Hello!
I go by FencerGirl. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research.

Please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:
  • I will working be on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Finally, please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

It may take me a while to reply to you as all of my fixes are being checked by experts to ensure that you are getting a good fix. And remember, like you I have a real life, so I may not be at my computer when you are!

FencerGirl
Hi Bikemonster,

It looks like you've been doing some cleaning before you posted this log. Let's clean up what's remaining on your computer and make sure nothing else is lurking.

Please follow these steps in order to clean your system.
  • SHOW IT ALL! Be sure that Windows is set to show hidden and system files and folders.
In My Computer, click Tools >> Folder Options >> View, set Hidden files and folder to Show, and uncheck Hide protected operating system files.
  • HOUSECLEANING. Especially if your computer’s performance is heavily compromised, clean out the Temporary Internet Files and Temp folders first.
Navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.
Navigate to the C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp\ folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.
Go to Start > Run and type %temp% in the Run box. The Temp folder will open. Click Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.
Finally, go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.
    Empty Your Recycle Bin.
  • FIX THE DAMAGE DONE BY NEWDOTNET.
    Before trying to remove NewDotNet.
    Download WinsockFix.zip © Option^Explicit.
UnZip WinsockFix.zip (Pay close attention to where the file is extracted to.)

    Now follow these steps:
    1. Click on start, then settings and then control panel.
    2. Double-click on the Add/Remove Programs icon.
    3. Look through the installed programs for a program called New.Net or NewDotNet.
    4. If there is no uninstall program listed then do the following:
    1. Go to http://newdotnet.com/removal.html
    2. Scroll down to Procedure 4 and follow the removal instructions.
Then reboot and delete the C:\Program Files\NewDotNet\ directory.
At this point you should be clean of newdotnet.

If you have lost Internet connection then run WinsockFix.exe. Click the Fix button.
This program will clean up your TCP/IP connection and rebuild the database.
After the program is complete, reboot and your problems should be resolved.
  • REMOVE PROGRAMS. Some parasites can be easily and effectively removed from the Add/Remove Programs applet in the Windows Control Panel.
Please go to Start >> Control Panel >> Add/Remove Programs and remove Starware and MyWebSearch if present.
  • CLEAN OUT ANY REMAINING GARBAGE. We need to clean up any garbage left over from the uninstalls.
Scan with HijackThis and check the following if present.

CLOSE ALL OTHER WINDOWS and select "Fixed Checked".
  • DOWNLOAD AND RUN EWIDO.
    Preparation
  • Download the trial version of Ewido anti-spyware from here and save it to your Desktop.
If you already have this program installed, skip to Updating Ewido: below.

    * Please note that these instructions are for the new version - Ewido anti-spyware. If you have the old version - Ewido anti-malware and it is the:
  • paid-for version - you will need to go here and obtain an updated license code before you upgrade.
  • free version - you will need to uninstall it and reboot before installing the new version.
Double click the ewido-setup file to begin installation and follow the prompts.
When the program has been installed, and you click the Finish button, Ewido anti-spyware will open.
  • Updating Ewido:

By default Ewido is configured to update automatically so, if you have an active internet connection, it should do so following installation. If you are unsure whether or not it has done so, do the following:
  • Click the Update icon at the top and under "Manual Update" - click the Start update button.
  • Either Ewido will update or inform you that no update was available.
  • If you cannot access the internet with the infected PC, or you are having problems updating, you can download the signatures file from here.
Once you have installed Ewido, double click ewido-signatures-full-current.exe to update it.

    Changing Recommended Actions
  • Click the Scanner icon at the top and then click the Settings Tab.
  • Under "How to act?" click Recommended actions and select "Quarantine" from the menu.
You can now close Ewido anti-spyware.

Ewido anti-spyware is designed to be used to both scan for and remove malicious files and also to run in real-time alongside, but not replace, your existing anti-virus program to give an added layer of protection.
Both the Resident Shield and Automatic Updates will only be available for the thirty day trial period, after that Ewido will revert to a stand-alone scanner which you can keep and manually update for free and use in a similar way to Ad-Aware SE Personal, Spybot S&D etc.
Should you wish to benefit from the real-time protection, you will need to upgrade the program. To do this, simply open it and click on the Buy now button.

Log off from the internet and disconnect your modem cable for the duration of the fix.
Removal

To make sure you remove everything, you'll want to get into safe mode. You can do this by restarting your computer, then contiunally tapping F8 until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, then hit enter.
You'll want to print out these instructions because you will not have internet access while in Safe Mode.
  • Ensure that ALL open Windows / Programs / Folders are closed and then run Ewido anti-spyware.
    • If it is not already selected, click the Scanner icon at the top and then select the Scan Tab.
    • Click "Complete System Scan"
    • While the scan is in progress the PC should be left otherwise idle - so if you fancy a cuppa, now's the time to put the kettle on!
    • When the scan has completed, any threats that Ewido has detected will be displayed.
    • Click the Apply all actions button at the bottom.
    • When Ewido has finished, it will display the message "All actions have been applied".

      Saving a report:
    • Click the Save Report button at the bottom left and the "Reports" window will open.
    • The content of the scan report will be displayed in the right hand pane and a copy will be automatically saved as Report-Scan-date-time.txt into the C:\Program Files\ewido anti-spyware 4.0\Reports folder.
    • You will need to post a copy of this report into your next reply, so if it is more convenient, you can save another copy of this report elsewhere:
Click the Save report as button and select a destination by clicking the down arrow to the right of the Save in: text box and then click Save.
    Close Ewido Anti-Spyware.
  • Boot into Normal Mode.
[*]TIDY UP. Almost there!

