Another option.

Step #1

Download: http://users.telenet.be/marcvn/tools/KillAFile.exe
Save it on your desktop.
Double click on KillAFile.exe and install it. This creates a new folder on your desktop: KillAFile.
Close all windows, open the KillAFile folder and double click on kill.bat.

Choose option 1 "Delete a file on reboot" and press enter.
Insert the following file and path: C:\WINDOWS\System32\mad.dll and press enter.

Your computer must reboot now.

Step #2

Scan again with HijackThis and check the following items:
O20 - AppInit_DLLs: mad.dll
After checking these items, close all browser windows except HijackThis and click "Fix checked".

Step #3

Reboot your computer again and post a fresh HijackThis log back here along with details of any problems you encountered performing the above steps and I will review it when it comes in.

Be back in the AM
Another option if the last didn't work.

Please print this page now to be sure you follow all the directions.

Click here to download and install Registrar Lite.

Reboot in "safe" mode.

Run Reglite, and paste the BOLD text below into Reglite's address bar:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows

Double-click "Appinit_Dlls" value in right pane. And look in the 'Value' box at the bottom of the new pane.

The value should contain: C:\Windows\System32\mad.dll.

IF "mad.dll' is NOT in the 'Value' box, STOP here, and let me know.

Close that "new pane".

Right-click on the Windows key in the left pane and rename it to Windows2. Then double-click "Appinit_Dlls" value in right pane once more.

Then erase the data in the 'Value' box at the bottom of the new pane.

Click 'Apply' and 'OK' to set.

Right-click on the Windows2 key in the left pane and rename it back to Windows.

Close Reglite.

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!

Run Hijack This!
Click "Do a systen scan only".
Then "check" the box to the left of these item(s):

O20 - AppInit_DLLs: mad.dll

Then click "Fix checked".

Reboot in "safe" mode.

Find and delete:

c:\windows\system32\mad.dll <— file

Some malware files may be "hidden".
Be sure to show hidden files when looking for these file(s) and/or folder(s).

Reboot in normal mode and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread. :)
Ken,
Here is the latest HJT log. I followed your instructions, so maybe mad.dll is gone this time.

Theorhet :D

Yep that #@$%@#%^ is finnally gone. :thumbup: Good job following all my instructions.

Just for my own future use, did Registrar Lite or Killafile remove mad.dll ????

FYI, all the programs we used like Killbox etc. you can drag to the recycle bin, if you ever need to use it again there will be a newer version coming along. Ewido is a trial but yours to keep. After the 30 days you will lose the background guard feature but will still be able to check for updates, run the scans and remove whatever it finds, so I would hang onto that great program.

Will kiddo, your log looks fine :thumbup: I am going to list some maintenance tips and some free programs to install, but I am going to leave this thread open for you for a week or so in case you need to post back.

Here are some free programs and tips for keeping your system up to date, and to help keep all the riff raff out of your system.

Be sure to follow the instructions for System Restore because everything we removed is backed up in that program and if you ever use it to revert your system to an earlier date, you can reinfect your self all over again.

You can use both of these, keep the one you like better and run it at least once a week

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
  • This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
Download and Install CCleaner
* Click on Run Cleaner
* Run the Issues Scan < When it asks you to backup the Registry..Say Yes
Tutorial for CCleaner

Now that your clean, we need to erase all possible older infected files that may still be lurking on your system.
* Clean out your TEMP FILES
* This procedure should be run from SAFEMODE for better results.

To Enter SAFEMODE

* Go to START/ SHUT OF YOUR COMPUTER/ RESTART
* As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly, this will bring up a menu.
* Use the UP AND DOWN ARROW KEYS to scroll up to SAFEMODE
* Then press the ENTER KEY ON YOUR KEYBOARD

* Go to My Computer/ C: Drive/ Documents and Settings/ Every User on this Computer Local Settings
and delete all the contents of the Temp Folder and the Temporary Internet Files Folder <–Just the contents, not the folder itself.

* Go to My Computer/ C:/ Windows/ Temp and delete all the contents of the Temp Folder <– But not the temp folder itself.

