I've recently had this program show up in task manager, using up 99 cpu cycles and not doing anything. I've tried letting it run for a while, but for some reason I keep hearing those internet explorer link click sounds in the background, and now a popup window from IE shows. Uh oh. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi

Logs looking better, still a few things to do.

We need to stop a process running.
  • Double click HijackThis.exe to launch it.
  • Click Config.
  • Click Misc Tools.
  • Click Open Process Manager.
  • Scan down the list of processes to find the one below, then click on it to highlight it.
  • Click Kill Process, then click Yes when prompted.
  • Exit out of Hijack This.
Process to stop.

C:\Program Files\Common Files\{3812B5C6-070A-1033-1114-050303240001}\Update.exe

Now delete the following folder (in bold) C:\Program Files\Common Files\{3812B5C6-070A-1033-1114-050303240001}

Let me know if you have any problems.

I can't find any information on this file pvmodule.exe

from this line in your HJT log O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PVModule] C:\PROGRA~1\PRINTV~1\pvmodule.exe

Do you know what programme this belongs to, and is it one you installed yourself.

If not, I'd like you to check it and another for viruses.
  • Go to VirusTotal or Jotti's, and scan the following file(s).

C:\Program Files\PRINTV~1\pvmodule.exe
C:\Program Files\PRINTV~1\PRINTH~1.DLL

Note: The folder PRINTV~1 will be a folder whose first 6 letters will be PRINTV, similarly the DLL file will start with the letters PRINTH
  • Click on the Browse button at the top of the screen.
  • Browse to the first file on the list.
  • Click OK.
  • Click Send, and the file will upload to VirusTotal / Jotti, where it will be scanned by several anti-virus programmes.
  • After a while, a window will open, with details of what the scans found.
  • Note details of any viruses found.
  • Repeat for all files on the list, and post me the details please.
If the above scanner sites are oversubscribed, try Virus.org.

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner

Note: You must be using Internet Explorer as your browser as it will be necessary to install an Active X component to your computer.

Important If you have previously used Kaspersky Online Scanner (before 8th Aug 2006), you will have to uninstall the old version using Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel before you can use the new version.

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
  • Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
  • Now click on Scan Settings.
  • In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended (If available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
      • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK.
  • Now under select a target to scan select My Computer.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post please, along with the details of the scans at Virus Total (if performed) and a new HJT log.
Did not end up deleting files.

Hey there Gary, I believe PrintView (as the full name is) is a module installed by Epson printer drivers. However, I have done a scan on them, and both state that the files is OK;

File: pvmodule.exe

Hi faern,

OK, just a little cleaning up to do now.

Thanks for the info on PrintView, look like its OK.

Most of what you see in the Kaspersky scan is legit, it is a very thorough scan and even detects the infected files quarantined in your Trend Micro Quarantine files, and your System Restore points. You can only be re-infected from your system restore if you perform a restore, we'll clear these out a little later when I'm sure we've got rid of everything (better an infected RP than no RP if we have unexpected problems).

Right, lets get things cleaned up.

Make sure that you can see hidden files and folders.
  • Click Start.
  • Click My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known file types.
  • Click OK.
Search for Hidden Files
By default, the Search companion does not search for hidden files. Because of this, you may be unable to find files, even though they exist on the drive.

To search for hidden or system files in Windows XP:
  • Click Start.
  • Click Search.
  • Click All files and folders.
  • Click More advanced options.
  • Click to select the Search hidden files and folders check box.
Now can you find and delete the following files.

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\pilur6g6.default\Cache\92941175d01
C:\WINDOWS\system32\opnliff.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\pmkhh.dll.vir
C:\WINDOWS\system32\RACLE~1\mmc.exe

NOTE: Be careful with the last file, there is a legitimate Windows file of the same name in this location C:\WINDOWS\System32\mmc.exe be careful to delete the one in the folder whose first 5 letters are RACLE.

Let me know if you have any problems.

We need to clear out your Temp Files.

