Hi all,
OK - I am not a complete novice but I am no expert either! My poor mother has just recently gone online for the first time and within just two hours has got badly infected. I feel very guilty as I talked her into it!
I have tried everything I know to clean her laptop but I just keep getting reinfected with popups - amaeana, qwikfind, bigdespatch, drive cleaner and loads of others. She has Windows 2000 and service pack 4. I have installed and run ZoneAlarm, AVG AV, W.32 BLackmal.E remover, Adware.Virtumonde removal tool, Vundofix, NoAdware, Spybot SD - and immunized, but every time I go back online I am reinfected. Please can you help?

Here is my HT log
Cheers
Jazz

Hello jazzie and Welcome to TomCoyote,

Let's do the following please,

STEP 1.
======
Look2Me

Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

http://www.atribune.org/downloads/l2mfix.exe
http://www.downloads.subratam.org/l2mfix.exe

You may receive pop-up asking if you will allow script to run when you perform the following instructions. Please allow the script to run.

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

If you receive, while running option #1, an error similar like: ''C:\windows\system32\cmd.exe
C:\windows\system32\autoexec.nt the system file is not suitable for running ms-dos and microsoft windows applications. choose close to terminate the application.."…then please use option 5 or the web page link in the l2mfix folder to solve this error condition. do not run the fix portion without fixing this first.

Blacklight

Download Blacklight trial from here:
http://www.f-secure.com/blacklight/
  • Hit I accept. It will take you to download page.
  • Download blbeta.exe and save it to the Desktop.
  • Once saved… double click blbeta.exe to install the program.
  • Click accept agreement and Click scan
This app too may fire off a warning from antivirus. Let the driver load.
    Wait for it to finish.
  • If it displays any items…don't do anything with them yet. Just hit exit (close)
  • It will drop a log on Desktop that starts with fsbl….big number
Please post contents of the Look2me log and the log that starts with fsbl….big number.

Hi jazzie,

I am glad the computer is running better. Please do the following:

Blacklight

Try Blacklight again (don't have to download etc. if still have it)
Download Blacklight trial from here:
http://www.f-secure.com/blacklight/
  • Hit I accept. It will take you to download page.
  • Download blbeta.exe and save it to the Desktop.
  • Once saved… double click blbeta.exe to install the program.
  • Click accept agreement and Click scan
This app too may fire off a warning from antivirus. Let the driver load.
    Wait for it to finish.
  • If it displays any items…don't do anything with them yet. Just hit exit (close)
  • It will drop a log on Desktop that starts with fsbl….big number
CWShredder

Please download and run CWShredder
Make sure that all browser windows are closed with the exception of Cwshredder and choose FIX.

Scan with HijackThis. Place a check against each of the following:
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = \blank.htm
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = \blank.htm
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [defender] c:\\dfndrff_12.exe
O20 - Winlogon Notify: AdminDebug - C:\WINNT\system32\mvn4l95q1.dll (file missing)
O20 - Winlogon Notify: ExtShellViews - C:\WINNT\system32\guard.tmp (file missing)

Close all windows or browsers except for Hijackthis. Click on Fix Checked.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them:
c:\dfndrff_12.exe<=file
Exit Explorer, and reboot as normal afterwards.
Please post (reply) with contents of log that starts with fsbl….big number and a new hijackthis log.
Hi, Thanks. Will do that. However, I will have to get back to it in a week or so as I am away for a week now. I'll keep Mums laptop so she doesnt go mad on it! I'll post backin a week or so. Thanks again. Jazz
Hi,
Ok, all done!

Here are the logs you requested.
Hows it looking?
Jazz

Hello Jazzie,

Things are looking better. Please do the following:

Disable Microsoft Windows Defender:
We need to disable your Microsoft Windows Defender Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.
  • Open Microsoft Windows Defender. Click Start, Programs, Windows Defender
  • Click on Tools, General Settings.
  • Under Real-time protection options, unselect the Turn on real-time protection check box
  • Click Save
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

Scan with HijackThis. Place a check against each of the following:
O9 - Extra button: Related - {c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a} - C:\WINNT\web\related.htm
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Show &Related Links - {c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a} - C:\WINNT\web\related.htm
O23 - Service: windows logon - Unknown owner - C:\WINNT\winlogon.exe (file missing)

Close all windows or browsers except for Hijackthis. Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Now run this online scan using Internet Explorer:
Kaspersky Online Scanner from http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
  • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
  • Standard
  • Scan Options:
  • Scan Archives
  • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:
  • Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
Copy and paste that information from Kapersky in your next post.

Post (reply) with a fresh HijackThis log and the results of Kapersky.
Hi again, jeeeez, I guess she caught it bad eh?! OK - She is reluctant to leave me her laptop anymore as I had it for a week before. Needless to say she has taken it home again. I am poppoing over in a day or two - will get right down to it. Will post back soon. You are a star - thanks Jazz :)
Hi jazzie, I think we are close to the end. I like the Kapersky scan just to double-check things. Please tell me how you obtained the Administrator priviledges back. Someone alerted me that the NTrights that I posted to you no longer exists. I appologize for giving you sites that no longer exist. Thanks Susan
Hi, I have no idea how I gained the admin rights back!! I just followed your very detailed instructions - I think! Oooh, wait - I think I looked for a download somewhere else, of the same thing, and risked it  I have done so much, I am losing track! I think what I did was, looked at reviews for it and then found a download link somewhere. I'll look into it and get back to you! Jazz
