Hi,
I'm having a revolving stream of pop-ups (from different sources each time) that seem to be getting around my pop-up blocker. I've used AdAware SE personal to remove spyware but the pop-ups just seem to continue. Here's my HJT log. Anything suspicious here?

Welcome to the forum :wavey:

Please download Qoofix by RubbeR DuckY from Qoofix.zip
  • Unzip all files to a convenient location such as C:\Qoofix (make a folder for it).
  • Go to the folder you unzipped all files and run Qoofix.exe.
  • Click Begin Removal and wait for the scan to finish.
  • If an infection has been found, select yes to restart your computer.
Finally post a new HijackThis! log and the contents of the Qoofix logfile.
:)
Thanks Micah. Here's the HJT file and Qoofix logfile. I did notice that the Qoofile seemed to identify some stuff (e.g., hotsync file from my palm pilot, etc) that seem like they should be ok (though I let Qoofix do its thing on everything). Was that right or should I have been selective?

Great, thanks for the info on rogue spyware. I won't be back at that computer until I revisit my sister. May be a few weeks before i repost HJT log. But just what's been done so far knocked out the Pop-ups. Muchas Gracias. PZ
Hello Micah,

Here is the HJT file after I removed the items on your list. I also removed Spyspotter System Defender.

This is back in the list of "Running processess":

C:\WINDOWS\ALCXMNTR.EXE

Even though the "O4" was removed.

Some sources say Realtek uses it to track where you go on the net.

If you want it removed, we'll have to find what's "starting it".

To do that, you'll need to do this:

Please download/unzip this:

Registry Search 2.0 by Bobbi Flekman © 2005

on regsearch.exe, and search for this:

ALCXMNTR.EXE

[external image: Posted Image] Make sure ALL the boxes are checked under "Search".

It may take a while to run, so be patient. When finished, the search results will appear in your text editor,

Paste the contents of the search results into your next post.

I see this in the log:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MSConfig] C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Binaries\MSConfig.exe /auto

Do you have anything disabled with MSConfig that I should be concerned about?

And I see this:

C:\Program Files\Morpheus\Morpheus.exe

Personally, I'm dead set AGAINST "peer to peer" file sharing app's.

It's just another way for "bad things" to get on your machine.

If you insist on using it, I can offer only one tidbit of advice:

Be afraid.. Be very, VERY, afraid…
:o

Other than that, how's it running?
Thanks. Here's the regSearch Log: REGEDIT4 ; Registry Search 2.0 by Bobbi Flekman © 2005 ; Version: 2.0.1.0 ; Results at 8/31/2006 2:53:15 PM for strings: ; 'alcxmntr.exe' ; Strings excluded from search: ; (None) ; Search in: ; Registry Keys Registry Values Registry Data ; HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE HKEY_USERS [HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-2299510414-180288513-1412131385-1003\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\MUICache] "C:\\WINDOWS\\ALCXMNTR.EXE"="Realtek Audio - Event Monitor" [HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-2299510414-180288513-1412131385-1008\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\MUICache] "C:\\WINDOWS\\ALCXMNTR.EXE"="Realtek Audio - Event Monitor" ; End Of The Log… Yes, I am afraid of what lurks on Morpheus…but my sister uses it for music she can't seem to find anywhere else. Copy and paste the contents of the quote box below into notepad.

Save it as file name: "fixme.reg" (not including the quotes). Save as file type: *All files* and save it on your Desktop.

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-2299510414-180288513-1412131385-1003\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\MUICache]

"C:\\WINDOWS\\ALCXMNTR.EXE"=-

Then, locate fixme.reg on your desktop and it.

You will receive a prompt similar to: "Do you wish to merge the information into the registry?".

Answer 'Yes' and wait for a message to appear similar to "Merged Successfully".

Reboot.

Thank you for choosing TomCoyote for your malware removal solutions.

Securing Your PC After An Attack
Hello, Pasted the quote into notepad and saved to my desktop as "all files" but when I double click it the notepad quote just opens with no other options or messages to merge. There was an ANSI coding option that seemed a default. Should I use another coding save?
Copy the text in the following quote box into Notepad:

dir > files.txt
notepad files.txt

Save it to your desktop as see.bat

Now, the see.bat file on the desktop. A Notepad window will open up.

Please paste it's contents into your next post.

Yes, seemslike its still there. Copy and paste the contents of the quote box below into notepad.

Save it as file name: "fixme.reg" (not including the quotes). Save as file type: *All files* and save it where you can find it.

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-2299510414-180288513-1412131385-1008\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\MUICache]
"C:\\WINDOWS\\ALCXMNTR.EXE"=-

Boot in "safe mode", and log on to an account with "Administrator" privileges.

Then, locate fixme.reg and it.

You will receive a prompt similar to: "Do you wish to merge the information into the registry?".

Answer 'Yes' and wait for a message to appear similar to "Merged Successfully".

Reboot.

Run the registry search again to verify it's gone (or not).
