My computer is running slower than normal and I don't know why. I have run Norton Internet Security/Antivirus, PestPatrol and SpySweeper. I am posting my hijackthis log. I'd appreciate it if someone could look at it and tell me if there is something wrong that I can't find. Thanks!!

Welcome to the forum, sorry for the delay in responding but we are at most times just overwhelmed with logs. Your log is over a week old and your system may have changed , so lets move HJT to its own folder for backup purposes and post a new log please.

Your HIJACKTHIS program is current, but it is very important that it resides in its own folder.
We will use Hijackthis (HJT) to make changes to your system and HJT will make backups of those changes,
If HJT is not in its own folder, those backups could be lost.

Easy to fix.
  • just go to My Computer > YOUR C:\ DRIVE > Program Files and create a new folder and name it Hijackthis .
  • Now scroll to where you have HJT currently, right click on the HJT icon and select CUT .
  • Now open the new folder you just created and right click within that folder and select PASTE .
  • Now HJT should reside in C:\Program Files\Hijackthis\Hijackthis.exe
Ken545, I understand about the delay. I just appreciate any help I can get. I did what you said to do. I'll await further instructions. Thanks, Kellie
Hello Kellie,

I need to see a new HJT log please. Your system may have changed since you originally posted your log.

Open HJT Scan and Save a Log File, it will open in Notepad, go to Format and make sure WordWrap is checked, then to Edit> Select All…..Edit > Copy and Paste the new log into
this thread.
Hi Ken545,

Here is the new log. One of the things that my computer has been doing that it hasn't done in the past is every couple of minutes the little hourglass pops up as if it's saving something, kind of like when you save a word document. I don't know if that means anything, but something about it doesn't seem right. Who knows?? Thanks for any help you can give me.

Kellie

Hi Kellie, :D

I am not looking at anything real bad on your log. Just a few minor things to fix. Before we proceed, its so important to move HJT to its own permanent folder, the changes we are going to make will not be backed up in the location that you have HJT in now..and thats not a good thing in case we need to restore something. So follow my instructions at the beginning of this thread about moving HJT.

You may want to print this out and keep it handy so it will be easier to follow the instructions.

After its moved …and not before…Open HJT > Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows, check these items and click on Fix Checked.

You have Spysweeper installed, allthought its one of the best programs around, it does use a lot of system resources and tends to slow you down, so unless you purchased this program I would suggest uninstalling it from the Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel.
Go to Start> Control Panel> Add-Remove Programs and make sure your on the first tab up at the top left that says Change or Remove Programs.

I would like you to run the trial of Ewido, it will clean up any nasty files and also may show if something is hidden and not showing up on your HJT log.

Download and install the 30 day trial of Ewido Anti-Spyware from HERE and save that file to your desktop.

* Once you have downloaded Ewido Anti-Spyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
* Once the setup is complete you will need run Ewido and update the definition files.
* On the main screen select the icon Update then select the Update now link.
* Next select the Start Update button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
* Once the update has completed select the Scanner icon at the top of the screen, then select the Settings tab.
* Once in the Settings screen click on Recommended actions and then select Quarantine <– Dont forget this
* Under Reports
* Select Automatically generate report after every scan
* Un-Select Only if threats were found
* Close Ewido Anti-Spyware <– Do not run the scan yet.

Boot your computer into Safemode

* Go to Start> Shut Off your Computer> Restart
* As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly,
this will bring up a menu.
* Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to SAFEMODE
* Then press the Enter on your Keyboard

IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while ewido is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:

* Lauch Ewido-Anti-Spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
* Select the Scanner icon at the top and then the Scan tab then click on Complete System Scan.
* Ewido will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
* Once the scan is complete do the following:
* If you have any infections you will prompted, then select Apply all actions
* Next select the Reports icon at the top.
* Select the Save report as button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system
*** make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important
* Close Ewido

Boot back into windows normally and lets run a system cleaner .

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.

I need to see the Ewido Report and a new HJT log please.
Hi Ken545,

Sorry for the delay in responding to you. I've been out of town. I have attached the Ewido report and the new hijackthis log. Thanks for all of your help.

Hi Kelli,

Your log still looks ok and Ewido looks fine also  Lets update your Java first as it is leaving your system vunerable to attack.

Want to mention that Spysweeper is an excellent product but does use some system resources, so if its just a trial, you should remove it via the Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel. You have a few spyware programs running that can tend to slow you down.

  • Your Java is out of date and leaving your system vulnerable.
  • Go to your Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel and uninstall any previous Java Updates
  • Reboot your system.
  • Then go to the Sun Micro website and download and install the update.
  • Java Runtime Environment Version 5.0 Update 6 <–This is what you need to download and install.
  • Use the Online Installation
  • Then after install you can verify your installation here Sun Java Verify

I would like you to run Blacklight, it will check your system for programs that can be running that are undected by HJT, it checks for programs called Rootkits.

Download and Save Blacklight to your desktop:
  • Double-click blbeta.exe
  • Then accept the agreement
  • leave [X]scan through Windows Explorer checked.
  • Click > scan then > next
  • You'll see a list of all items found. There will also be a log on your desktop with the name fsbl.xxxxxxx.log (the xxxxxxx stand for numbers).
  • Copy and paste this log in your next reply.
  • Don't choose the rename option yet! I want to see the log first, because legitimate items can also be present there, such as "wbemtest.exe"

If Blacklight comes up clean, then I can direct you to some windows support sites that deal with your sort of issue.

Ken :D
Hi Ken545, I updated Java and I ran Blacklight. I didn't disable SpySweeper because I really like it, but I did disable PestPatrol and that seemed to help. All of your suggestions have helped the performance of my PC. I don't know if I did something wrong, but when I ran Blacklight there wasn't any log. It just said that no items were found. I tried to save that, but it wouldn't let me. Please let me know if I did anything wrong with blacklight. Thanks for your help, Kellie :D
Kellie,

The log for Blacklight will be right next to the icon for the Blacklight setup, but thats ok, if you said it showed nothing than thats fine. Ewido showed nothing also.

Have you ever run the windows disk defragger, you should run this every week or so to keep your system running nice.
Go to Start> All Programs> assessories> system tools> disk defragmenter , run the tool, it may take awhile the first time and then only 20 min or so after that.

Here is some reading and windows support sites that may help.
