Hi kaplajo:

Please print, or copy and paste this text into a Notepad file and place it on your desktop, to review as you work. Please proceed with this fix in the order provided below.

You are running HijackThis from its zipped archive; please create a new folder for it and unzip the program into it. It is very important you do this before anything else!

Next:
Brute Force Uninstaller.Unzip it to a folder of it’s own (let’s say c:\BFU\).
Then read the tutorial to download the required .bfu file. http://metallica.geekstogo.com/BFUinstructions.html
When ready Copy and paste this link in the texte box. http://metallica.geekstogo.com/alcanshorty.bfu
Download the file to the c:\BFU\ folder (or the folder you installed the application.)
Start the program by doubleclicking BFU.exe
In the ‘scriptline to execute’ copy and paste c:\bfu\alcanshorty.bfu.Press the execute button and let it do it’s job.
Wait for the ‘complete script execution’ box to popup and press OK.Press exit button to terminate the BFU program.
Open Internet Explorer.Under Tools > Internet Options > on the General tab change your startpage to the one you want.

Next:
Smitfraud infection detected.Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri).Extract all the content to a folder named SmitfraudFix on your Desktop.
Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present). Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
Caution: Running SmitfraudFix in option #2 on an uninfected machine will remove your desktop background.

Next:
Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Close all windows and browsers, leaving only HijackThis running.

Place a check beside each of these entries listed below, if still present.

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Windows update loader] C:\Windows\xpupdate.exe

The following are optional fixes:
If these are known and trusted, keep them.

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.powdermag.com/
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page_bak = http://www.doglotion.com/

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Reboot into Safe Mode: see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders shown DARK and delete them, if still present:

C:\Windows\xpupdate.exe

Exit Explorer, enable hidden files and reboot.

Please run Hijack This again. Scan and copy the log, then post it into this topic, along with the SmitfraudFix text.

Please use the [external image: Posted Image] button to reply. Download
Thanks so much for your help. Sorry for the delayed response, I was out of town. Here are the new logs:

Hi kaplajo:

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site. Please follow the instructions exactly in the order listed; this is very important!

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process. A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Then please reboot into Normal Windows. Please post the contents of the SmitfraudFix log located at C:\rapport.txt into this topic, along with a new HijackThis log.

Please use the [external image: Posted Image] button to reply.
Thanks again.

Hi kaplajo. You're welcome.

SmitfraudFix took care of the big problem. Not much left to do now.

Close all windows and browsers, leaving only HijackThis running.

Place a check beside each of these entries listed below, if still present.

O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {0BF43445-2F28-4351-9252-17FE6E806AA0} - (no file)

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Your Hijack This logfile looks to be clean.
If there are no problems, please be sure to use the link to see TonyKlein's good advice (below). Those Protection programs offered free, are some of the best available and are recommended for every PC connected to the Internet. Prevention is much better than the alternative.

One of the best features of Windows XP is the System Restore option, however if Malware infects a computer with this operating system the Malware can be backed up in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is necessary after a virus removal.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(winXP)

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

* Clean your Cache and Cookies in IE:
Close all instances of Outlook Express and Internet Explorer
Go to Control Panel > Internet Options > General tab
Click the "Delete Cookies" button
Next to it, Click the "Delete Files" button
When prompted, place a check in: "Delete all offline content", click OK

* Clean your Cache and Cookies in Firefox (In case you also have Firefox installed):
Go to Tools > Options.
Click Privacy in the menu on the left side of the Options window.
Click the Clear button located to the right of each option (History, Cookies, Cache).
Click OK to close the Options window
Alternatively, you can clear all information stored while browsing by clicking Clear All.
A confirmation dialog box will be shown before clearing the information.

* Clean other Temporary files + Recycle bin

Go to start > run and type: cleanmgr and click ok.
Let it scan your system for files to remove.
Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
Press OK to remove them.

Also, see TonyKlein's good advice and highly recommended FREE PROTECTION PROGRAMS. A must for all PC users.

So how did I get infected in the first place?
