Thanks for sending your information. We are sorry for the delay in responding. The volunteers here are swamped and unfortunately not all logs get answered as quickly as we'd like.

If you still need help with your problem, please run Hijack This again. Scan and copy the log, then post it here, in this topic . We do need to see a current logfile.

Please provide a description of the problem.

Hello, thanks for taking my case. A brief description of the problem – my computer takes about 8 minutes or so to startup. Folders open very slowly. Browser is sometimes working ok. I've seen an about:blank popup window a few times and my homepage has been changed several times. Hope this helps. – Simon

Hi simon080502:

Please print, or copy and paste this text into a Notepad file and place it on your desktop, to review as you work. Please proceed with this fix in the order provided below.

There are a lot of what look to me like unnecessary things in your startup, that may be causing a delay. Those that are not necessary could be set to manual startup and that may speed things up a bit.

Disable SpySweeper:
You have SpySweeper installed. While this is a great program, we need to temporarily disable (not uninstall) the program because it might stop our fix.
  • Open it click >Options over to the left then >program options>Uncheck "load at windows startup"
  • Over to the left click "shields" and uncheck all there.
  • Uncheck" home page shield".
  • Uncheck ''automatically restore default without notification".
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable SpySweeper again.

Disable Spyware Doctor:
Please disable Spyware Doctor, as it may interfere with the fix. To disable Spyware Doctor:
  • Click the Spyware Doctor icon in the System Tray.
  • Click Settings.
  • Click Startup Settings under Pick a Category.
  • Uncheck Run at Windows startup.
  • Click Apply and Exit Spyware Doctor
Once your log is clean you can re-enable Spyware Doctor.

Disable Ewido:
Please disable Ewido, as it may interfere with the fix.
To disable Ewido:
From the system tray:
  • Right-click the system tray icon and uncheck real time protection.
    or From within Ewido -
  • Under 'Your security status', if the real time protection is active, deactivate it by clicking 'real time protection' until the status says 'inactive'.
Once your log is clean you can re-enable Ewido.

Thanks for your assistance. My machine seems more responsive though still dragging. Startup time is improved down to 4 minutes or so. Applications still open slowly. Please tell me know if there is anything more we can do.

Hi simon080502:

Please print, or copy and paste this text into a Notepad file and place it on your desktop, to review as you work. Please proceed with this fix in the order provided below. Please read this text before beginning and consider your options carefully.

Well, it looks like Symantec saw an opening and jumped in, when Dell was removed as your Home/Start Page. From what I saw, you would prefer Yahoo to have that honor, so we will check the entry for Symantec.

First, I would suggest deleting all temp, Temporary Internet files and Cookies. Then, do a CHKDSK and DEFRAG, in that order, because Defrag likes a clean disk to work with. If you need directions for that, please ask.

There are still some programs in Startup that I'm not sure you require there and could be started manually, when needed. Your option of course, but it may speed things up some to make startup as lean as possible.

* Clean your Cache and Cookies in IE:
Close all instances of Outlook Express and Internet Explorer
Go to Control Panel > Internet Options > General tab
Click the "Delete Cookies" button
Next to it, Click the "Delete Files" button
When prompted, place a check in: "Delete all offline content", click OK

* Clean your Cache and Cookies in Firefox (In case you also have Firefox installed):
Go to Tools > Options.
Click Privacy in the menu on the left side of the Options window.
Click the Clear button located to the right of each option (History, Cookies, Cache).
Click OK to close the Options window
Alternatively, you can clear all information stored while browsing by clicking Clear All.
A confirmation dialog box will be shown before clearing the information.

* Clean other Temporary files + Recycle bin

Go to start > run and type: cleanmgr and click ok.
Let it scan your system for files to remove.
Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
Press OK to remove them.

Then, do a CHKDSK and DEFRAGMENTATION.

Next:
Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Close all windows and browsers, leaving only HijackThis running.

Place a check beside each of these entries listed below, if still present.

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/fix_homepage/
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\msjava.dll

The following are ALL OPTIONAL fixes to fix with Hijack This:
In an effort to speed things up a bit, these could be fixed with Hijack This. Doing so will not remove the program(s), but will make it necessary to start them manually, when needed. Please Note that it is up to you, whether you want to do this, or not.
Another option, rather than fixing the following with HJT, would be to stop ALL the following in TASK MANAGER and see if that helps. If it does, add them back, but only one at a time and by doing so you may be able to tell which one, if any, is the problem and it can be dealt with accordingly.

Description Installed with Apple's iTunes for Windows. Uses ~3-4MB of memory and if disabled in MSCONFIG or deleted from the registry it will re-instate itself after running iTunes a few times and will need to be disabled again.

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Reboot into Safe Mode: see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders shown DARK and delete them, if still present:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\msjava.dll

Exit Explorer, enable hidden files and reboot.

Please run Hijack This again. Scan and copy the log, then post it into this topic.

Please advise if any problems remain.

Hello, thanks again. I followed your instructions. Startup and browser opening still taking 7 minutes or so. Thought I saw about:blank load in my IE progress bar. Symantec homepage fix appears to be back. Here is my HJT log. Thanks.

Hi simon080502:

Please print, or copy and paste this text into a Notepad file and place it on your desktop, to review as you work. Please proceed with this fix in the order provided below. Please read this text carefully before beginning, so you will know what to expect.

Norton/Symantec is very demanding of System Resources and will make your PC slower, because there are so many things it has to load from Norton/Symantec on startup. You may never be able to get a fast boot time, as long as Norton/Symantec is on your PC.
If your PC is not being taken to Norton/Symantec on bootup, then leave the entry. Removing it may be somewhat difficult and even non productive.

about:blank is a Cool Web Search parasite. I do not see it on your PC, but since you have seen it, we should check for its presence.