* Go to My Computer/ C:/ Windows/ Prefetch and remove all the contents of the Prefetch Folder. <–But not the Prefetch folder itself.

NOW RE-BOOT NORMALLY

* Open INTERNET EXPLORER
* Click on the TOOLS MENU
* Then INTERNET OPTIONS
* At the GENERAL TAB (which should be the first tab you are currently on),
* click on the DELETE FILES BUTTON and put a checkmark in DELETE ALL OFFLINE CONTENT.
* Then press the OK BUTTON . This may take quite a while, so do not be alarmed with how long it takes.
* When it is done, your Temporary Internet Files will now be deleted.

Now Empty your Recycle Bin

System Restore makes regular backups of all your settings, if you ever had to use this program to restore your
system to a previous date, you will be infected all over again so we need to clean out the previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore.

* Right-click My Computer.
* Click Properties.
* Click the System Restore tab.
* Check Turn off System Restore on all Drives.
* Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot your System

Turn ON System Restore.

* Right-click My Computer.
* ClickProperties.
* Click the System Restore tab.
* UN-Check Turn off System Restore on all Drives.
* Click Apply, and then click OK.

* Go to Start/ Control Panel/ Performance and Maintenance/ System Restore/ Create a New Restore Point
You can name the restore point anything you like, something that you can remember, You will have to be in Catagory View to see this

* Make sure that your ANTI-VIRUS SOFTWARE is up to date and run a full scan at least once aweek.

* Here are Free Anti-Virus Programs if you need one. Just install one because with AV software…MORE IS NOT BETTER. So if you are already running AV software, bypass this.

AVG Free Edition
AntVir Personal Edition

* Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.

* Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06
Check for Updates and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.

* Spyware Blaster It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed.

* Spyware Guard It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.

* Win Patrol This program will warn you when any changes are being made to your system and
give you the option to deny the change.

* IE- Spyad IE-Spyad places over 4000 web sites and domains
in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed,
although you will still be able to connect to the sites.

* Firefox Browser
It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use
them both. When it asks you if you want it to be your default browser, say NO and take the checkmark out of the box to ask you again. After you use this
for awhile, you will want to make it your default.

* Thunderbird Mail There companion mail program was highly favored in PCWorld Magazine,
this has a good spam filter and is more secure than Outlook Express.

* Zone Alarm Here is a free Firewall from Zone Labs, I wouldn't
access the internet without it.

* WINDOWS UPDATES - Enable Automatic Updates
Right click on MY COMPUTER/Click on PROPERTIES/ AUTOMATIC UPDATES and put a mark in the radio button
DOWNLOAD UPDATES FOR ME BUT LET ME CHOOSE WHEN TO INSTALL THEM.

* Go to START/ CONTROL PANEL> PERFORMANCE AND MAINTENANCE> REARRANGE ITEMS ON YOUR HARD DISK TO MAKE PROGRAMS RUN FASTER
This is the Windows Disk Defragger, run this maybe once or twice a month to keep your system running good. The first time you run it, it may take awhile.

Thanks for stopping by Tom Coyote , I'm glad I was able to help you.
Ken, I cannot begin to express my gratitude for your help with all of this. I cannot believe how difficult it was to clean the computer of all this junk. I really appreciate you taking the time to guide me through this. The program that finally killed mad.dll was Registrar. Question about Zone Alarm - will that conflict with the firewall built into XP? Again, thanks for all the help. Ken
Theorhet,

Just like AV Software, you should only have one Firewall running. The windows Firewall stops inbound attacks but not outbound, ZoneAlarm does both. If you use Zonealarm, read it carefully and be sure to download and install the Free version. As you use it, you will have to give permissions for your browser, mail etc to access the internet, after that your good to go. Go into the Control Panel in XP and look for the windows firewall and just disable it.

The internet is a great place , but just like walking down a street in a bad neighborhood you kind of have to look over your shoulder. Just be careful what you download and the sites you go into. Never click on a banner add thats flashing. If you ever get a pop up message stating that your computer is infected and click here for a free scan..DONT DO IT.. That how you will become infected.

Glad things are all back to normal :thumbup:

ken….who can now go and finish his beer :rofl:
