I need help with what to do re the HijackThis logfile below. McAfee wasn't detecting any virus, so I downloaded ZoneAlarm based on a couple of people's recommendations, and although it detected the virus it said the most recent virus version has no fix yet. I'm desperate to get rid of all the pop-ups coming from this Trojan before my kids see something they shouldn't (or anyone else for that matter)! Below is the Logfile:

Hi nuconnexions, Welcome to the Forum !!

You may wish to print out a copy of these instructions to follow while you complete this procedure

I need you to download some programs to aide in our fix :Do Not Run Them Yet

Download SmitfraudFix© by S!Ri to your Desktop.
Extract all the files to your Destop. A folder named SmitfraudFix will be created on your Desktop.

Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune

Download and Install Ewido Anti-Malware© by Ewido Networks

Launch Ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.
On the main screen select the icon Update then select the Update now link
Next select the Start Update button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
Close Ewido Anti-Malware

Reboot to Safe mode
Restart your computer and begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard just before Windows starts to load
If done right a Windows Advanced Options menu will appear.
Select the Safe Mode option and press Enter

Open the SmitfraudFix Folder, then double-click smitfraudfix.cmd file to start the tool.
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press Enter.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
You will be prompted : Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ? answer Yes by typing Y and hit Enter.
The tool will also check if wininet.dll is infected. If a clean version is found, you will be prompted to replace wininet.dll
Answer Yes to the question Replace infected file ? by typing Y and hit Enter.
The tool will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed
A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process, if you computer does not restart automatically please do it yourself manually Reboot back into Safe Mode

Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF Cleaner.exe
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program

Run Ewido Anti-Malware
Click on Scanner at top
Click on Settings
Once in the Settings screen click on Recommended actions and then select Quarantine
Under Reports, Select Automatically generate report after every scan
Un-Select Only if threats were found
Select the Scanner icon at the top and then the Scan tab then click on Complete System Scan
Ewido will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time
Once the scan is complete do the following :
If you have any infections you will prompted, then select Apply all actions
Next select the Reports icon at the top.
Select the Save report as button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
Now close Ewido Anti-Malware

Reboot into Normal Mode

Post a fresh HijackThis log, the Ewido log, and the contents of the rapport.txt file here
(You may need to use several replies as the logs may be cut off)

Thank you !
Thanks for responding so quickly, Linkmaster. Having a busy weekend, I didn't login again until tonight. I followed the instructions, and so far (about 20 minutes have passed since rebooting into normal mode) no pop-ups or unusual behaviour are happening. Below I will post the fresh HijackThis log and rapport.txt file as requested. When I ran the Ewido scan, it detected 16 malware files, and quarantined them when I selected "Apply all actions". However, under Reports it said there were no reports, so the "Save report as" button was greyed out - so I have no Ewido log to post. Let me know if I need to do more to permanently get rid of this virus/trojan/whatever it is. Also, I see that both ZoneAlarm Security Suite and Ewido Anti-Malware are running in my system tray. Is it a problem to have them both running, or should I uninstall/disable Ewido after getting this resolved?

Thanks again for your help! Below is the new HijackThis log (run after rebooting into normal mode). I will follow it with rapport.txt

Log looks clean now !! :)

You can leave Ewido running, however that is a 30 day trial version. You will lose some of the auto features but it still will work as a Manual scanner !
(I use it myself)

I am not seeing any antivirus running either ! I have a few listed below that are good !

Here are a few tools that I recommend for protecting your system and reduce the risk of infection again !!

Real Time Prevention
SpywareBlaster© by Javacool Software

Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted pests.
Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox.
Restrict the actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer.
Consumes no system resources.

Download, run, check for updates, download updates, select all, protect against checked. All done. Check for updates every couple of weeks. If you have any errors running the program like a missing file see the link at the bottom of the javacool page
IESpyad© by EHowes : This will add several hundred Restricted Sites to the Restricted Site Zone in IE.

File Cleaners (temp, prefetch, cookie, etc)
2000/XP Only
ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune
All Windows
CCleaner© by CCleaner.com

Spyware Scanners:
Ad-aware SE© by Lavasoft : Provides protection and removal of trojans, dialers, malware, browser hijackers, and tracking components
Spybot - Search & Destroy© by Safer Networking : Detects and removes spyware of different kinds from your computer

Good Free Antivirus Programs:
AVG© by Grisoft
AntiVir© by H+BEDV Datentechnik GmbH
Avast© by ALWIL Software
NOTE:Remember always have just 1 antivirus program running at a time. Having more than one running causes a conflict between the programs !! You can use one as a backup to run manually

Windows Update:
It's also very important to keep your system up to date to avoid unnecessary security risks
Windows Update

Firewalls:
If you have an "always on" internet connection, such as DSL or Cable, I recommend a Firewall.
A firewall will make your pc invisible to the outside world and will filter the outgoing and incoming traffic on your pc.
For a good idea of how vulnerable your system(s) are go to GRC
Scroll down to "Shields Up" Click on "Proceed" Then click on "Common Ports"to scan your ports.
Very good Firewalls :
ZoneAlarm Firewall© by Zone Labs
Sunbelt Kerio Personal Firewall© by Sunbelt
Comodo Personal Firewall© by Comodo Group

Alternative Browsers :
Use ANY browser besides Internet Explorer, almost every exploit is crafted to take advantage of an IE weakness
FireFox© by Mozilla
Opera© by Opera Software ASA

Always keep your Antivirus & Spyware Removal Tools current with the latest definitions and updates !!

Using these tools and keeping them updated will reduce the risk of future infections!!

Do you have any questions??
Thank you so much, Linkmaster! The continuing absence of pop-ups this morning made me think this bug had been cleaned, but it's good to have that confirmed. Re antivirus running, it is in the new HijackThis log I posted, shown as various "Zone Labs" entries - I'm trialling ZoneAlarm Security Suite, which seems to be a lot more vigilant at detecting viruses and stopping suspicious behaviour than the McAfee I had installed before. Thanks again for your help!