Please download CWShredder, from one of the following sites.
http://www.trendmicro.com/ftp/products/onl…/cwshredder.exe
http://www.majorgeeks.com/CWShredder_d3019.html
http://intermute.com/spysubtract/cwshredder_download.html

First, be sure to update CWShredder.
Then close every window, disconnect from Internet and doubleclick the CWShredder icon on your Desktop.
Click Fix and then Next, let it fix everything it asks about.

Then, please reboot.

We have not ran any online Virus scanners, or a Trojan scanner, so that is the next step in cleaning your PC. Online Virus scanners sometimes find Viruses that onboard Virus scanners miss and Ewido usually finds something that others miss.

Please use the following links to run two, or more of these online Virus Scanners and let them fix whatever they find.

If you are using any of the browsers listed just below, the following online Virus scanning site is compatable.
http://be.trendmicro-europe.com/consumer/h…call_launch.php
If you are using any of these browsers:
Microsoft Internet Explorer
Netscape (6+)
Mozilla (1+)
Firefox (all)
Opera (7.5+)

Internet Explorer users can also use the following links.

When using Trend Micro, be sure and put a check in the box by "Auto Clean" before you do the scan. If it finds anything that it cannot clean have it delete it or make a note of the file location, so you can delete it yourself.
TrendMicro HouseCall
http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner
http://www.kaspersky.co.uk/news.html?id=146100010
Bitdefender and let it delete everything it finds.
eTrust AntiVirus Web Scanner
Panda ActiveScan
Note any thing that can't be fixed.

Then, please reboot.

Then, Please download and install Ad-Aware SE and Spybot S&D according to the following instructions. If you already have these programs, please make sure they are the latest version and have been updated today. Then run full systems scans as described below.

Install and how to use the NEW Ad-aware SE
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/ind…showtutorial=48

Reboot after using Ad-Aware SE.

Download the VX cleaner plug in for Adaware. Install it, then open Adaware & go to *add-ons* & run the plug-in. If anything is found, select *clean system* & when done, reboot & run Adaware & let it finish the clean-up. Reboot again.

Would you please download the Spybot S&D program from here Spybot S&D and install it.
  • Select Search for updates.
  • Then select all available updates that are displayed in the white box.
  • Select a download mirror nearest your location.
  • Then select Download updates .
  • Shut down and restart Spybot.
  • Select the Search and destroy icon and click on Check for Problems.
  • Delete/fix anything that spybot lists In RED.
.

Then, please REBOOT, to allow Spybot to finish working.

Next, lets run Ewido Anti-Malware. Be advised it takes a long time to run and cleaning the cookies, Temp and Temporary Internet files should be done just before Ewido is ran, so there are none to make the report any larger than it has to be.

First, lets do a bit of cleaning, to make the Ewido report managable.

Clean your Cache and Cookies in IE:
  • Close all instances of Outlook Express and Internet Explorer
  • Go to Control Panel > Internet Options > General tab
  • Click the "Delete Cookies" button
  • Next to it, Click the "Delete Files" button
  • When prompted, place a check in: "Delete all offline content", click OK
Clean your Cache and Cookies in Firefox (In case you also have Firefox installed):
  • Go to Tools > Options.
  • Click Privacy in the menu on the left side of the Options window.
  • Click the Clear button located to the right of each option (History, Cookies, Cache).
  • Click OK to close the Options window
Alternatively, you can clear all information stored while browsing by clicking Clear All.
A confirmation dialog box will be shown before clearing the information.
Clean other Temporary files + Recycle bin
  • Go to start > run and type: cleanmgr and click ok.
  • Let it scan your system for files to remove.
  • Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
  • Press OK to remove them.

Please Note: This is a new version of Ewido Anti-Malware. It has a new set of setup and running instructions. Please delete any other versions and use the setup and usage directions shown below.

Download ewido anti-spyware from HERE and save that file to your desktop.
This is a 30 day trial of the program
    • Once you have downloaded ewido anti-spyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
    • Once the setup is complete you will need run ewido and update the definition files.
    • On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "Update now" link.
    • Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
    • Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
    • Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
    • Under "Reports"
    • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
    • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
Close ewido anti-spyware, Do Not run a scan at this time.

Reboot your computer into SafeMode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight SafeMode then hit enter.
IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while ewido is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:
    • Lauch ewido-anti-spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
    • Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan".
    • ewido will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
    • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions"
    • Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
    • Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important). I suggest saving it to your desktop.
Close ewido and reboot your system back into Normal Mode , then post the results of the ewido report into this topic.

Please use the [external image: Posted Image] button to reply.
Hello, my machine is booting and running much faster now! Ewido scan log posted below. Thanks again! ——————————————————— ewido anti-spyware - Scan Report ——————————————————— + Created at: 6:52:19 AM 9/22/2006 + Scan result: C:\Program Files\anti-virus\FINDnFIX\keys1\NirComLine.exe -> Not-A-Virus.RemoteAdmin.Win32.NirCmdLine.14 : Cleaned with backup (quarantined). ::Report end
Hi simon080502:

Those Virus scanners must have removed a lot, since Ewido found only one item.
It does look scary though. You can empty Ewidos quarantine and get it out of there.

Your Hijack This logfile looks to be clean.
If there are no problems, please be sure to use the link to see TonyKlein's good advice (below). Those Protection programs offered free, are some of the best available and are recommended for every PC connected to the Internet. Prevention is much better than the alternative.

One of the best features of Windows XP is the System Restore option, however if Malware infects a computer with this operating system the Malware can be backed up in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is necessary after a virus removal.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(winXP)

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Also, see TonyKlein's good advice and highly recommended FREE PROTECTION PROGRAMS. A must for all PC users.