Now, browse to the following folders and files and delete them if present.
C:\Program Files\NewDotNet

Now, reboot (stay in normal mode), scan again with HijackThis and post a new HijackThis log along with your Ewido log and a description of how your computer is running.
Dear Fencergirl: I am running ME and Ewido is for 2000 and XP only. It will not open!! Suggestions?, I have followed all other instructions to the Ewido download. Thank you so very much for your work and assisitance. Peace, and RideOn…. Tim
D'oh! My sincere apologies. You'd think that since I also run ME, I'd remember that Ewido won't work on it anymore.
Alright, let's run Spy-Bot and Adaware in place of Ewido.
  • Ad-Aware
  • Update Ad-Aware SE Personal:
    • Double-click the Ad-Aware SE Personal icon on your desktop.
    • Click "Check for updates now" then click "Connect".
    • It will check for any updates. If any are found click "OK" to download and install the updates. Once it has finished click "Finish".
  • Run Ad-Aware SE Personal:
    • Click the "Start" button.
    • Uncheck the "Search for negligible risk entries" entry.
    • Choose the "Use custom scanning options" scan mode.
    • Click the "Next" button.
    • Ad-Aware will begin to scan for malware residing on your computer.
    • Allow the scan to finish.
    • Right-click on any entry in the list and click "Select All" to select the whole list.
    • Click "Next" and choose "OK" at the prompt to quarantine and remove the objects.
Spy-Bot
  • Download SpyBot Search and Destroy.
  • In the Menu Bar at the top of the Spybot window you will see 'Mode'. Make certain that 'default mode' has a check mark beside it.
  • Close ALL windows except Spybot S&D
  • Click the button to ‘Search for Updates’ then download and install the Updates.
  • Next click the button ‘Check for Problems'
  • When Spybot is complete, it will be showing ‘RED’ entries bold 'Black' entries and ‘GREEN’ entries in the window
  • Make certain there is a check mark beside all of the RED entries ONLY.
  • Choose ‘Fix Selected Problems’ and allow Spybot to fix the RED entries.
  • REBOOT to complete the scan and clear memory.
Please do these instead of Ewido, then pick up "Tidy Up" from my original post. Also, how's your computer running now?
Ms. FencerGirl:
I have completed all the instructions you suggested. Thanx. Following is the latest Hijack logfile after all was completed. I haven't done anything on my computer yet, but I will let you know how it is running via a separate post. Thanx again. And if you're ever in Boulder, CO I owe you a lunch. Tim

Hey Bikemonster,
I'll keep your offer in mind if I ever get to Colorado. Your log appears to be clean.
I do have a theory regarding the poor performance of your computer, however.
As a fellow Windows ME user (I'm on my ME machine right now!), I know that many of the big name anti-virus softwares don't play well with Windows ME.
Could you please tell me what version of McAffee you are running?
I'd like to do a little more research in the matter.

Also, why don't we try turning off a start up item using msconfig.
  • Go to Start>>Run and type msconfig
  • When it opens, go to the start up tab.
  • Click the check box in front of KB891711 to so that it is no longer checked.
  • Click apply.
  • Reboot your computer.
How are things running now?

By the way, you are doing great! So, keep with it and we'll get you figured out!
Here's the latest scan. I will let you know how it is running soon.

The computer seems to be running ok except for the internet. It seems extremely slow when pulling up any web-site. Other than that - a-ok. Tim
,… and one more thing, my version of McAffee Virusscan is: Build: 10.0.27 Engine Version: 5100 Dat Version: 4848 Dat File created: 09/08/2006 McAffee Firewall Plus: Build is 7.1.113 Sorry to keep peppering you with these posts, but… Both of these programs were provided free to members using Comcast.net services. I have never been able to make the firewall work properely.
Hello and thanks for the updates.
Your HijackThis log still looks clean.
Well, looking into McAfee VirusScan, it appears that McAfee does not support any OS older than Windows 2000.
This may be one source of your problems. If you are not attached to McAfee, it may behoove you to uninstall it and replace it.
There are 2 free anti-virus applications that work well on Windows ME. One is Avast! and the other is AVG. Both require free annual registration, but that's it.
It's fine if you want to continue with McAfee, but be aware that if you ever have to call them for support, they probably won't be able to help due to your older OS.

I have do another idea, however. I see that you are using Internet Explorer version 6 (which is what you should be using).
Have you ever installed Windows ME over itself? This would include doing a repair install. Windows ME comes with IE version 5.5. If you've installed ME over itself, you may have what is called "version soup".
Version soup gives IE an identity crisis and since IE is integral to Windows Explorer, your whole system can get thrown off.

One final idea would be to switch to FireFox, instead of IE. Since ME is no longer supported by Microsoft, no more security updates will be coming.
FireFox is just as secure (some would argue that it is more so) and works great on ME.

Let me know the answers to these questions, and if you have any, and we'll go from there.
Thanx again. I have been behooved and removed McAffee and installed Avast and Firefox!! I had been using Maxthon as a web browser and I seem to recall that within the last several months I may have reinstalled IE, but I can't say for sure. My children use IE. I have uninstalled Maxthon, is it also ok to uninstall IE?? Thanx for all your help! Would you like another Hijack log? I will see how this runs tomorrow. Thanx and RideOn: Tim
Hi Tim, Do not uninstall IE. It is integral to Windows. Reinstalling IE shouldn't be an issue, just reinstalling Windows. Let me know how things are running and give me one more HijackThis log.
Well, here's my latest file. All seems to be running smoother than before by quite a lot.
Thanx
