Thank you for your help. I have alualert in start up. I cannot uncheck it. I installed pctools. After pstools scan, it detects the alualert and removes it. When I restart alualert reappears in start up. I also when into regedit and removed any file or folder named "alualert, symantec, norton" which there were many. Most reapeared after restart. Symptoms I noticed: online lock-ups, changes in settings, slow page changing, and erractic cursor movement. This my hjt scan. Again I thank you. bobro

I Look forward to your help susan 528. bobro
Hello bobro,

Let's do the following:

STEP 1.
======
Regscan

Please download RegScan.
Within RegScan.zip you will find the file regscan.vbs
You may have to allow this script to run or disable anti-spyware again in order for it to run.
A window will open titled RegFinder.vbs and you will see place to input search terms.
Please enter the search terms:
ALUAlert,ALUNOTIFY.EXE
After the search has completed a window titled Results.txt will open.
Please save the results so that you can post(reply) with them later.

STEP 2.
======
Disable SpySweeper:
You have SpySweeper installed. While this is a great program, we need to temporarily disable (not uninstall) the program because it might stop our fix.
Right click on the SpySweeper icon in your System Tray (near the clock).
From the pop up menu, left click on Shields, this will open the program at the same time.
Click the "Internet Explorer" tab and uncheck the following:
  • IE Favorites Shield
  • IE Security Shield
  • Broswer Helper Object (BHO) Shield
  • IE Hijack Shield
Click the "Windows System Shields" and uncheck the following:
  • Memory Shield
  • Spy Installation Shield
Click the "Startup Programs" tab and uncheck the Startup Items Shield

STEP 3.
======
Scan with HijackThis. Place a check against each of the following:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ALUAlert] C:\Program Files\Symantec\LiveUpdate\ALUNOTIFY.EXE
Close all windows or browsers except for Hijackthis. Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Please enable SpySweeper again.

Please post (reply) with the results from the Regscan and a fresh HijackThis log.
Hey Susan528, I stumbled my way through. Than you for your clear instructions. Here is what I have as der instructions. I did not reboot after performing the fix to see if it came back. I don't want to get ahead of your instrucyions. Thanks, bobro

Hi bobro, Go ahead and reboot and see if it comes back. Do not be alarmed if it does. There have been a couple of cases where person has had to uninstall SpySweeper, fix with hijackthis, and resintall SpySweeper. I hope we do not have to go that far though. I am keeping my fingers crossed! Please keep me posted what happens.

bobro
Hi bobro, If I asked you to uninstall SpySweeper, would do you have the necessary information that you could reinstall it again? Like if customer number and id were required?
Hello Susan528, yes I can. Also this is the site I refered to early. Awaiting your instructions. thank you, bobro
http://www.askmarvin.ca/forums/index.php?showtopic=3322

I've said it before, but I think I GOT IT! The key, evidently, was the AppInit_DLL's key. I didn't know it could be hidden. SO, upon yet another scan within Barts I noticed a file that it said it couldn't open. I noted it and did a search for that dll in google. It didn't return any results, so I figured it was randomly named. I renamed the suspect DLL and rebooted.

After that in HijackThis it showed the AppInit_DLLs key as showing the DLL that I had renamed.

SO… Masking is the key evidently.

I'm currently testing it in every way that I know beeped it off before. Leaving it on Hotmail would spur it pretty quickly, running Ad-Aware would trigger it sometimes, going to McAfees site would as well.

I've had it open to ALL of these sites for hours now and nothing. I'm running Spybot on it now to see what else I can find, but I do believe that I've got it whipped.

**Crosses fingers**
Hi Bobro,

I like SpySweeper and think it is a good program but I want you to uninstall SpySweeper for now.

Scan with HijackThis. Place a check against each of the following:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ALUAlert] C:\Program Files\Symantec\LiveUpdate\ALUNOTIFY.EXE
Close all windows or browsers except for Hijackthis. Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Reboot

Then run the regscan again. We want to check those registry entries.

You do not need to download it again if you still have it.

Please reply with another hijackthis log and the results of the Regscan.

- Save it as file name: fixregistry.reg Save as file type: All files (*.*) and save it on your Desktop.
- Right-click on the fixregistry.reg
- Choose Merge from the popup menu and answer Yes or Ok to any further prompts

Now please reinstall SpySweeper.
Run hijackthis and post a hijackthis log and let me know if the alert is still gone.
Good Evening Susan528, You did it! The alualert did not reappear. Webroot Spyware loaded fine but after updateing Spysweep from the Webroot Site and restarted, I had a message saying Spyware Damaged reinstall Spyware. I did not reinstall. Also I have very slow broswer openning (cannot find page) and I refresh to open. I am amazed at your approch; so easy compared to other sites that I have read. Thank you so much. I await your instructions. bobro