Download ATF Cleaner by Atribune and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Check the following boxes:
    • Windows Temp
    • Current User Temp
    • All Users Temp
    • Temporary Internet Files
    • Prefetch
    • Recycle Bin
    • Java Cache
  • The rest are optional - if you want to remove the lot, check Select All.
  • Now click Empty Selected.
  • When you get the Done Cleaning message, click OK.
  • If you use Firefox browser.
    • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    • If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • If you use Opera browser.
    • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    • If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
Let me know how things went, and how your computer's behaving now, then we'll clean out your System Restore points, and secure your computer against further infection.
Hi Gary R: In truth after your first miracle fix with Update.exe I've been doing great! I'm just wondering about all those viruses detected by Kaspersky; is there any need to delete them? It also found ~35 infected files in total; what should I do about those ambiguous infected files that it labelled?
As I said in my earlier post, Kaspersky detects infected files in the Quarantine folders of your other AV programmes and also in your System Restore points. Also some items are flagged more than once. There are also a lot of items flagged because they have been locked by your system. These are legit items, and do not need to be "fixed". There is also a False Positive. The installer for Daemon tools is flagged. It is a heuristic detection, and is false. Installer files are often falsely flagged by Kaspersky because of the nature of their function. The quarantined files are encrypted and cannot re-infect you. The System Restore files cannot re-infect you unless you do a restore, and we'll clear them out on the next post. ONLY DELETE THE ITEMS I ASKED YOU TO.
Sorry, I didn't mention that I had already followed all your steps. >_< I have gotten rid of all the files you have asked me to. C:\WINDOWS\system32\RACLE~1\ This folder contains a subfolder named "RACLE~1" as well. Both folders, in fact the whole directory is empty. Should I delete or leave as is?
Hi faern,

You may as well delete the RACLE~1 folder.

It appears your system is all clean. Time to secure your system to prevent against further intrusions.

THESE STEPS ARE VERY IMPORTANT

Lets reset system restore
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected. Please note you need Administrator Access to clean the restore points.
  • Turn off System Restore.
    • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
    • Click Properties.
    • Click the System Restore tab.
    • Check Turn off System Restore.
    • Click Apply, and then click OK.
  • Reboot.
  • Turn ON System Restore.
    • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
    • Click Properties.
    • Click the System Restore tab.
    • UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
    • Click Apply, and then click OK.
  • NOTE: only do this ONCE, NOTon a regular basis
We need to re hide system files.

To do so, please follow the steps below:
  • Double-click My Computer.
  • Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
  • Click the View tab.
  • Put a check by "Hide file extensions for known file types."
  • Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Do not show hidden files and folders."
  • Check "Hide protected operating system files."
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.

Updating Windows and Internet Explorer

IMPORTANT: You need to update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site to get the critical updates.

If you're running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed. (Free at Microsoft Office Update).

Make your Internet Explorer more secure
  • From within Internet Explorer click on Tools > Options > Security > Internet > Custom Level.
  • Make sure these options are set as follows:
    • Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
    • Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
    • Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
    • Installation of desktop items to Prompt
    • Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
    • Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
  • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
  • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
  • Press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
The following are free programs that are designed to keep your computer clean. A brief description is included with each item, click on name to go to download site.
  • Adaware SE Personal
Adaware is a free program. It scans for known spyware on your computer. These scans should be run at least once every two weeks. For more information, see this tutorial
  • Spybot S & D
Spybot is a scanner like Adaware. It scans for spyware and other malicious programs. It is important to have both Adaware and Spybot on your computer because each program provides unique detection and protection measures. Spybot has preventitive tools that stop programs from even installing on your computer.
To see how to set this up as well as more spybot features, see here
  • SpywareBlaster
Spyware blaster is a program that stops known malicious activex controls from installing on your computer. It works by changing settings in your registry. It makes "kill bits" in the registry, so that certain activex controls can't install.
If you don't know what activex controls are, see here
  • IE Spyad
It puts many bad webpages on your restricted zones LIST. This means that you can still view the "bad" webpages, but the webpages can't do certain things (such as use javascripts and cookies). Use IE Spyad for single account computers, and IE Spyad 2 for multi account computers.
  • Hosts file:
    • Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them.
    • In a very basic sense, they are used to locate webpages.
    • We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain webpages.
    • However, it can slow down certain computers.
    • This is why using a hosts file is optional!!
    • Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file, here.
  • If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
    • Click the start button (at the lower left hand corner of your screen)
    • Click run
    • In the dialog box, type services.msc
    • hit enter, then locate dns client
    • Highlight it, then double-click it.

Please take the time to go and complain - that forum has a topic for your infection which is Purity Scan …. (if not, post in the Is your infection not listed here? topic). Please post as a reply, you do not need to register to do so (but you can if you wish). It will also have a list of other places you can go to to register your complaint, depending on the country you are resident in. Please read the topics and complain, it is only with such complaints to goverment or government agencies that something will get done.

Once again, please post and tell me how things are going with your system… problems etc.

Keep secure.

Again; thank you very, very much for your time and effort in helping me. Your effort has NOT been wasted.

Until .. next time .. hopefully not!

Faern.
