Consider downloading and running Everest 2.20 (free)

Read through the resulting "inventory" of your machine.

You'll find information about your Sound Card and Device controller under:
Multi Media - PCI - PNP Audio
Devices - PCI Devices

That should get you started with identifying your Card.
Then go to the Manufacturer's Website to download and install the appropriate Driver.

Before you head out to get the Audio Driver, take a look at MotherBoard - Chipset
Scroll down to the bottom of that screen to the "link" to your Chipset website to make sure you have the most up-to-date Chipset Drivers for your Motherboard.

Hi fuentejps,

We're going to need more information from you, in order to be of any help.
Here's what you've told us so far:

What Operating System are you running? (For example, WinXP, Win2000, Win98)

Specifically which HP Computer do you have?
For example:
HP Presario DeskTop SR1930Z
HP Pavillion DeskTop s7500
HP Laptop Pavillion, or Presario series
Be "specific", including Model Number.

What does (so i did a new hard drive) mean?
for example:
- Original Hard Drive is still in place as primary and I added an additional hard drive.
- I removed the original Hard Drive and replaced it with a new one.
- What prompted you to get a new hard drive in the first place? Needed more room, infected with malware, etc.

How did you get your machine to run at all, if you (can't find my system disk)
for example:
- I used Norton Ghost (or some other iso image utility) to create an iso image and loaded that on the new Hard Drive
- I used the utility from the new hard drive manufacture to "migrate" all my stuff onto the new Hard Drive.

Are you getting any sounds at all?
for example:
I hear the Windows sounds at startup and shut down, but I can't hear sound when I play MP3, WAV, MIDI

Do you have a "Volume" icon in your toolbar tray at the bottom right hand corner of your Desktop?
If you do, click on it to make sure it is not set to "Mute", and/or adjust the volume to 50% or higher.
Are your Speakers Plugged in? Check to make sure you plugged them into the correct hole.
Are your Speakers plugged into the A/C power.
Are your Speakers turned on (little volume on/off knob on one speaker) so that the little green light is on?

Is your Sound "onboard" or do you have a Sound Card?
Do you know what Sound Card you have?

I LOOKED IN DEVICE MANAGER, NO X'S OR EXCLAMATION POINTS UNDER SOUND DEVICES

Please tell us what "is" listed there.

Please keep us posted with your progress.

Best Regards
our office comp guy replaced my hard drive. i run xp. hp pavillian 522n. no sounds at all. the volume icon isnt there at all. in device manager. my card is soundmax digital audio. i updated that driver by right clicking the icon. whats missing is the volume stuff, the c0ontrols thank you john
Hi feuntejps, In your Control Panel - Click on - Sounds and Audio Devices On the Panel that appears next, be sure that there is a checkmark in the box - "Place volume icon in the taskbar" Best Regards
Here's what the back of an HP 522n looks like.
If your speakers are connected to the socket as labeled, then that would run from an "onboard" audio driver.

You can get the drivers, here:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/product…p;product=83455

If the speaker is not connected as pictured, and there seems to be an added PCI card located between the Monitor card and the Modem card, then you have a PCI Sound Card.

Either way, check in your BIOS to see what the BIOS has enabled.

Hi feuntejps,

You stated in an earlier post that the Device Manager listed: soundmax digital audio; as the Audio Device.
That's a awfully fancy Audio card to be used in a Business environment.
http://www.soundmax.com/products/documenta…AX4PH_Final.pdf
http://www.soundmax.com/products/informati…oundmax4xl.html

Perhaps your entire computer was previously used in another location and then reconfigured for your use?
If so, the IT guy may have "harvested" the sound card prior to releasing the machine to your desk, but failed to "disable PCI audio" and failed to enable "onboard audio".

Of course I'm just speculating in the above, but if that is what has happened, then please use the link to the HP site in my last post for instructions to "enable onboard audio".

Let us know what eventually works for you, since other Members can learn from your experience.

Best Regards
