Hi
I've managed to aquire an annoying addition to my system tray, which keeps telling me I have a "Critical System Error" and linking me to a website trying to sell me VirusBurst. I've run SpyBot and AdAware scans and removed everything they've found but it won't go away. Hoping you can help.

This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns, so please be patient while it works. It will create a file named: C:\rapport.txt

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other options until you are asked to do so!

Note: The file process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool." It is not a virus but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs; therefore, they may alert the user.

Post back with the C:\rapport.txt and a new HijackThis log.
Hi Waterfalls
Thanks for your super-fast response.

Hi,

Please print or copy these instructions because you will be working in Safe Mode without an Internet connection. Make sure to work through all the steps in the exact order in which they are listed below. If there's anything that you do not understand, ask your question(s) before moving on with the fixes.

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode.
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Login on your usual account.

Hi Waterfalls
Thanks again for getting back to me so quickly.
I ran the Ewido scan and got rid of the infected files, but when I selected the Reports icon it told there were no reports available, so here are my rapport and HijackThis logs.

Hi,

Things are looking much better now. Regarding the ewido report, try looking in C:\Program Files\ewido anti-spyware 4.0\Reports and see if it is there. If it is, just copy/paste it in your next reply. If it is not, then open ewido, click Infections and it should open to the Quarantine tab. See if you can highlight the entries and copy them to paste in your next reply. If you cannot, don't worry about it. Just confirm in your next reply that there are files there so I know that ewido quarantined them. Skip the cookies that were quarantined - I'm just interested in malware files that ewido found.

Now, there's a few things left for you to do.

• I see that you have Adware Alert installed on your computer. This application had a dubious reputation until they released a new version in the fall of 2005. If you have the latest version, then there's no problem. If you have an earlier version, then you should consider uninstalling it.
See, http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-s…#adw-alert_note

• IF you have an earlier version of AdwareAlert and wish to uninstall it, then do the following:
- Go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs
- Select Adware Alert > click Remove/Change
- Exit.
- Reboot your computer.

• Start HijackThis, click System Scan Only and place a checkmark next to the following items:
O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search - http://edits.mywebsearch.com/toolbaredits/…arch.jhtml

IF you uninstalled an earlier version of Adware Alert, then place a checkmark next to the following as well:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AdwareAlert] C:\Program Files\AdwareAlert\AdwareAlert.exe -boot

Close ALL browsers and open windows/programs except HijackThis and click 'Fix Checked'. Then, exit the program.

• You have an outdated version of Java which, because of security reasons, needs to be updated. To update Java:
- Go to Start -> Control Panel -> Add/Remove programs
- Search in the list for all previous installed versions of Java. (J2SE Runtime Environment…)
- Select the version(s) and click Remove
- Then download and install the newest version from here:
http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

• Reboot your computer.

• Post back with a new HijackThis log. Also, let me know how your computer is running now.
Hi
I seem to have a problem with the Ewido report - I've looked in Reports and in Quarantine and both folders are empty. As far as I can remember, the scan found and deleted six infected objects.

The computer appears to be running fine now and the VirusBurst alert has disappeared.

Hi,

• You have not updated Java. Because of security reasons, you need to update it. Refer to my instructions posted above.

• I'd like to confirm that there are no leftover malware files, so please perform an onlinescan with Panda Online. Please use this scanner instead of any other scanner! You have to use Internet Explorer for this scan.
- Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
- A new window will open…click the Check Now button
- Enter your Country
- Enter your State/Province
- Enter your e-mail address and click send
- Select either Home User or Company
- Click the big Scan Now button
- If it wants to install an ActiveX component, allow it
- It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
- When the download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
- When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the "See Report" button, then "Save Report" and save it to a convenient location.

• Post back with the results of the Panda scan and a new HijackThis log. Also, let me know how your computer is running now.
Hi
I've downloaded the latest version of Java and verified the installation, so here's the results of the Panda scan and HijackThis log.

Hi I've downloaded ATF Cleaner, set the system to show all files and rebooted into Safe Mode, but when I tried to delete the C:\WINDOWS\sdkoh32.exe file I got the following error message. "Cannot delete sdkoh32: It is being used by another person or program. Close any programs that might be using the file and try again."
Okay. Perform these steps in exactly the order I have them.

Download Unlocker and install it.
- Once installed, go to the C:\WINDOWS\sdkoh32.exe file.
- Right-click onto the file.
- Choose 'Unlocker' from the context menu.
- A new Window will open.
- Click the button 'Unlock all' below.
- Then delete the sdkoh32.exe file.

Note: It may be possible that you will not be able to delete it yet, and a reboot is needed.

Reboot your computer.

After reboot, delete the sdkoh32.exe file if you were not able to delete it right after using the Unlocker.

Post back and let me know how things worked.
Hi It didn't want to go, but after a couple of reboots it seems to have finally disappeared. I wasn't sure if you wanted me to continue with the steps in your previous post, so I decided to err on the side of caution and wait till I got the go-ahead from you.
