SLUGGISH Laptop Not Sure What Is Going On ...

Okay, I am not as saavy as I would like to be with this thing. All I know is that not long ago I had a great laptop that started up quickly and zipped along doing all I needed. Now, it tooks forever to boot up, I am infested with spyware and am having a bear of a time period. I keep getting a popup telling me that Poshmont A (Trojan) was blocked and some others as well (can't remember the names and I can't find them on the log - something benvenue! but they don't show on log, they just pop up as having been 'blocked'). Here are my logs from HiJack This and Ewido done today. ANY help would be absolutely great!

Welcome to the forum, sorry for the delay in responding. You have a few infections going on that are slowing your system down.

Lets do this for starters

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply along with a new HJT log please

Please do not run Option #2 yet.

Oh, and as I was logged on to do this, some AOL Spyware type thing I have picked up Poshmont, A. and something else that had the words generic! in it (wrote it down but lost it). Had the Spyware thing 'delete it', but its been there before and it comes back often. Yet, I don't see anything by those names in these lists. Once again, TIA for your help!

Good morning

That confirms that one of the infections you have is Smitfraud. We are going to run Option 2 along with another program, just follow these steps in order.

First thing to do is ( this is going to break your heart ) is to remove Bearshare it is sometimes responsibe for bringing malware along with it. You can remove it via the Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Open HJT Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows, check these entries and click on Fix Checked

Have it set up this way, check for updates and run a scan, dont forget to save the report, but dont run the scan just yet.

Once you have downloaded Ewido Anti-Spyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
Once the setup is complete you will need run Ewido and update the definition files.
On the main screen select the icon Update then select the Update now link.
Next select the Start Update button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
Once the update has completed select the Scanner icon at the top of the screen, then select the Settings tab.
Once in the Settings screen click on Recommended actions and then select Quarantine <– Dont forget this
Under Reports
Select Automatically generate report after every scan
Un-Select Only if threats were found
Close Ewido Anti-Spyware <– Do not run the scan yet.

Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :

Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
Choose your usual account.

Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

Launch Ewido-Anti-Spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
Select the Scanner icon at the top and then the Scan tab then click on Complete System Scan.
Ewido will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
If you have any infections you will prompted, then select Apply all actions
Next select the Reports icon at the top.
Select the Save report as button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system
make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important
Close Ewido

Reboot your system and run this system cleaner

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.

This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

Post back with the Smitfraud log, the Ewido log and a new HJT log please, you may have to post it into two threads if your Ewido log is to big.

Open HJT Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows, check this entry and click on Fix Checked

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [9c4df99a.exe] C:\Documents and Settings\Isa\Local Settings\Application Data\9c4df99a.exe

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing :

Click Start.
Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View tab.
Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known types option.
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

Once your system is clean, we suggest that you reverse this to keep critical windows files from accidently being deleted.

Boot into Safemode

Go to Start> Shut off your Computer> Restart
As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly,
this will bring up a menu.
Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to Safemode
Then press the Enter Key on your Keyboard

Right click on Start and then click on Explore and navigate to the following files and delete them.

C:\WINDOWS\svchost.exe

C:\Documents and Settings\Isa\Local Settings\Application Data\9c4df99a.exe

Still in Safemode, lets clean out all your temp files manually to make sure we get them all.

* Go to My Computer/ C: Drive/ Documents and Settings/ Every User on this Computer Local Settings and delete all the contents of the Temp Folder and the Temporary Internet Files Folder <–Just the contents, not the folder itself.

* Go to My Computer/ C:/ Windows/ Temp and delete all the contents of the Temp Folder <– But not the temp folder itself.

* Go to My Computer/ C:/ Windows/ Prefetch and remove all the contents of the Prefetch Folder. <–But not the Prefetch folder itself.

Close any instance of Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer.

Go to Start> Control Panel> Internet Options . You shoud be on the General Tab
Delete Cookies
Delete Files > and offline content as well

Now Empty your Recycle Bin

Reboot your system normally

Post a new HJT log please.

Gosh Ken, Thanks again for taking the time to walk me through this whole process … it amazes me how detailed you are! It's great!!!
Okay, here's the deal … I cannot seem to be rid of that stinking svchost.exe (it keeps telling me Access Denied - check if file is write protected or in use). Making me nuts!!! There was another file in one of the Temp Files that did that too, 2148 … just would not delete … tells me it is in use or write protected – Access Denied

Good Morning,

C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe <– This is legit and needed for windows to run

C:\WINDOWS\svchost.exe <– This is a virus , notice the folder its in

Its gone from your log, but to be on the safeside, do this.

Download Pocket Killbox to your desktop, unzip it to a folder that you can find

C:\WINDOWS\svchost.exe

Highlight the file with the complete path in the Quote Box and press Ctrl C on your keyboard.

Open Pocket Killbox
Go to File > Paste from clipboard
Set it to Delete on Reboot
Tick the box that says End Explorer shell while killing file
If its not greyed out..Click the radio button that say Unregister .dll before deleting.
Make sure Single File is selected
Click on the Red circle with the white X
It will ask you to confirm the deletion…Say yes
It will ask you to reboot, say yes

The rest of your log looks fine,

but post one more HJT log and lets make sure.

Hi Kiddo,

Wahoo Your log is clean.

I know sites like Bearshare, Limewire, Kazaa and a few others are appealing to kids but there really bad news, I wouldn't want any of them on my system.

Your Java is out of date and leaving your system vulnerable.
Go to your Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel and uninstall any previous (jre) installations.
Reboot your system.
Then go to the Sun Java website and download and install the update.
Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 8 <–This is what you need to download and install.
Then after install you can verify your installation here Sun Java Verify

How is everything running now???

OMGosh … Everything is Smooth As Silk!!!!

You Are My Hero!!! Thanks Again SOOOOOO MUCH!!!!!!!!! I seriously did not think I would ever get rid of all that junk! I have had a nice long talk with my wonderful teenager and told her that if she ever decided to download any of those programs again I would wring her pretty little neck!!!!!! LOL Thanks Again!!!
