Win32.Softomate recreates itself in the registry

Hey,
My ZoneAlarm has detected Win32.Softomate [trojan] but it keeps on recreating itself after deletion. I have to date deleted it 7 times total. I recently downloaded this program which i should've know better not to download :

http://www.hagioteam.be/2006/08/25/700-cool-fonts/#more-1547

[the .exe file was named "681_Fonts_for_Web_Design.exe"]

The connection speed during the download was erratic and looked like someone was stealing my bandwidth somehow?? [btw it was from a russian site]. Anyhow, to get the download done faster, i used flashget.

After dble-clicking the .exe file it showed an install window w/ about 5-6 lines of just question marks substituting in effect the words that constituted the install notes; i guess i didn't have the right language setting ? so it just showed lines of ????????????????? then another 5 lines of question marks.

After cancelling the install before anything could be extracted, [i'm guessing*] the damage was already done, though i'm still not sure if the suspicious .exe file is actually responsible for the Win32.Softomate trojan.

I've not yet run any of the scans in safe mode yet.
haven't turned off-then-on again System restore yet.
haven't deleted everything in my \windows\temp folder yet.

i've ran the following scans:
TrendMicro online scan
Ewido full scan
AVG full scan
Spybot s&d
Lavasoft se
Trojan hunter
spyware blaster

when i run ccleaner i get this error

-"CClistbar"-
Runtime error '0'

Yours,

Hello and Welcome to the Forum.

You need to get a complete installer that installs HijackThis to C:\Program Files\HijackThis, making an entry in the start menu and also providing a desktop shortcut from http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/HJTsetup.exe .

Click on the link and select Save, save it to your desktop and double click HJTsetup.exe.

Open HijackThis and select: Do a system scan and save a log file.

When the scan is finished, Click Edit> Select All> Edit> Copy> and paste its contents here plese use the [Add Reply] button below.
hello Ld_tate,

note the trojan is invariably detected by ZoneAlarm at this location in the registry:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Discardable\PostSetup\Component Categories\{00021492-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}

here's my logfile:

Nothing shows in your HJT log

Please go HERE and do a online scan.
Let me know what is found.

After scan, reboot and post a new HijackThis log

Also let me know how the computer is running now.
hey, i added this above my hijack this log just in case you didn't catch it: note the trojan is invariably detected by ZoneAlarm at this location in the registry: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Discardable\PostSetup\Component Categories\{00021492-0000-0000-C000-000000000046} I could do another ZoneAlarm scan and find the trojan all over again, which may or may not be causing the erratic bandwith rollercoaster speeds going up/down in the period of half-seconds sometimes wavering but it may be my imagination. scanning now..
Nothing detected in F-secure.

here is the log after reboot:

Backup your Registry…
- Press "CTRL - ALT - DEL" keys all at the same time to start "Task Manager"
- In the Task Manager window click on "File", then from the drop-down menu select "New Task (Run…)"
- In the "Create New Task" window enter\type "regedit" (without quotes)
- Once Regedit opens click on the FILE menu and select Export
- Save the file as backup. Save the file somewhere you will remember and not delete.
IMPORTANT: make sure to set the export range to ALL

Download Registrar Registry Manager from here:
http://www.resplendence.com/download/reglite.exe

Put it in its own folder. You may want to keep this program. It is an excellent free, registry editor.

Copy and paste the follow text into the address bar, then hit 'Go':
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Discardable\PostSetup\Component Categories

In the pane on the right are the values associated with that key.
We want to remove this one -> {00021492-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}

Right click on it, and select delete.
If you get a confirmation question, respond OK then close out the program.
you see that registry key was already deleted. the problem is ZoneAlarm picks it up as a trojan then it magically reappears / recreates /regenerates / copies itself from some other location on my HDD [ ie. system restore points ] or it's a script that sends a message to a site's server somewhere to reactivate the trojan or make copies of itself again. i was thinking of turning off system restore temporarily, then going into safemode and runnign the scanners there. should i?

Go for it
what about emptying the temp folders? - i don't know how to do that exactly. AND, if it ever comes to doing a repair install - would that delete the trojan by repairing the registry or deleting stuff that don't belong?

Removing temp files:
download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time.

Cleaning the registry:

Backup your Registry…
- Press "CTRL - ALT - DEL" keys all at the same time to start "Task Manager"
- In the Task Manager window click on "File", then from the drop-down menu select "New Task (Run…)"
- In the "Create New Task" window enter\type "regedit" (without quotes)
- Once Regedit opens click on the FILE menu and select Export
- Save the file as backup. Save the file somewhere you will remember and not delete.
IMPORTANT: make sure to set the export range to ALL

I recommend you download RegSeeker. Extract it to it's own folder, open and double click RegSeeker.exe to start the program. Maximize the window and click clean registry. Check all sections and click OK. When the scan is complete, verify the backup box in lower left corner is checked and click the select all button, then select all again. Then right click within the search results and select delete. Run it again and again, deleting everything it finds until it finds nothing. Reboot and make sure your programs are working properly, control panel and add/remove programs windows open, etc (basically just do a quick check of everything). In the event anything was 'broken', you can open RegSeeker, click backups and double click any/all files to put the information back. A reboot may be required for the effects to be seen. Reboot When done.

NOTE: To be extra safe you can choose to only remove the items in RED.
