for files to remove.
  • Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
  • Press OK to remove them.

Please Note: This is a new version of Ewido Anti-Malware. It has a new set of setup and running instructions. Please delete any other versions and use the setup and usage directions shown below.

Download ewido anti-spyware from HERE and save that file to your desktop.
This is a 30 day trial of the program
    • Once you have downloaded ewido anti-spyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
    • Once the setup is complete you will need run ewido and update the definition files.
    • On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "Update now" link.
    • Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
    • Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
    • Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
    • Under "Reports"
    • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
    • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
Close ewido anti-spyware, Do Not run a scan at this time.

Reboot your computer into SafeMode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight SafeMode then hit enter.
IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while ewido is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:
    • Lauch ewido-anti-spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
    • Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan".
    • ewido will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
    • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions"
    • Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
    • Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important). I suggest saving it to your desktop.
Close ewido and reboot your system back into Normal Mode.

Please run Hijack This again. Scan and copy the log, then post it into this topic, along with the Ewido report.

Please advise if any problems remain.

Please use the [external image: Posted Image] button to reply.
Everything went fine and so far AVG has not detected the trogan that I was unable to get rid of. It was the main reason for me to ask for your help, but I guess my computer was kind of sick and you have helped me learn about what I need to be doing right. Thank you.

The only thing I was not able to complete was getting rid of P2P Networking. It does not show up in Add/Remove, but it shows up when I open the "control panel" and select "Network and Internet Connections"

::Report end
Hi jbok:

The only thing I was not able to complete was getting rid of P2P Networking. It does not show up in Add/Remove, but it shows up when I open the "control panel" and select "Network and Internet Connections"

If you are unable to delet it there,
Use ctl/alt/del to go into Task Manager. If it is found there, hilight it and click on END PROCESS.
Then, exit Task Manager.

Then, see if it can be deleted from wherever it is found.

The items in Ewido quarantine can be emptied. It is important that the temp, Temporary Internet files and cookies be deleted, just before running Ewido, or the Ewido report can be impossibly bloated with them.

Your Hijack This logfile looks to be clean.
If there are no problems, please be sure to use the link to see TonyKlein's good advice (below). Those Protection programs offered free, are some of the best available and are recommended for every PC connected to the Internet. Prevention is much better than the altenative.

One of the best features of Windows XP is the System Restore option, however if Malware infects a computer with this operating system the Malware can be backed up in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is necessary after a virus removal.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(winXP)

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Also, see TonyKlein's good advice and highly recommended FREE PROTECTION PROGRAMS. A must for all PC users.
