Hi Folks:

Thanks in advance.
This is my third trip to Tom Coyote over two years. You people seem to be the only ones that can really help clear out all the nasty stuff one "adopts" from the WWW these days. You saved my daughters computer 2 years ago……

My problem today is actualnames searchpike. Keeps coming back after spyware doctor finds it and destroys it. I use to have look2me problems. Look2me might still be lurking. I did a google search on actualnames searchpike and tried most of the stuff I found there but it keeps coming back.

Going to internet options and deleting files, cookies, etc. erased actualnames for one search cycle…..

I use internet explorer 7 and aol. I use the aol visus scan and firewall. I have spybot, spyware doctor, ad-aware-SE and CW Shredder.

Experience wise, I can usually follow your directions - but you push my computer knowledge to the limit….

So, let's begin!. Please review the log file and/or advise me on how to proceed.

I should also let you know that I recently purchased an Iomega external hard drive to use as a computer back up devide. I am afraid I backed up this configuration in it's infected state. When we get it clean I'll back it up again. I guess one question is - if I back it up clean and tell it to overwrite the old system backup - will it really overwrite the junk?

best regards
I am heading to paypal right now to make a contribution.

Larry

Hi,

Your log looks clean. Regarding actualnames, please do the following.

• Go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs
- Select ActualNames and click "Change/Remove"
- Select AdvSearch and click "Change/Remove"
- Exit.

Reboot your computer! (Important)

• Next, navigate to and delete the following folders if present:
C:\Program Files\ActualNames
C:\Program Files\AdvSearch

• Make sure your Anti-Virus program is updated and do a complete scan.

• Perform an onlinescan with Panda Online. Please use this scanner instead of any other scanner! You have to use Internet Explorer for this scan.
- Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
- A new window will open…click the Check Now button
- Enter your Country
- Enter your State/Province
- Enter your e-mail address and click send
- Select either Home User or Company
- Click the big Scan Now button
- If it wants to install an ActiveX component, allow it
- It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
- When the download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
- When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the "See Report" button, then "Save Report" and save it to a convenient location.

• Post back with the results of the Panda scan.
Okie Dokie Ms. Waterfalls: Did all that and drew a blank. Neither Actualnames nor Advsearch were found in the control panel add/remove program list. These items were also not found in the c:\program file list. I did the panda soft scan and the result was – "no viruses or other malicious software have been found!" FYI - I did do a spyware doctor scan this morning and it did report both actualnames and look2me. I asked spyware doctor to remove these. I'll do another spyware doctor scan now to see ith they are still hanging around. Regards Larry
Hi,

• Please download Combofix: http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/combofix.exe
and save to the desktop.

1. Double click on combo.exe & follow the prompts.
2. When finished, it will produce a logfile located at C:\ComboFix.txt.
3. Post the contents of that log in your next reply with a new hijackthis log.

Notes:
* Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause your system to stall/hang.
* Do not proceed with the rest of the fix if you fail to run combofix
* Disable script blocking if you have NAV installed so it will not interfere with the fix. Trojan Hunter has been reported to detect combofix as Worm.Qiv.100

• Post back with the combofix.txt log and a new HijackThis log.
Hello again:

Hi,

I don't see it anywhere, but let's try this. If it's there, the following steps will remove it. You will need to print or copy these instructions because you will be working in Safe Mode without an Internet connection.

• Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune and save it to your desktop.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only

• The following is not malware. It is a reminder to register your Creative Labs SoundBlaster Live! card. Its popping up would drive me nuts after a while, so you can fix it if you wish.

Start HijackThis, click System Scan Only and place a checkmark next to the following item:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UpdReg] C:\WINDOWS\UpdReg.EXE

Close ALL browsers and open windows/programs except HijackThis and click 'Fix Checked'.

• Open Notepad and copy and paste the text inside the quotebox in it:

REGEDIT4

Save this as fix.reg -> choose to save as *all files -> and place it on your desktop.

Thanks for the help.

I performed all the steps you recommended. The only problem I had was is safe mode. You asked that I navigate to a couple of items on the list to look for system\redirect entries. My system did not allow me to navigate or select entries on that screen. Part of it scrolled by so fast I could not read it before it scrolled off the screen. Nevertheless, I don't think there are any redirect commands in the system string. Only a few items scrolled off screen. I also repeated this step several times to try to read all the screen.

My XP system generally runs O.K. but it helps to do a daily restart as it slows down over time. There is a hit of something running in the background because often when I shut it down I get a dialogue box that flashes up briefly talking about the system not being able to shut down because the following program is running - or something to that effect. Here is the important part. The header reads

"ZOX+etnlaepf0r………….. It goes by too fast to read.

Unfortunately actualnames still appears in the spyware doctor scan log. I have run my system through several on off and scan cycles to establish this.

Here is the highthis log.

Hi,

You will need to print or copy these instructions because you again will be working in Safe Mode without an Internet connection.

• First, right-click onto My Computer and select "Manage" -> Event Viewer -> System. Look for the "Zox" message. If you don't see it in "System" - try looking in "Applications" or in "Security." Copy the entire message to post back in your reply.

• Next, open Spyware Doctor:
1. Click the "Settings" button on the left side of the Spyware Doctor window.
2. Underneath "Pick a category", choose "Log Settings".
3. Underneath the checkboxes you should see several log file entries noted by the date/time of the entry. Double-click the most recent log file for actualnames. The log should appear in your default web browser.
Copy the log to post back in your reply.

