My McAfee firewall appeared to be disabled one day and since then I am being redirected to http://www.brookspaddlegear.com/redirect/

I ran scans with McAfee and Spybot and was told all was clean. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Hi michaelp, Welcome to the TomCoyote Forums My name is mschroe919 and I am going to read your log. I would like to help you So if you would…. Please post back a new log, since the last log is dated 8/19/2006. I would like a fresh log. And if you still need help. Or if not let us know too. Thanks mschroe919
Thank you so much mschroe919 and sorry I thought I used the latest report. Here is a fresh one. In the meantime I also cleared my temp files and used my disk tools for further cleaning. I downloaded and ran Ewido in safe mode - came back clean. I have also since disabled the windows firewall as I already run McAfee. Thanks for having a look at this.

Michael

Hi Michael

Welcome back to the TomCoyote Forums.

You log isn't too bad but need a little work:

Let me suggest you copy and paste these instructions into word pad, and print it out so you can follow the steps in order.

First of all You are running MyWay, Please read this:

Although not technically malware, it is thought to be bad by many experts and it will bring malware with it. There are safer alternatives available such as the Google toolbar. My Web Search also known as the My Way Speedbar is the Internet Explorer toolbar part of the Fun Web Products suite of utilities such as Smiley Central, Cursor Mania, My Mail Stationary, My Mail Signature, PopSwatter, Popular Screensavers, and the My Way website portal. The toolbar allows easy access to search engine results and a 404 Error Redirector called My Total Search among other things to your browser. This is not to be confused with the IBIS Web Search toolbar. MyWay is a search toolbar that installs into Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator, adding search functions and popup blocking. It reports your surfing activity anonymously to MyWay affiliates, helping them to serve targeted advertising to you. As a BHO, MyWay shares the memory that your browser uses, detects events, creates additional windows while you are surfing, and monitors your activity. When a new browser window is opened, MyWay will send a configuration request about 5k in size.

The MySearch and MyWay variants have been bundled with Grokster, Morpheus, WeatherBug, and software from mgshareware.com. MySearch has also been installed by the FavoriteMan parasite.
The MyWeb variant is bundled with software (Popswatter, SmileyCentral, My Mail Stamp) from “Fun Web Products” (also the same people as MyWay). For the MyWeb variant, be sure to also remove ‘Fun Web Products Easy Installer’.
'My Search Bar’ (MySearch variant)
‘MyWay Speed Bar’ (MyWay)
‘My Web Search Bar’ (MyWeb)

========================================================
Lets go to work:

Now if you decided to remove MyWay from your computer, please follow this:

1.) Click Start » Control Panel » Add/Remove Programs, and then Uninstall these programs (if present):

MyWaySA
My Web Search Bar
Search Assistant - My Way
Search Assistant - My Web Search

2.) Please open HJT, click Do a system scan only, and then place a checkmark beside each of these entries:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://www.dell.ca/myway
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://mysearch.myway.com/jsp/dellsidebar.jsp?p=DC
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.jericho.ca/webcam.htm
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://www.dell.ca/myway
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.dell.ca/myway
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {4D25F926-B9FE-4682-BF72-8AB8210D6D75} - C:\Program Files\MyWaySA\SrchAsDe\deSrcAs.dll
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {4D25F921-B9FE-4682-BF72-8AB8210D6D75} - C:\Program Files\MyWaySA\SrchAsDe\deSrcAs.dll

After placing all the checkmarks, close all windows (except HJT), and then hit Fix Checked.
When it finishes, exit HJT.

3.) Find and delete this folder in RED

C:\Program Files\MyWaySA

4.) Next: Reboot

5.) NEXT:
Your Java needs to be updated.

Update the Java at:
http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp
Be sure you uninstall all old versions first!
==================================================

This might help with Java up date.When you get to this site:

http://www.java.com/en/download/windows_xpi.jsp
Do this:

Then this:

[external image: Posted Image]
====================================================
NEXT:
Post another HJT log and I will check it again for your PC is still
being redirected to http://www.brookspaddlegear.com/redirect/
After this fix it should be okay. But we will see.
Good luuck mschroe919
Hi Mschroe919 and thank you so very much. I uninstalled myway although I could not find C:\Program Files\MyWaySA. I then followed the instructions in regards to HJT. I then uninstalled java and reinstalled. On the java website I have not been able to confirm if I did that properly - the xp button does not work so I used the windows offline route. I have been able to go see the installed program on my drive though.

Excellent! My homepage is no longer a hostage! I reset my home page back to jericho beach cam. One thing though, the note book just does not seem right still. I have gone from about a 30 second boot to several minutes. I disabled ewido so that I am not running too much virus software (I have a new mcafee package). Any ideas? Just seems that there is still something amiss even though I have run spybot, ewido and mcafee.

Thank you again Mschroe919 your advice was spot on. Cheers.

Michael

Hi michaelp,

Welcome back to the TomCoyote Forums.
Your Pc log is clean.
How is your boot up time?
I see you have a lot of programs that start up on reboot. This will slow it up. Most of the programs
are goood but don't need to start, as they can be started manualy.
You may look into that on your own.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Note you may have some of theses programs allready, if so just a reminder to keep updated.

FIRST:
You need to create a new Clean restore point.

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn it back on.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Remove the Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

NEXT:
Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:

1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
2. Click once on the Security tab
3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
4. Click once on the Custom Level button.

1. Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
2. Change theDownload unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
3. Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
4. Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
5. Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
6. Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
7. When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
8. If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.

Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Use an Anti Virus Software
It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. See these links for a listing of some on line & their stand-alone anti virus programs:
If you don't have one here are some of the better AV products.

Symantec/Norton Antivirus: http://www.symantec.com/nav/nav_9xnt/
Kapersky AV: http://www.kaspersky.com/buyonline.html?info=25
Nod32 : http://www.nod32.com/home/home.htm
Panda AV: http://www.pandasoftware.com/
McAfee Virusscan: http://us.mcafee.com/root/package.asp?pkgid=100
AVG Anti-Virus (Free version available) http://www.grisoft.com/

Update your Anti Virus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
============================================================
NEXT:

Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.
If you don't have one see link below for a free firewall:

ZoneAlarm:

Sunbelt Kerio:

================================================================================

Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.

This will provide real-time spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software

Get the download and tutorial for Spybot S&D here:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial43.html
=========================================================================

Install Ad-Aware
Install and download Ad-Aware. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software in conjunction with Spybot. The download and tutorial on installing & using Ad-aware can be found here:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial48.html

====================================================================

Install SpywareBlaster
SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. A article on anti-malware products with links for this program and others can be found here:

http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
========================================================================

Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Let me know what you think of our forum.
and how the PC is behaving?

Good luck Mschroe919
Hi Mschroe919 and thank you to the tenth power. I am extremely impressed with all the help you have provided and happy for everything I have learned on this board. I will be making a donation. I think you are also correct about the start up menu around speed and I will see what I can do there. I have all the programs below except ad-aware and spywareblaster which I will try. Last 2 questions for you and one may sound very foolish - my connection is wireless and to-date has been unsecured. I did that as I do not always get an option to set up encryped. Does that defeat the whole purpose of having all the other protection? Let's just say I do not pay bank bills and things from on this connection but…. Lastly I read somewhere here that it is not a good idea to run dual firewalls - I kept mcafee on and disabled windows - sound correct? Cheers and best wishes. Michael
