Running Win XP(SP2), latest version of Viruscan & Ad-Aware SE.

I've got the DollarRevenue.Gen / Adware-Isearch trogan on my machine somehow and Virusscan isn't cleaning it. I'm getting a lot of pop ups, warning messages from Virusscan saying that a PUP has been installed, and a lot of stupid pop-ups. Also my homepage keeps getting reset. link removed for safety reasons

I will scan, find several different Trogans & Pups, and then not all of them can be deleted or cleaned. It deletes the files with DollarRevenue in them, and then tells me that a certain file(s) has Adware Isearch but the file can't be found. It won't delete, clean, or quarrantine these files, so presumbably they are still on the hard drive somewhere.

After I run scan things are ok, but within 24 hours it has the same problems agin, or if I reboot the machine, things start happening again. I've started disconnecting the internet unless I'm at the machine and during bootup, which seems to help things.

Peter at the McAfee forums gave me several suggestions this morning:
- delete all temp internet files– DONE
- reboot in safe mode & scan- DONE- found and cleaned one file

Things ran fine all day, and then just after midnight tonight, it decided to start downloading PUPs, pop-ups, and hijacking the brower home page.

Peter told me about Hijack this, so here's my logfile. The only thing I found that looks funny to me is the:

R3 - URLSearchHook: DeskbarBHO - {A8B28872-3324-4CD2-8AA3-7D555C872D96} - C:\Program Files\Deskbar\deskbar.dll

I've got a search bar down on my menu bar now that was never there before. I assume these are the files that got installed somehow- could I just delete that directory, or would Windows have a fit? There's no uninstall file in that directory nor an option on my control panel uninstall menu.

If anyone knows what to do I would be most appreciative of your help.

Thanks- wncraig

Ok, followed those instructions. The new Hijack log is below. Haven't seen anything happen yet, but the real test will be at midnight. Thats when it tried to download programs / hijack the browser every other night. I'll have it on tonight and see what happens.

I'll post up tomorrow either way and let you know the results.

Really appreciate all this help. You are a lifesaver.

Thanks.

oh yeah, the "my search" was not an option on the control panel/ uninstall window, though I did delete the folder in the program files folder. The only other things I saw on the uninstall window that I didn't recognize were these: -DAO, Jasc Software, V3.5 -NVIDIA Windows 2000/XP Display drivers -Safecast Shared Components Thanks WNC
Hi, You can uninstall Safecast Shared Components The other programs are ok. Let me know how things are going tomorrow please :)
So far, so good. Nothing happened at midnight like the previous three weeks, so I think thats fixed. I reran Ewido and just had about a dozen cookies which I quarrantined. I'll keep checking and let you know. Thanks big time! WNC
ok, let me know if anything pops up.

for now…

This is my post for when your computer is all clean - which it currently appears to be. Please let me know if you are experiencing any other problems with your computer.

If you are not having any more problems, we have just a couple of last steps to perform and then you're all set.

First, let's reset your hidden/system files and folders. System files are hidden for a reason and we don't want to have them openly available and susceptible to accidental deletion.
* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading UNSELECT Show hidden files and folders.
* CHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.
It's also a good idea to Flush your System Restore points after ridding yourself of malware:
  • Click Start | Help and Support | Undo changes to your computer with System Restore.
  • Click Create A Restore Point then click Next. Give it a name it and then click Create, then Close.
  • Close the Help and Support Center box.
  • Click Start | Run and type Cleanmgr
  • Select (C: ) then click OK.
  • Click the More Options tab.
  • Click Clean Up in the System Restore Section.
This will remove all previous restore points except the newly created one.

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs:
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
  • SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
  • IESpy-Ad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email.
To keep your operating system up to date visit
  • Microsoft Windows Update
monthly. And to keep your system clean run these free malware scannersweekly, and be aware of what emails you open and websites you visit.

To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read this article by Tony Klien: So how did I get infected in the first place?

Have a safe and happy computing day!
