Hello boomer179 and Welcome to the Forums!

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/lonny/Fixwareout.exe
Save it to your desktop.

Disable Microsoft Windows Defender:
We need to disable your Microsoft Windows Defender Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.
  • Open Microsoft Windows Defender. Click Start, Programs, Windows Defender
  • Click on Tools, General Settings.
  • Under Real-time protection options, unselect the Turn on real-time protection check box
  • Click Save
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

Scan with HijackThis. Place a check against each of the following:
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Stationery\Blank.htm
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
O2 - BHO: XBTB06823 - {BA463437-C3DE-47da-8280-87596824388A} - (no file)
O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search - http://speedbar.ask.com/menusearch.html?p=4
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{E943BCD8-798E-4445-A883-911331608D6E}: NameServer = 85.255.115.4,85.255.112.14
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 85.255.115.4 85.255.112.14

Close all windows or browsers except for Hijackthis. Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Run Fixwareout on the Desktop.
Click Next, then Install, then make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish. The fix will begin; follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

At the end of the fix, you may need to restart your computer again.

Finally, please post a fresh HijackThis log, along with the contents of the logfile C:\fixwareout\report.txt
Thank you for your quick reply Susan528. Ok, I did everything you told me to do, and think I got it right.(We shall see shortly.) I am somewhere between a novice and a pro. Here are the results. Check for missing files ….. C:\WINDOWS\system32\AUTOEXEC.NT not there C:\WINDOWS\repair\autoexec.nt not there C:\WINDOWS\repair\Config.nt not present ….. End check for missing files ….. please post this at the forum

Hi boomer129,

That is what I needed, thanks. Kapersky may take awhile so you might want to get some sleep first and pick a convenient time to do it.

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {E947A403-B614-4FA8-B9E7-E790F0BDC87E} - (no file)
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {E947A403-B614-4FA8-B9E7-E790F0BDC87E} - (no file)

Close all windows or browsers except for Hijackthis. Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Now run this online scan using Internet Explorer:
Kaspersky Online Scanner from http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
  • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
  • Standard
  • Scan Options:
  • Scan Archives
  • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:
  • Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
Copy and paste that information from Kapersky in your next post.

Post (reply) with a fresh HijackThis log and the results of Kapersky.
Thanks so much again Susan. Your help is greatly appreciated.I can't get Kaspersky to paste. I saved it to my desktop, and I can pick copy, but when I try to insert it here it doesn't have a paste option. Tell me what I'm doing wrong, and I'll send it.It says it didn't find any malware if that's any help. Here's the new scan as of 6:45 am:

Hi boomer129, Don't worry about copying and pasting. If Kapersky showed that there were no infected items found that is all I need to know. How does you computer seem to be running now?
It seems to be running a little faster now. I'll run it awhile and see how it is and let you know. I would like to ask you about another problem that i'm having if i may. My coumpter has rhe EICAR_TEST_FILE in it from a test i did awhile back. I know what they say about it being harmless and all, but when my Windows One Care picks it up during it's run it says i'm infected. If i click on the clean button, i get the dreded blue screen and naturally the whole thing has to be rebooted. I have tried to do go into regedit to find it and tried to you use the search option with no luck. Can you tell me how to get rid of it? I can't thank you enough for all your help Susan.
Hi boomer129,

Let's see if we can obtain more information.

STEP 1.
======
Regscan

Please download RegScan.
Within RegScan.zip you will find the file regscan.vbs
You may have to allow this script to run or disable anti-spyware again in order for it to run.
A window will open titled RegFinder.vbs and you will see place to input search terms.
Please enter the search terms:
EICAR_TEST_FILE
After the search has completed a window titled Results.txt will open.
Please copy the results and post(reply) back in your next reply.

STEP 2.
======
FileFind

Please downloadFileFind from Atribune.
Unzip the file and save it to your desktop.

To run FileFind, please do the following:
  • Click on FileFind.exe
  • In the box labeled "Enter the directory to search"
  • Enter Drive eg.. C:\
  • In the box labeled "Enter the file to search"
  • Enter the file EICAR_TEST_FILE
  • Now click on the "Find" button
  • Once the utility has found the files click on "Export"
  • This will save a text file to your C:\ drive as /Export.txt
Double click on Export.txt, copy and paste, this information in your next post.

Please post (reply) with the Results.txt and Export.txt
Hello Susan. Did what you said and nothing came back for Regscan and for FileFind it said "0 files found in 7851 Directories." Now what can we do? Oh, thanks again for your help. :)
Gooday to you Susan. I hope your day is going well.I tried doing it with just EICAR in it and it took 51 seconds for Regscan to come back negative and FileFind looked in 7854 directories without any luck. What now?
Hi Boomer129

http://forums.microsoft.com/WindowsOneCare…32&SiteID=2

I'm not aware of any problems and I certainly don't know why you are getting a blue screen when you attempt to clean it, except that the file cannot be cleaned as it is a test virus. Yes, you should see that it is infected during a scan, but it is a test infection, not a real infection. If you want to keep it for future testing, be aware that it will always show as infected and cannot be cleaned.

We need to run a virus scanner to find this test file. I am surprised that Kapersky did not find it.
This takes awhile but it does not clean any files. If you receive a pop-up window saying something like infected item found and you will need to buy it etc. – just click on the "x" in the upper-right corner of the pop-up window to close it.

STEP 1.
======
MWAV Scan
Please download MWAV to a convenient location.
This scan only produces a report, it doesn't clean your system. I will analyze the report and recommend a course of action depending on the results.
This scan might take around 3+ hours to finish when set to scan everything.

Double-click on mwav.exe.
Put a check next to the below items before scanning:
  • Memory
  • Startup Folders
  • Drive - All Local Drives
  • Folder - then click "browse" to change the directory to C: (default is C:\Windows)
  • Registry
  • System Folders
  • Services
  • Include Sub-Directory
  • Scan All Files
Please make sure ALL of these are checked, then press the Scan button. This typically will take hours to complete.

**NOTE*** Sometimes MWav will pause and it appears to be finished, but it isn't done. Just let it run until it says it's complete.

On the bottom portion of the window, you will see the lower panel where MWav is listing "infected items", please highlight everything in that lower panel and copy them by holding CTRL + C then paste it here. The whole log will be extremely BIG so there is no way to post the log. I just need the infected items list.