• Now, download and install Ewido Anti-Spyware v4.0
1. After download, double click on the file to launch the install process.
2. Choose a language, click "OK" and then click "Next".
3. Read the "License Agreement" and click "I Agree".
4. Accept default installation path: C:\Program Files\ewido anti-spyware 4.0, click "Next", then click "Install".
5. After setup completes, click "Finish" to start the program automatically or launch ewido by double-clicking its icon on your desktop or in the system tray.
6. The main "Status" menu will appear. Select "Change state" to inactivate 'Resident Shield' and 'Automatic Updates'.
7. Then right click on ewdio in the system tray and uncheck "Start with Windows".
8. Go to Start > Run and type: services.msc
  • Press "OK".
  • Click the "Extended tab" and scroll down the list to find ewido anti-spyware 4.0 guard.
  • When you find the guard service, double-click on it.
  • In the Properties Window > General Tab that opens, click the "Stop" button.
  • From the drop-down menu next to "Startup Type", click on "Manual".
  • Now click "Apply", then "OK" and close the Services window.
9. Select the "Update" button and click "Start update". If you are having problems with the updater, manually update with the Ewido Full database installer from here. Exit Ewido when done.
Do NOT perform a scan yet.

• Reboot into SAFE MODE.
To get into the Windows XP Safe Mode, restart your computer and, just before Windows starts to load, tap the F8 key a few times. Choose Safe Mode from the menu that will appear and press Enter.

• Clean out your Temporary Internet files. Proceed like this:
  • Quit Internet Explorer and quit any instances of Windows Explorer.
  • Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Internet Options.
  • On the General tab, click Delete Files under Temporary Internet Files.
  • In the Delete Files dialog box, tick the Delete all offline content check box , and then click OK.
  • On the General tab, click Delete Cookies under Temporary Internet Files, and then click OK.
  • Click on the Programs tab then click the Reset Web Settings button. Click Apply then OK.
  • Click OK.
Next Click Start, click Control Panel and then double-click Display. Click on the Desktop tab, then click the Customize Desktop button. Click on the Web tab. Under Web Pages you should see a checked entry called Security info or something similar. If it is there, select that entry and click the Delete button. Click Ok then Apply and Ok.

Empty the Recycle Bin by right-clicking the Recycle Bin icon on your Desktop, and then clicking Empty Recycle Bin

Scan with Ewido as follows:
1. Launch Ewido, click on the "Scanner" button and choose the "Settings" tab.
  • Under "How to act?", click on "Recommended actions" and choose "Quarantine" to set default action for detected malware.
  • Under "How to Scan?" check all (default).
  • Under "Possibly unwanted software" check all (default).
  • Under "What to Scan?" make sure "Scan every file" is selected (default).
  • Under "Reports" select "Automatically generate report after every scan and UNcheck "Only if threats were found".
2. Click the "Scan" tab to return to scanning options.
3. Click "Complete System Scan" to start.
4. When the scan has finished you will be presented with a list of infected objects found. Click "Apply all actions" to place the files in Quarantine.

IMPORTANT! Do not save the report before you have clicked the Apply all actions button. If you do, the log that is created will indicate "No action taken", making it more difficult to interpret the report. So be sure you save it only AFTER clicking the "Apply all actions" button?

5. Click on "Save Report" to view all completed scans. Click on the most recent scan you just performed and select "Save report as" - the default file name will be in date/time format as follows: Report-Scan-20060620-142816.txt. Save to your desktop. A copy of each report will also be saved in C:\Program Files\ewido anti-spyware 4.0\Reports\
6. Exit Ewido when done and submit the log report in your next response.

Note: Close all open windows, programs, and DO NOT USE the computer while Ewido is scanning. If Explorer or other programs are open during the scan that means certain files will also be in use. Some malware will insert itself and hide in areas that are "protected" by Windows when the files are being used. This can hamper Ewido's ability to clean properly and may result in reinfection.

Note: If Ewido "crashes" or "hangs" during the scan, try scanning again by doing this:
1. Scan one sector of the system at a time by using the "Custom Scan" feature. To do this select Scanner > Custom Scan and click on Add drive/directory/file. Browse to C:\Windows > System, add this folder to the list and click on "Start Scan". When the scan is complete, repeat the Custom Scan but this time, browse to and add the System32 folder. Then keep repeating this procedure until all your folders have been scanned. Make sure you include the Documents & Settings folder.
2. If this still does not help, then turn the ADS scanner off while making a Custom Scan. To do this select Scanner > Scan Settings and untick "Scan in NTFS Alternate Data Streams". Then repeat the steps above for performing a Custom Scan.

• Reboot into Normal Mode.

• Post back with the following:
- the "Zox" message from Event Viewer;
- the Spyware Doctor log for the most recent alert for actualnames;
- the results of the Ewido scan; and
- a new HijackThis log.
Greetings: The next few days are a bust time for me. It might take a couple of days for me to complete this and get back to you. Best Larry
Greetings: Well, perhaps we do this piecemeal. Step 1. ZOX event viewer message. I struck out here. After a recent shutdown whhere this message appeared I immedately went back and look at 60 to 80 entries in all the system, security and applications logs looking at the text and other information in each pop up dialogue box. I did not see anything relating to ZOX in any of the entries. Step 2 Spyware Doctor log Sorry, I have trouble here as well. I can get to settings, pick a category, and log settings. I can see the list of log file entries but when I double click on these nothing happens. I can't seem to open the log. Poking around i did see a list that claimed to have actualnames in quarantine. Can you advise me on how to open the log(s). Larry
Hi:

Here are the log files. The process of getting these was not exactly as you asked.

I was not able to do the enwido scan is safe mode so I did it in the regular mode of operation. I have windows XP home edition. You might be directing actions in XP profession bacause some of the screens and dialogue boxes are different or do not appear for me.

Larry
